Oxo Posted August 8, 2020 #1 Share Posted August 8, 2020 12,000 crew members still on cruise ships in US waters months after COVID-19 pandemic shut cruising down https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/cruises/2020/08/08/cruise-ships-us-have-12000-crew-members-amid-covid-19/5574288002/
Rare mduffy1834 Posted August 8, 2020 #2 Share Posted August 8, 2020 All ships have to have a minimum number of crew on board at all times. Basic maintenance and upkeep, even it is completely shut down. To have a ship without anyone on board would be crazy.
CSHS1979 Posted August 8, 2020 #3 Share Posted August 8, 2020 (edited) Underway, and potential to arrive really aren't in US waters as of now. 22 ships in US waters vs 53 potential, eventually, possibly. Plus the CDC and CG don't even agree on the numper of Americans. Not even close to each others numbers. 209 vs 53.🤔 But thanks for the article Edited August 8, 2020 by CSHS1979 1
twins_to_alaska Posted August 9, 2020 #4 Share Posted August 9, 2020 Our best estimate of the number of seafarers on cruise ships still awaiting repatriation is approximately 5,000, based on a survey of our major cruise line members," Bari Golin-Blaugrund, senior director of strategic communications for CLIA, told USA TODAY Thursday. It's sad so many crew are still stuck due to all the various country regulations, closings, etc. Thanks for sharing the link.
Sunshine3601 Posted August 9, 2020 #5 Share Posted August 9, 2020 In addition to crew needed to maintain a ship while still at sea let's not forget Rcl has 2 ships. I think they are Magesty and Symphony that are being used as floating hotels for crew that opted to stay instead of going home.

jg51 Posted August 9, 2020 #7 Share Posted August 9, 2020 On Saturday, August 8, we received an e-mail message from Celebrity's Captain's Club, quoting "X's" CEO as follows: "I am proud to share that this month sees 100% of non-essential Celebrity crew members being repatriated and we are the first major cruise line to have all ships designated green by the CDC. The only crew remaining on board will be working to take care of our beautiful ships. In addition, we have designated Celebrity Edge as our 'Mother Ship.' ... Edge comes into Miami every two weeks to pick up fresh foods, relief crew members, and other essentials and delivers them to the four Celebrity ships in the Bahamas area." We do not know if the same status (as the above) is true of Royal Caribbean International ships -- or if, instead, her crews are not quite yet 100% repatriated. They were at 98% about two weeks ago.

They mention 57 ships, with a minimum manning of about 150 per ship, means that 8500 crew are required, and therefore not "stranded".

2flacruisers Posted August 10, 2020 #12 Share Posted August 10, 2020 The only thing I would be concerned about is if the staff still on board had the virus...if they are healthy and choose to stay about and help, I commend them for their dedication to RCCL.
