Keep the libraries and lectures going...

There is a new, excellent big-name literature review out on COVID transmission.  Breathing, speaking, coughing or sneezing: What drives transmission of SARS‐CoV‐2? - Stadnytskyi - 2021 - Journal of Internal Medicine - Wiley Online Library  I was reading away, and it said this:  "Indeed, the literature appears devoid of SSEs in settings such as libraries or movie theatres..."  SSE= Super Spreader Events.  The idea is loud voices and singing seem to be risky.  But two of my favorite Cunard things- lectures and the library seem entirely safe.  The article goes on to say droplets and aerosols are a range and not separate things.

The unfairly IMHO maligned buffet is again spared.  Elevator buttons are fine.  But shouting in a noisy venue - not so much.    The big lecture hall on QM2- the speaker is way at the bottom of the room.  Watery particles mostly fall.  If I was in charge, could meals be served under an awning up under the funnel on QM2?    Outdoors, the famed tables for eight could possibly be OK.  It says the risk of spread outdoors is an order of magnitude lower.

Interesting article @ew101. I agree with your point on libraries and movies. No more choir practice and the music volume in all bars should be reduced so people don’t speak loudly. It would be interesting to see studies from a casino floor. Note the chart shows the highest transmission is in an exercise class with the instructor giving loud instructions! I’ll be sure to avoid that situation. 🙂  I assume Cunard has increased air flow in all parts of the ship. Loved the part disclaiming plexiglass screens. Thanks for sharing the link.

On our cruise out of Australia they did an "Aussie BBQ" on the pool deck around the aft pool one night. We were going to go to the MDR but it smelt so good (and there was a deal on G&T ) that we stayed.  I was left with a) the satisfaction  of having dining on Cunard in bare feet and sarong dress code, and wondering whether they needed to realise that in warmer parts of the world its absolutely lovely to eat outside.

how lovely! On another line on a Canaries we have had afternoon tea served on deck, with hot savouries too. It was a real treat.

Oh that would be so cool!  I suspect the Aussie BBQ was something they'd learned to do with having the QE homeported in Australia for the summer for a few years. I had a lovely afternoon tea on an outside veranda in Malaysia a few years ago - so much nicer than inside whether the weather is hot

Whenever the weather is reasonable tea trolleys appear on the Grills terraces, laden with all younwould expect. A long time ago I encountered them in mid Atlantic on the Prom Deck, but they may have stopped this.

we had a trolley serving hot Bovril (beef drink) on a TA a few years ago. A nice touch. Never travelled in Grills so I've definitely missed out!

And, just in case you are feeling weak, because, after all, there are several hours between meals, they bring out fruit sticks mid morning, sandwiches at midday, and, best of all, ice cream at 3pm. Take advantage of all this, and you need barely set foot in the restaurant. 😀 Mind you, this was all pre-Covid.
