Rare uktog Posted October 26, 2021 #1 Share Posted October 26, 2021 I hear from onboard Captain Carl answered a mayday overnight. A vessel for six was sinking in the rough seas they were experiencing (they’d already cancelled a Sicily stop). Now they are trying to get to Sicily with 50 rescued migrants including women and children. So sad to think of the risks people take in despair. 5
excitedofharpenden Posted October 26, 2021 #2 Share Posted October 26, 2021 Sadly all too common. I was on Journey a few years ago when Captain Johannes had to go to the rescue of overloaded boats. Sadly 22 died and we took a few survivors onboard. Here's the article. https://www.seatrade-maritime.com/europe/shipping-rescues-migrants-greece-calls-european-strategy Phil 2

Kitekat Posted October 26, 2021 #4 Share Posted October 26, 2021 Anchored off the mainland just before the straits of Messina, the 50 men, women and children were transferred to the Italian coast guard around 11:30 today. Now under way again heading for Sorrento. Seas last night were very rough - a few things crashing and falling over in cabins so conditions on their yacht must have been horrendous. We have missed Taormina as waves were expected to be 2.5m. Agreed that home must have been really bad to risk conditions like that. 5
marinaro44 Posted October 26, 2021 #5 Share Posted October 26, 2021 We were on Quest a few years ago when we picked up a crippled homemade boat with nine or ten Cubans trying to get to the States. Delivered them to the Coast Guard.
TeaBag Posted October 26, 2021 #6 Share Posted October 26, 2021 How lovely that the people were all rescued. Hope they find peace in their new homeland.
Baynanno1 Posted October 26, 2021 #7 Share Posted October 26, 2021 Well done Captain Carl and crew! We have been on board during two similar occasions, the first with crew in a boat on the water, waiting for the coastguard as the refugee craft was o.k. and conditions fairly calm. All were safely transferred to the coastguard vessel before our crew members returned to the ship. The second unfortunately was an unsuccessful search as the refugee craft was not anywhere near the coordinates that had been provided.
ddpe Posted October 26, 2021 #8 Share Posted October 26, 2021 We were on Journey a few years ago when they responded in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, not a happy ending for the migrants - probably leaving from Turkey trying to get to Greece.
