CruizinKittie40 Posted May 16, 2020 #1 Share Posted May 16, 2020 I'm torn between a 4-day cruise to Cozumel and a 5-day cruise to Cozumel and Progreso. I can't find any shore excursions for Progreso, but I may have to book the cruise first to see them. Thanks in advance!
o-state girl Posted May 27, 2020 #2 Share Posted May 27, 2020 If you are interested in seeing Mayan ruins, a colonial city (Merida), or doing flea market shopping, then the answer is yes. If you are wanting the clear blue/green water of the Caribbean the answer is no. The beach is nice and sandy, but the water is nothing like you will see in Cozumel.
WomanWillSail Posted June 14, 2020 #3 Share Posted June 14, 2020 Carnival stops at Progreso so you can have a look at the Mayan culture and/or Merida city. Progreso itself is not worth much of a stop. But the chance to go inland makes it interesting, if that is your thing.
mocruiser77 Posted July 14, 2020 #4 Share Posted July 14, 2020 We love stopping at Progreso. Usually take a bus ride into the city of Merida and it has always been a great time.
MississippiMom Posted June 12, 2021 #5 Share Posted June 12, 2021 We were in Progreso over Spring Break 2019. Our private group excursion to the ruins of Uxmal is my favorite cruise excursion EVER. (It even beats our memorable dolphin swim in Grand Cayman years ago.). My parents had gifted their children & grandchildren the family cruise, and my mother was insistent that she wanted to see ruins. We customized our Progreso excursion to fit our needs, and Raul (our guide) and Martin (our driver) did not disappoint. Do I need to return to Progreso? Not really. Although I do understand that Merida is a lovely town to visit, I never shop while in ports. https://lawsonsyucatanexcursions.com
ClevelandCruisin Posted July 15, 2021 #6 Share Posted July 15, 2021 Yes and no. We did not go into town on the longest cruise pier made. Plus nothing in town to offer me. The city I would avoid going into, unless you're going on a tour. We just stayed, ate on the pier and shopped.
blue_water Posted July 28, 2021 #7 Share Posted July 28, 2021 Merida is definitely worth a visit if you are interested at all in seeing the historic area, the cathedral and other churches, and grand parks...We were lucky enough to attend a mass in the Cathedral while visiting from Playa and it was amazing...

ABQrobin Posted August 26, 2022 #9 Share Posted August 26, 2022 We did the excursion to Uxmal but you can also do the excursion to Chichen Itza. BOTH are the most incredible examples of the Ancient Mayan culture in our hemisphere. Either one is a fantastic choice. We have done both and they are the main reason we chose this port. here's my video from a few years ago:
