jsscuba2 Posted November 7, 2021 #1 Share Posted November 7, 2021 (edited) I’m interested in renting a car in Skagway, but the only rental company I can find is Avis and the web site said no cars available. Does anyone know of another car rental place? Edited November 7, 2021 by jsscuba2
Northern Aurora Posted November 8, 2021 #2 Share Posted November 8, 2021 It seems to me that folks have posted on this thread about renting jeeps for a DIY tour. I assume you have checked the Skagway visitor's bureau website.
Rare Coral Posted November 8, 2021 #3 Share Posted November 8, 2021 If I remember correctly - you have to use Avis Alaska website (not regular Avis): https://www.avisalaska.com I think this is the Jeep rental: https://www.diyjeeptours.com
Dancing Shoes Posted November 8, 2021 #4 Share Posted November 8, 2021 We used Avis in Skagway back in 2018. I remember calling their local number.
john2003 Posted November 20, 2021 #5 Share Posted November 20, 2021 I wonder if this is because in general rental companies have very few cars. Fleets were cut and now there is the chip shortage so difficult to rebuild.

Even before the car/chip shortage.

don't-use-real-name Posted December 4, 2021 #10 Share Posted December 4, 2021 With multiple ships in port the competition for cars or any vehicles is going to be at a premium. Advanced booking - Way Advanced booking is without a doubt highly recommended !
Wavesprite Posted February 11, 2022 #11 Share Posted February 11, 2022 Just wanted to let folks know that you can make reservations in Skagway at the Avis now. Namvvet68 Posted February 12, 2022 #13 Share Posted February 12, 2022 Thanks, you just saved me $150. I had a green jeep reserved and with the insurance it was $450. By the way the Avis Agency and DIY Jeeps(Green Jeeps) have the same phone no. and address.

I did buy any insurance they offered because then you don’t have to worry. We had a sedan last time but this time reserved a small suv. My husband is a fly fisherman and so he brings some gear and we stopped at the grocery store in town for lunch items and had the absolute best day!!!! As noted above both companies have the same address. It is a very short walk from the cruise ship docks. We've rented from AVIS in Skagway and my recollection is that it was about a 15 minute walk. The last time they had a mileage restriction so you couldn't drive to Whitehorse.

marx Posted February 19, 2022 #21 Share Posted February 19, 2022 I just rented a car from Avis for May 25th. Current restrictions will not allow us to drive into Canada without a COVID test. If these restrictions are still in place two months from now, I will likely order a home proctored test to take a day or two in advance.
Wavesprite Posted February 19, 2022 #22 Share Posted February 19, 2022 Yes, I assumed we’d have to have something. I will be checking, to and bring tests to take.
HalfWhit Posted March 1, 2022 #23 Share Posted March 1, 2022 Good morning, I took your advice and rented a SUV in Skagway from Avis. What are some pretty drives to take? Any great hikes close by? Thanks,
Namvvet68 Posted March 1, 2022 #24 Share Posted March 1, 2022 The only real drive is to Carcross, Canada and Emerald Lake just beyond Carcross. Beautiful country. The railroad goes up one side of the canyon and the highway goes up the other. We did not hike on the way to Carcross but did some around town and to the cemetery. The Avis site says you have unlimited mileage but other posters say you cannot go to Whitehorse, which is another 60 miles beyond Carcross. We have never been there and want to do it this time if it is allowed. Since you will be going into Canada, bring your passports. Right now COVID tests are required for entry to Canada. Hoping that requirement will be eliminated before our trip.

We had a beautiful drive, stopped for picnicking, had ice cream in Carcross, went to a cool museum and held sled dog puppies. Emerald Lake is beautiful. Funny story! My kids were about 10 and 6 and hadn’t signed their passports (obviously). The border agents on the way back in were hilarious! Making them get out of the car and do some funny oath, and exercises…. then had them sign their passports! It was a highlight!
