Tolls - MCO/Port Canaveral - rental car

Can tolls east of Orlando and in the Port Canaveral area be paid with cash? Coins? Bills? How much do they run? If we rent a car at the MCO airport, drive to our Orlando COVID-19 test, go to Kennedy Space Center, and sightsee in the Cape Canaveral area for two days prior to our cruise - which are toll roads? Can tolls be paid with cash? How do I find out costs?

They can be paid with cash. The total is $2.75, which you can verify on the Central Florida Expressway Authority's Toll Calculator.

The rental car companies (most) will have a device to pay the tolls, but you will pay for the convenience. Be sure to turn off or decline that "service," or you'll pay twice.

I was down there in October and you could use cash then. You use the right lanes to go through a booth. Rental car companies add fees if you choose them to automatically pay tolls.

Are the lanes well marked so we can pay cash on the toll road from MCO to Port Canaveral hotel.

Yes, just pay attention to the signs. Vehicles paying with cash exit to the toll booths while vehicles with transponders stay in the regular travel lanes.

The second picture shows one exact change lane and several change/receipts lanes. One of the latter will be open if you don't have exact change.

typically one cash/change/attended lane is open and it is not unusual for there to be a line of vehicles backed up.

The exact change lane is never backed up IME .... a roll of quarters will cover a one way trip.

Sitting in a queue while the person up front asks if they can write a check or break a $100 or use a credit card and THEN asks for directions while you watch the others zip by using electronic tolls can be frustrating . . .

Highly recommend you check out the Visitor Toll Pass program. There is a manned kiosk in the rental car section of MCO. This program will charge your credit card based on the tolls you use. When you register, you connect your credit card, add the rental car license plate info via the app or website, and hang the tag from the rear view mirror. Just make sure to unlink the rental car when you return it if you’re not returning it back to MCO. When you’re back at MCO, you can just drop the tag in a bin like a mailbox right by the rental car return. We’ve used this service several times on vacations in Central Florida, including to Port Canaveral and back in different rental cars, and really enjoy it. Way better than paying any fees to the rental car companies!
