If the numbers are accurate and last week's Meraviglia had 169 crew members and 60 guests test positive, I wonder what the threshold number is for the CDC to turn her red?

I was wondering the same.  Seems like there have been spikes on many ships now mirroring what we are seeing across the country.

May not matter too much soon though since the CDC's Conditional Sail Order will be allowed to expire on the 15th.

That whole thing is a joke.

How is the math done?

I am on Meraviglia right now and are told we have 473 guests.

If 60 tested positive that would be 14%

1200 crew, again 13% if 169 were positive.

According to the guidelines if 5 people test positive we are over the 1%

Are you in the Yacht Club? If so, please say hello to Princess (server in the restaurant) from Kevin and also say hello to 2 guests - Rick and Kris...Rick is a big guy who is often drunk 🙂

Enjoy your time there...MSC is fun when it works!

I also heard both. I also found out.on seashore b2b last month they were using the bracelet.

So I killed them with a magnet I brought.

On Mera tomorrow I will not wear one. If I have too, I will kill it with the magnet.

I will keep my card in my sock. Wife has it wink wink.

I was on the M in November. I could open my room door with the tracker but not the card. Also sometimes in the specialty restaurants they would scan the tracker instead of the card.

No, I didn't like wearing it either.

Ha!  MSC thought of a way to outsmart @mscdivina2016......

Just to be clear it was your cabin door you couldn't open and not YC main door?

Yes, it was my cabin door. I was not in YC.

It was strange because out of habit I would always reach for my card when returning to the room. There were a couple of times I left my card in the room to keep the A/C going when it had direct sun.

🤪 I hope @mscdivina2016 did not get locked out of the room!!

I wonder if you were the exception though.....maybe your card wasn't programmed right.

I wondered that too. However the card worked fine for purchases and was scanned when I left or returned to the ship.

I booked a 15 day cruise with one booking number, but the front desk called me toward the end of week 1 and told me I needed a new card because my existing one was about to expire. The new one didn't work for the room either.

They are protective of their trackers, threatening to bill you $35 should you take it home. I couldn't wait to get rid of mine.

I would imagine the card will still work for purchases and casino even after dipped in vinegar, boiled in water, exposed to 400 degree heat, and inside an RFID blocking wallet....

I wonder if the tech changes

In Feb 2020 our wristbands just got reprogrammed from week to week

And we left with the bands...there was nno expectation to return them.

Who would one return it to and when-- given its needed to get into your room according posts here

On the #s being "reported" for "cases" I doubt it and think its social media trolling...

This is the way I understand it. The red status would occur when the ship is ordered to change its protocol, return to port, or be detained.

The CSO may expire on the 16th. But, the CDC still has the responsibility to monitor public health on the ships. Still has the ability to order a ship detained etc. Similar to a situation with any infectious disease, like norovirus.

IMO, the CDC has been very lenient with the cruise industry. Should the CDC actually issue a health order for a ship, that would be a very bad sign of things to come.

Yea. That’s the problem with current system. Green to orange to yellow are objective percentages of Covid to be X status. However red is very very subjective measure that states per cdc“

  • sustained transmission of COVID-19 or CLI, or
  • potential for COVID-19 cases to overwhelm on board medical center resources.”

I’m not sure if there’s any place in the world now besides China that doesn’t have “sustained” transmission of Covid or the POTENTIAL to overwhelm hospitals.

But where the red status is silent is whether sustained transmission is per sailing basis or sailing to sailing to sailing basis. Huge difference since the ones with passengers did and will have Covid infection sailing after sailing among the crew (and of course pax once they get off but didn’t show symtomns on the ship) by the virtue of the fact that this is Covid. Just like any other community in the world now besides maybe China and Hong Kong.

In conclusion I don’t believe cdc ever wants to use red status and left enough room to justify a yellow or less status despite the fact there is Covid on every single sailing on all passenger carrying ships from USA sailing after sailing.

But, I think with respect to cdc being lenient on cruise industry, I could not disagree on more. Relative to any other industries from the US, cruise industry has had such more protocols. I doubt even ICU staff gets tested as much as crew on cruise ships. And imagine the level of testing and protocol as much as a cruise ship whenever you go to a restaurant, hotel, flying, go to a hotel etc.

Or alternatively, just like cdc did the whole eviction ban for a long time, imagine if cdc had the same protocols at any “live, work play” type of developments or high rises…its almost comical because we all know that’ll never happen. But we also all know they did regulate the housing industry — via eviction ban….

They say 28 in YC next sailing. Keep in mind it's a 4 night then a 3 night sailing next.

It very nice but Seashore last month was overall better.

I hope they dip those bands in acid / sanitizer before giving it to the next pax…sounds like potential Covid path there….after touching god knows how many doors and scanners

Thanks divina but we’re not YC ;(. Any clue on the overall ship?   We’ll be sailing the Aurea peasant class

Nope. They also did not do my room earlier because they thought I was in the room.

They did ask why I was not wearing it.

I told them I have never worn a watch and I don't intend to. I also told them it was nice to be the boss. You wait for me before I retired.😁

Sounds like what we had in YC in Feb 2020... It did have a reader to open the door

However for things like our Diamond specialty meal-- they didn't scan anything--they went from the reservation made by YC concierge

Hope you are having a lovely time. Looking fwd to being back on board.

You put it in a barrel when you disembark. They told me they keep the data for a while, I don't remember exactly how long, but I think it's over 30 days.

I wonder if there are those barrels stacked somewhere on the lower decks----or upon embarkation those barrels are where new passengers collect their big brother tracker for the cruise after MSC pulls the data wirelessly....actually they probably don't even need to pull wireless.  It's probably collecting in real time on the big brother server

We picked them up as soon as we set foot on the ship. I'm sure it was cleaned thoroughly.

I forgot to mention that when I had my card renewed by the front desk they also updated the tracker.

That said, I don't expect a red flag as long as cruise companies operate under the 'guidance' of the CDC.

Back to the topic of the Mera. What will MSC do? Pause the ship or switch the entire fleet to 'test and more tests'?

What do you mean by what will MSC do?  You mean if they get a red flag one day?

I doubt MSC will...they seem to be pretty proactive.  At this point, I think CDC and rest of the world recognizes omicron is out of control and we have absolutely zero hope of containing it.  Hopefully the omicron dies out soon (pun not intended of course) without too much damage on its trail.

Even when CDC sailing order expires, CDC has the power, I believe, to regulate/control the port to not allow ships to get their " free pratique" (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_flag_(contagion)) to be able to dock at a home port....so even though the conditional sailing order is "voluntary" starting 1/16, I can't imagine any lines, including MSC, sailing out of US ports to not abide by the CDC "requests"
