The problem with the lockdown is the country did a disjointed half ass version that accomplished nothing (it may have given a breather to hospitals) but had all the social and economic pain.  IMHO if we did a genuine 3-4 week lockdown where if you are caught outside you are vaporized (kidding 😳) when we emerged the virus would have died.

LOL - the entire world would have to lock down for the virus to die and that will never happen, so the virus will always be with us until we reach herd immunity, which may take years.

And it's wishful thinking to imagine people could be totally locked down for 3-4 weeks - that's not possible.

FWIW I just rolled all this and my thoughts/hopes for the upcoming months in a blog post: https://2of8000.website/so-yeah-about-that-floating-petri-dish-thing/

Flew recently from Texas to Florida.

Masks at check in were being worn by everyone. It was the only place some type of enforcement was going on.

In the airport masks were not worn at restaurants and food courts of course.

At the gate most people were not wearing a mask. You are not required if you have a drink with you but even without there was no enforcement if it was even a requirement.

On the plane masks were worn boarding. You could remove it once drinks were served. Flight attendants removed their masks during breaks and only put them on if someone was walking back to the restroom.

At luggage pickup masks were worn but several below the nose. Once outside several people removed them.

On the Seadream i masks would not have made a difference with the first 5 and unlikely with the rest. The point of spread is going to be dining areas and bars and masks are not worn their.

You remember correctly, and our shutdown was quite a joke. There were so many exceptions, it didn't really matter that much. And we are the first to pretty much go "back to normal". And no, things are not okay in Florida.

Totally disagree with this statement. Florida has done very well in relation to the rest of the nation. Deaths have remained stable and well below the deaths from weeks earlier. And this is despite cases rising to over 5k daily and the state being wide open.

Do more research. DeSantis is having numbers fudged. Positivity rate is going up, and we had close to 10,000 new cases on Saturday.

No worries though, DeSantis wants cruising to start again. Not because he thinks it's safe, but because he wants the dollars in the state. He wants the tourist dollars, and he wants port workers back to work.

As he should!

And what about all those among the 5k a day who do not die but have lasting health problems as a result of Covid?

Death is not the only measure of how well or not well an area is doing.

Europe did a massive weeks and weeks long lock down and they are in the same boat we are currently. The virus will only die when there is a vaccine and a good proportion of the population take it
