COVID

We are on Allure right now and my wife has COVID so they moved her to a COVID unit on ship. I have to stay in my cabin for 24 hours. We took the PCR on Saturday but were afraid that our results wouldn’t return on time so we took the RAPID test on Sunday and both of us were negative on the RAPID. We received the test from Saturday this morning with the wife coming back positive an I came back negative again. We did the right thing an informed the medical staff. They tested both of us again with her positive an me negative. We are scheduled for a b2b but we have to leave the ship when we return to port. Hats off to RCCL for making sure all the protocols are met. We will be missing our cruise but I feel good that she won’t be passing it to other guest because of the protocol. It is what it is and we live for another cruise.  I can’t visit my wife but she said they are taking good care of her.

@muscleman I would like to commend you and your wife for stepping up and doing the right thing. It's not easy sometimes and many fail to follow the path of the righteous. It's good to see it happen and there are people on that path.

Safe journey home on the private jet. I hope your wife's fight with COVID is easy and uneventful and things get better quickly so you and her can cruise again.

If they haven't already given your wife Monoclonal antibodies please check into that with your doctor back home. They are highly recommended and very effective if given within 10 days of symptoms.

Sorry to hear about your wife. Hopefully she will have an uneventful recovery.

Having said that, I take it you were on the ship for a day or 2 before you received the positive results. Is Royal contact tracing anybody your wife came in contact with during those couple of days?  I suppose that would be quite difficult but I read of a teen who came down with Covid while on the ship and 2 other teens she befriended has to quarantine.   Also, is she experiencing any symptoms?

Please let us know how your wife is. It sounds serious if she has to be put into a COVID unit and I’m sure I speak for many on this board that we are all worried.

Following this thread closely.

I believe it is standard procedure to put positive testing passengers into their covid ward so they can monitor and be prepared should anyone need immediate medical assistance.

Yes and to keep them quarantined from other passengers and crew.

Just got a call and RCCL an they are flying us to Fort Lauderdale on a private plane on them when we dock tomorrow.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery! And thank you for doing the right thing by immediately reporting the test results and getting re-tested by the ship. And I am so happy to hear that RCCL is doing the right thing too by getting you home from Costa Maya (not the place to spend your quarantine).

They told me they will look at the security camera to see who we came in contact with. We were at a bar talking to a couple for over an hour and at the casino. I just hope they found them people.

That’s the danger of the rapid test; it takes a higher viral load to show positive, so you really need that sensitive PCR test to know if you have Covid in the early days of the virus. I hope your wife recovers well and quickly and that you don’t get it! Thank you for doing the right thing and informing the ship. It’s scary to think how many could have contracted it between boarding and getting the result. Safe travels home!

Did your wife have any symptoms?  I am just wondering since you seemed surprised that she tested positive on the PCR?  Also wondering if she had been vaccinated.  There are so many strange things about Covid and we try to understand as many of them as possible so we can make informed choices about booking a cruise.  Hope she comes through it very quickly with no side effects.

I thought we were getting off the ship yesterday but we are getting off this morning in Roatan. The wife is doing good. Yes both of us has been vaccinated with booster. The doctor said she is a symptomatic that’s why she had no systems. She is doing very well. Thank you guys for all your prayers. RCCL should change the rules to 72 hours before boarding so everyone could get the PCR test instead of RAPID. RCCL done a very good job of taking care of my wife. We have no complaint on the way everything were handled.

The downside to that is that the PCR test does not distinguish between live and dead virus. You can get a nice viral load, kill it off quickly, and still pop positive for weeks. It took my wife (pre-vaccines) over six weeks to stop popping positive on PCR for symptoms that lasted 2-3 days. Granted this is on the longer side, but the only thing the PCR test can tell you about an asymptomatic patient is that they were exposed to the virus, not if they have an active reproducing infection.

I’m guessing you meant your wife is asymptomatic, therefore no symptoms?

Unfortunately the vaccine is very effective when looking at a population level but not as great in specific settings like gatherings.

I knew a party of approximately 20 people recently in an apartment. All fully vaccinated. There was one person who later realized he probably had symptoms but didn’t think anything of it. He was positive at the party. Out of the 20 people there, there ended up being 9 positives. Most of the cases were people who were vaccinated earlier in the year. And some people who had very close contact at the event, didn’t get COVID at all🤷🏻‍♂️Unfortunately when there are cases in vaccinated groups, it can spread fast.

3 of the 9 had bad symptoms but none went to hospital and all recovered without further seqeulae

I'm happy to hear that your wife is doing well.  Sorry you both had to cut the cruise short.  Thank you for your honesty.  Glad that RCCL is flying you both back to Ft. Lauderdale.  Stay well.
