Cancellation question

We have a January 2021 cruise booked. Been debating back and forth between going and cancelling. Personally i feel with the country opening up this will just continue the cases of the dreaded virus. Here in Louisiana we had close to 600 new cases in one day (Sunday to Monday) we just feel if things get better i can just rebook. My question is ( i have never cancelled a carnival cruise) i remember there being a 50.00 per person when i changed booking date. So if i simply cancel this cruise is it a 50.00 per person or do i lose the whole deposit.  I booked early saver and later switched to casino rate. I would rather lose the 250.00 deposit than pay it off in November and decide we just best not go and lose the whole thing.

thanks in advance

Everyone must make the decision that they feel comfortable with. January is still a long ways away. I would sit on it and see what happens. You probably will kick yourself in the rear end if things are safe and you cancelled. My wife and I have been cruising for 16 years, our next cruise has been booked since last year and is scheduled for September 2020. If the cruise goes off as planned we will be on it.

Why cancel?  If I'm reading your post correctly, you may even consider rebooking the cruise if you cancel and the situation improves.  I would just wait to see if the cruise line cancels, or the situation improves.

Thanks for the replies even if none of them addressed my question.

my question was if you cancel do you lose your total deposit or is it 50.00 per person. I have never cancelled a carnival cruise.  Have switched dates before and charged 50.00 per person.

I think it depends on the specific rules when you booked.  I know I have an early saver rate and the entire deposit is non-refundable, but, if I understand it correctly, it would cost me $100 penalty and the other would be placed in FCC.  However, with all the delays with refunds and FCC currently, I wouldn't be surprised by a problem with getting it back.

My friends cancelled their Alaska trip coming up in September.  Two of the six that were traveling are elderly and disabled.  The whole party bought the travel insurance since this trip was really for grandma and not sure she will make it to September (but two in the party could not go till September is why is was planned at the end of the season for Alaska).  Carnival is not giving them a refund....only a credit for a future cruise.   In order to use the credit, they have to book their next cruise by December 2020 and travel by December 2022.  While that is fine for most travelers, this was a special event for a grandma's last wish.  The family is not interested in going on another cruise as this was a one time deal that grandma had on her bucket list.  They are out the $2400.  But.......their friends booked their Alaskan cruise on Princess, and they cancelled and are getting their deposit refunded.  This is frustrating since Princess is owned by Carnival.  Anyone else experiencing this?

Two things.  First Princess is not owned by Carnival.  Carnival Corporation owns Carnival, Princess and a slew of other lines.  Each line is independently operated with its own policies.   If your friends cancelled for September, they would be subject to any cancellation fees per their contract.  I am assuming the travel insurance is through Carnival vs an outside insurance provider which is why they have a credit for their deposit.  They are not out the $2400, they just need to plan a cruise. If any of the cruisers is unable to cruise "forever", give Carnival a call (or have your TA handle, they have different phone numbers and speak to different reps, plus they have a designated business manager at Carnival).  If you provide them with documentation from the passengers doctor certifying they are unfit to sail,  Carnival may issue refund or transfer the credit to another person.  At this time, any person over 70 will most likely need a Dr's certification of fitness to sail anyway.

I am not going to expect or count on any refund.  It is only 250.00 they have always been hard core and stuck to the rules in the few times i have changed dates on cruises charging me the 50.00 per person. Regardless of any situation carnival has always been less likely to work with you on a problem. I will never forget the time we had a flooded cabin and they acted like we broke the wall pipe.At this point i just have no desire to cruise.
