Red Haired Lady Posted April 20, 2021 #51 Share Posted April 20, 2021 (edited) I was at the Bay of Plenty on my last cruise. The Maasdam visited the Port of Tauranga on Jan 18, 2020. Before I posted this I wanted to be sure exactly what was included as "The Bay of Plenty." According to Wikipedia it is not only the bay itself but the entire area. Wikipedia quote: "The present Bay of Plenty region was formed in 1989 after a nationwide review and shakeup of top-level local government in New Zealand. The new region incorporated the former counties of Tauranga, Rotorua, Whakatāne and Ōpōtiki." My tour that day was with an independent tour company out of Tauranga. It included the lush farming area where we saw a kiwi plantation, the geothermal areas of Rotorua, and a Mauri cultural village called Whakarewarewa Village. I know I posted pictures last January so hope these aren't duplicates. Kiwi fruit growning. The kiwi relish was yummy! Okere Falls Thermal areas of Rotorua. Mauri dancers Back to the Maasdam Leaving Tauranga harbour. I have another 6 week Australia/New Zealand trip booked on the Oosterdam starting Nov 2021. When I booked the trip last November I felt sure it would sail. Now, not so much but I can still hope! sailingdutchy Posted April 20, 2021 #53 Share Posted April 20, 2021 On March 31, 2013 on our way from Auckland to Tauranga we went through the Bay of Plenty on the Oosterdam . Our Captain , Henk Draper took the Oosterdam very slowly all around White Island / Whakaari so everybody had a chance to take lots of pictures . A beautiful sight and you can clearly see all of the smoke from a quite active volcano and also the the sulphur that until the 1930’s had been mined on this Island . It erupted continuous from 1975 until Sep 2000 and than also in 2012, 2016 and 2019 . From the scene that we saw that day we did not think anybody would go onto White Island for a visit so sad that in Dec 2019 there was a sudden larger eruption that caused so many casualties Tony

kplady Posted April 20, 2021 #55 Share Posted April 20, 2021 @superomaGlad you're through your first treatment, hoping the rest go well. The coverup is so nice, and knowing that someone made it gives it an extra dose of love. When I started my chemo (now immunotherapy) last summer she sent me a prayer shawl from her church, and every time I use it I can feel the love knitted into it. Never been to New Zealand. I know my DH would love to go to both Australia and NZ, but since I'm still working it would be too many days off in a block. Oh well, it will have to wait until I retire! Enjoy the day - it's in the low 70s here in NY, and is absolutely beautiful out! Laura
Rare Copper10-8 Posted April 20, 2021 #56 Share Posted April 20, 2021 (edited) Amsterdam's sea day between Phu My, Vietnam and the sprawling island city-state of Singapore in South-East Asia under very nice conditions. My guys (security) did some more training with our LRADs because practice makes perfect. After our upcoming two day-one night/overnight in Singapore, our next three calls would be in Indonesia, a fact that made the vast majority of our hard-working Indonesian crew very exited since many of them hailing from the islands of Java and Bali would have family and friends come onboard as visitors. (the third Indonesian stop, Komodo, is populated by big ugly dragons and we would not be allowing them to come onboard to visit!) Amsterdam's extremely competent HRM (Human Resources Manager) Julie and much less competent SECO (moi) had already scheduled briefings in the A-Deck crew mess outlaying the process of having family and friends join their loved ones onboard for a lunch and many, many photo-ops. As a nice touch from a lot of our passengers, notes like the one posted below, started appearing on the exterior of cabin doors foregoing individual cabin services by the room stewards in order to allow them more time with their families! Since Singapore would be first on the schedule however, the dining room staff on the formal (dress) sea day prior was dressed up like the doorman as the famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore as well as British explorers Edited April 20, 2021 by Copper10-8 22
sailingdutchy Posted April 20, 2021 #57 Share Posted April 20, 2021 When we arrived in Tauranga we went with our private guide Jim Archer a native of New Zealand on a great tour of the area . On our way to the native village we stopped to see how the kiwi’s grow , had some tastes of the fruit the jams and the different delicious honey’s . Than we went to the native Maori village , sorry @Red Haired Lady but this is the real name ………...you had shortened it to Whakarewarewa but this is how you spell it .......... I had the extreme honour to be chosen as the Chief of the visitors , went through a whole procedure before we were allowed to get into the village , in the community hall I had to greet all of the warriors with the Hongi and watched the Haka being performed After all of that the climate became much friendlier and the Maori’s performed a number of wonderful dances . We than went to Rotorua and watched nature perform Another fantastic day was had by all . When we entered the Maori village DW had to walk 2 steps behind me because she was told that that is the protocol and than behind her a good number of tour groups members .............. She does not want to do that anymore …….. Tony 😄😄 20 1

bobpatj Posted April 20, 2021 #60 Share Posted April 20, 2021 We visited this area, Tauranga to Aukland twice, first on Amsterdam, in November, 2009, and on Maasdam, in January, 2017. The pictures posted, so far, are much like I found in my albums. Our CC group planted a tree in a forested area in Tauranga, on our Amsterdam cruise, and we saw a lot of smoke on White Mtn, on the Maasdam cruise. I celebrated my birthday in Aukland in 2017!
mamaofami Posted April 20, 2021 #61 Share Posted April 20, 2021 Thank you everyone for your good wishes. Today was not a walk in the park. It took two go around sand my face is all bandaged up till tomorrow. I will have to sleep in my lazy boy chair because my nose is numb and I can’t breathe. I’m not a happy camper because she said it will take 6 weeks to heal. On the other hand, it was just a basal cell and it could have been much worse. So, I’m grateful. 18

Quartzsite Cruiser Posted April 20, 2021 #63 Share Posted April 20, 2021 (edited) It's been a busy day. We had to go into the T-Mobile store and exchange my 2 month old phone for a new one (probably refurbished). The old one would not acquire cell towers as we drove anywhere. The good news is on the way home the new phone found the towers. Now, I just have to get everything set up the way I want it. That's a small price to pay for a working phone. Before we left this morning, we took the plunge and booked a cruise for next spring. We booked the Princess world cruise that sails from Australia in May 2022. That is a good time for us so we can have our winter in Quartzsite and our summer away from the Texas heat. Now, we will be keeping our fingers crossed that the cruise will not be cancelled and that vaccinations will be required for passengers and crew. The last is a deal breaker for us. While we are vaccinated, if others were not, the virus could still be brought on the ship and the ship would not be allowed to enter any ports. @superoma Sorry for the loss of the neighbor of so many years. Your and your neighbor's family are in our thoughts. @mamaofami What a relief for you that it was a basal cell. The healing, while longer than expected, will give you a chance to line up the J&J shot and for the vaccine to be reviewed and back on the approved list. ClippyJoe Posted April 20, 2021 #67 Share Posted April 20, 2021 I love all the pictures from New Zealand etc. We were scheduled for a cruise there but like so many others, it was cancelled. It snowed flurries here today, mixed with some rain, then flurries again. What an odd year this has been. I need a cruise before I become a real grumpy person !
St. Louis Sal Posted April 20, 2021 #68 Share Posted April 20, 2021 Good evening all! Typical Missouri weather here today. After 71 degrees yesterday, today we had an inch and a half of snow. It was big, ploppy snowflakes and the trees were completely covered. Now it’s stopped, the sun has come out and the snow has melted. Of course we have a freeze warning for tomorrow morning. Gotta love it. For many years people told me I looked like Toni Tenille (what a compliment!) I have been a volunteer for so many years. From Girl Scouts, to school librarian to most recently serving on the board of one of our biggest community food pantries (10 years). I love volunteering. My youngest daughter now has had her second Covid jab. My oldest had the J&J and she has been fine. We are glad to be a vaccinated family. Prayers for all on the care list, for treatments and the knowledge of our medical profession, for those in grief or loneliness. And I will raise a glass of wine in celebration for that list. Thanks for the Daily! St Louis Sal
