Happy to see 2 Panama Canal transits.  Could Vista/O ships take over ATW cruises in the future?  DH will not consider ATW on an R ship.

As long as Insignia remains in service, it will remain the ATW ship.

Among other reasons, it is a practical matter: O needs to fill both ATW and ATW segment cabins in an ongoing delicate booking balance. Ergo, the smaller R ship is the most efficacious choice.

 

BTW: our favorite O Panama Canal itinerary is SF (Golden Gate at sunset) to NY (Statue of Liberty/lower Manhattan at sunrise).

Meanwhile Viking has found that one 930 passenger ship isn't nearly enough, so they have decided to have the identical World Cruise itinerary start 3 days later on a second ship to get capacity up to 1,860.  Granted nobody uses their flagship for world cruises, but O could easily fill Marina or Riviera at only 1,250.

The advantage to using the smaller ships is that they are able to get into some places that the larger ones can't ... further up inlets/rivers/etc. For example, while not usually on an ATW itineraries, in St. Petersburg the smaller ships will usually dock right near the Hermitage, Nicolas Palace, etc. while the larger ships are relegated to docking at the big cruise ship terminal - which can be a 20 to 30 minute ride to this area.

I was also thinking whilst looking at the itineraries that this ship seems to be mimicking the Marina/Riviera itineraries. I think Marina would make a lovely ATW ship, and O have to be wondering if they can fill a world cruise in a day of it opening for booking, can they fill an O class ship…I think they can.

Looking at history, fwiw, there are some misconceptions. Oceania was not filling its R ship ( Insignia) on the ATW cruises. It had to sell segments on all those cruises. After a long lull, ATW 2023 did sell out quickly, but one cruise , under unusual conditions, doesn’t make a pattern . After all the excitement of a return to cruising and travel subsides, we’ll see how many make final payment in a year.

Only a set number of cabins are intended for ATW cruisers on Insignia. I expect that is because segment sales (though announced at a later date) produce more gross revenue per capita.

Having done one ATW segment in 2018, We would love the opportunity to join guests on Marina or Riviera for a segment or two. And you are quite correct, they do not need to sell it out to be successful, the segments will make the  ATW highly profitable. JMO this is the future after the second Allura class ship joins the fleet.
