I asked the convenor of our nature photography group about the yellow and black spotted thing.

 

She said the lava of a fungus eating ladybird (ladybug to some).

After about 2 weeks of continuous rain [culminating in a deluge of 10 inches (245mm) in 24 hrs on Tuesday], the sun finally re-appeared, so I though what better way to enjoy it than a little sea-side walk

A lovely Sunday afternoon in Melbourne town But 9.20pm and has started to rain. Please, not like Sydney.

 

Walked down to the Newport Railyards Open Day. 30 minute walk. Lots of steam trains chuffing around. The ones with the K designation were built there decades ago.

 

 

 

 

Puffing Billy. Brought across Melbourne, about 60-70km.

 

4 locos hooked up together to pull a few wagons.

Back out to the Florida wetlands, back to solo again after entertaining some friends from out of town the weekend before.  Also back was the hot weather and humidity!

A large flock of black-hooded parakeets noisily flying by - this is just one group out of about 20 birds together:

 

A tricolored heron performing their usual frantic, splashing, flying-running attempt to catch a fish - and he got one:

 

A baby alligator, staying just a foot or so away from momma:

 

A lovely female least bittern, getting her breeding colors on:

 

But no bird quite changes so entirely for breeding as the cattle egret.  Normally an all white bird with black legs and a dull, yellowish bill and eyes...during breeding, they get the orange was on the head and neck, the legs turn red, the eyes turn red, and the bill turns into a veritable rainbow:

On Saturday morning, we had a house full of guests. Our granddaughter Savannah and, of course, Lila the dog had arrived Friday afternoon to visit with their sister who is staying with us while attending college (location, location, location). Saturday morning, the girls (minus Lila) left to "get their hair done". Savannah returned with her usual subtle purple highlights, but Hailee has gone from her natural California-girl blonde to anime-pink. Her Grandmother and I have a decidedly greater ability to adapt to changes in cultural norms than the generation that preceded us. I am reasonably sure that our parents would have pooped live kittens if any of their children or grandchildren came home with pink hair. For the record, we rather like it.
