According to the review on cruise critic that Quantum is set up for the Asian market. Question now that it's being used here in the U.S. to go to Alaska have they made changes needed for us American, Canadians, and other English speaking people.

 

Also are there charges for the flowrider, ifly, rock climbing, northstar, and bumper cars. I just read that there was a charge for the Ifly. True? or was this only when it was sailing in Asia and is no longer charged. I know there was no charge in March 2019 on board Anthem for any of the above things.

None of that will be confirmed until she actually sails in Alaska but assume all will be the same as Ovation.

I believe the ship has not moved to the United States, so I'm not sure what changes will be made. I really not sure what changes "English speaking people" need to sail on a ship.

 

The flowrider, ifly and the like usually have a trial "ride" for free and a cost for the extended play time.

Other than lessons or booking the whole venue, the Flowrider is free. Ripcord is also free and is not a trial ride. Additional rides (which may or may not cost) are the same as the free ones.

We are scheduled to sail Quantum in Alaska in 2022.  We have been told that the ship will replace the Noodle Shop with Fish and Chips, the high roller gambling areas will revert back to the venues they are in other Quantum class ships sailing in North America and they will have Royal Suite Class.  Time will tell if this happens.  Ovation in Alaska is not charging for the activities you list other than Northstar while at a glacier (they do a longer trip and go out over the side of the ship) and a longer iFly experience, which I am not sure if they are still doing.

i meant by that if they customize the ship for the Asian market that they'd do the same for over here

Once a ship goes to or leaves Asia changes are done before the next sailing...we've seen this done onboard.

 

We've also been onboard and saw Rita's Cantina changed to Rita's Crab Shack.

Ignorance is bliss - what exactly do you believe is different on an Asian ship other than signs in dual languages?  Most Asians under the age of 40 also speak English as a second language.  So, all the menu's in Chinese/English will be English only.  Signs around the ship, will be changed out for English only.  Izumi, will still be Izumi in any language.  The main dining room, windjammer and most places that feed you are exactly the same as the rest of the fleet.  The only actually diffence on the ship, is the replacement of Johnny Rockets and what they sell in the shops on board.  But since the USA have plenty of Chinese eating places like Panda Express, changing the noodle bar might not even be necessary but changing out a space is not exactly a real issue on a ship.  Even Wonderland, is the same but a different menu so all they do is change the menu.  

 

The only other change is put the diamond lounge back instead of a high rollers casino club....(move some game tables out, and put some chairs in).  The other section of the casino, is add more penny slots, and remove a couple of tables. 

 

Oh, and they will add Budweiser and remove Tsingtao Beer from the menu.

Where did you get that idea?  Our experience in Japan, Taiwan, and China (pre-pandemic) was completely different.  A few (very few) spoke understandable English.

Quantam will be based in Australia in the Alaska off season so don’t worry about being Asianised.

I don't know.  Maybe I was in 3 major cities in China plus, 2 cities in Vietnam, 3 cities Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea. Every  person I ever asked directions from, were able to help me using English, and the trick was asking under 40, or young people.  On the ships, that sailed from Shanghai I sat, talked, drank and ate with many Chinese with no issues.  In China, english is taught as a second language, being the international language of commerce.  But with any form of education, the ability to practice and speak fluently is dependent on the individual, but even if it was broken or incorrectly formatted English, they actually liked and appreciated any corrections.  But I never had a problem.  On another note, many people struck up conversations, just to kind of practice, and it was kind of fun for them.

People all i was trying to say for i'm not anti Asian is that different ethnicities have different tastes and customs. There for what we like even a German might not like. Same goes between an America and a person from Bejing.

Odyssey charges for Northstar except for port days and it only goes up and down. Sea days are a $29/pp charge and it goes over both sides of the ship.

I'd also like to respectfully point out that Quantum is currently based in Singapore, where the majority of us speak English as a first language too. I don't think you need to worry about how the ship is set up, as it's not like there are vast differences between a Singapore sailing and those from European or US ports. As mentioned above, some activies are normally chargeable in Asia (like iFly and Northstar, but not Flowrider), but these should change when she moves to the US.

 

As an aside, I always wonder why so many people here throw around "Asianized" like it's something to be worried about. Not like those of us here don't enjoy a good cruise with much the same things as most other people around the world.

It was an innocent question about the changes that were made.  Some features like the Diamond Lounge and the Solarium are used differently on the current sailings.  Diamond lounge is currently a high rollers area and Solarium is only available to suites if I remember correctly.  Johnny Rockets is a Noodle restaurant which I actually think is a better choice but I expect that to be changed to Fish and Ships as they have done on other ships.

Well, the Diamond lounge had an issue in Asia.   No one is Diamond or above, so not really a need for a Diamond lounge. The Solarium thing was based on how "suite guests who paid a lot of money" got a private area.  The couple Diamond or above guest had access to those areas also.  I think on my one trip, there were 2 guests on the ship Diamond or above......that was me and my wife.

A lot of gamblers had a problem with the colour of the gaming tables on Ovation when it first went to Alaska.

Seems trivial to me but I’m not a gambler.
