catradho Posted February 22, 2020 #1 Share Posted February 22, 2020 We're sailing out of New York in October, probably flying into LaGuardia the morning of the cruise. We're planning to take a taxi to the cruise terminal. Is there anywhere recommended to stop on the way to the port to pick up some wine and soda? Or is there a store near the port that we could walk to (with all our luggage)? Thank you.
Nitemare Posted February 22, 2020 #2 Share Posted February 22, 2020 I wouldn't walk that distance with your bags. You could drop your bags and then walk to many stores, depending on your definition of "close". 20 minutes will get you nearly unlimited options. Shorter walks will get you options

The other thing to keep in mind is that the cruise line markup on the wine isn't going to be much more (or might even be less) than a wine store in Manhattan-- especially if you are comparing by the glass. For the most part you're going to pay a premium buying in NYC.
Rare mking8288 Posted February 22, 2020 #4 Share Posted February 22, 2020 (edited) The closest liquor stores are along 10th Avenue, it's somewhat of a long walk back to the cruise terminal (see 2 of the closest ones) - on Sundays, they aren't open until 12 noon due to NY laws ... otherwise, generally open at 9 or 10 am. They offer free local delivery, although I"m not sure if they can do a curbside drop by meeting you at the pier - might be worth calling them to ask & speak about the option ... it might just be worth that extra tip/fee. But, then, you wanted to bring soda onboard - how do you plan to carry them back to the terminal, as the "load" can be heavy. Possible to ask the driver to make a stop (extra fee applied with car service) and drop off someone at the store, then continue to the pier with you & luggage, and, check the bags & wait for the person with the wine/soda haul. Prices are shown, delivery hours are shorter & vary ... https://10thavewines.com/info/#&StoreInfoLocationHash=%23%2Fwidget%2F58893d8339e21c15b3b1ea2d https://cellar53wine.com/ Edited February 22, 2020 by mking8288
mets123 Posted February 23, 2020 #5 Share Posted February 23, 2020 What cruise line are you taking? If Carnival, they do not allow soda or water. They will remove it. Not sure about other lines.
Rare Noxequifans Posted February 23, 2020 #6 Share Posted February 23, 2020 Not sure stopping on the way to the port is worth it Perhaps consider charges on board just part of the vacation cost.

catradho Posted February 23, 2020 Author #8 Share Posted February 23, 2020 Thank you everyone. It seems that it's going to be more trouble that it's worth. FYI, our previous experience and Carnival's current website state that a passenger can carry on a reasonable amount of soda (usually 12) as long as they are in cans or cartons. You can also carry on one 750ml bottle of wine.
Rare mking8288 Posted February 23, 2020 #9 Share Posted February 23, 2020 Post security @ MCT, if your ship is sailing out of Pier 88, in the waiting area next to the restrooms is "Pier Cafe" - soda, juice, Gatorade & bottled water are available for sale. There are also vending machines nearby ... for your convenience, but they aren't badly over-priced, unlike NY area airports. Since there are no secondary security screening/inspection ... I see no reasons that you cannot get a half dozen & walk them onboard in your carry-on, discretely. Depending on whether CCL is charging a corkage fee or not, the typical cruiseline markup is rather high, maybe it's a worthwhile detour to pickup 1 or 2 bottles of wine of your choice. FYI, starting March 1 - plastic shopping bags are banned in NY, bring an eco-friendly tote or sturdy tote to carry items around. Paper bags at 5 cents each might not be adequate for the long walk. Water is not allowed, but Carnival sells 12-packs of bottled water for $4.95 and delivers them to the room.

pacruise804 Posted February 25, 2020 #14 Share Posted February 25, 2020 That's why you were denied. Carnival allows up to 12 cans or cartons of 12 ounces each per passenger of non-alcoholic beverages. They do not allow any bottles except one (up to 750ml) bottle of wine per passenger 21+ .
