Day 11, Tuesday, May 31, 2022, Disembark and home

I’ll start with a few photos of the ship I haven’t posted yet.  They were taken while I was watching our approach to Halifax.  I started out aft next to the Flowrider.  While I will never get on one it was interesting to see it in use.

I continued up the steps to the sports deck.  There is a large court which can be used, among other things, for basketball and tennis.

There is a deck 15 on the ship but it is tiny.  The entire Deck 15 is the chapel, above the Viking Crown Lounge and there is no elevator.  One of the staircases has a chair lift.

My final morning I was up about 4:30 and was up on deck 13 to look for the sunrise.  The early morning was chilly and windy and I walked 30 minutes on a combination of decks 4 and 13 until the sun came up.

Sunrise was close enough to the 6AM opening that I hung around until they opened.  My final meal before being on my own for food for all of June was a ham omelet.

I did some final packing and internet work shutting down my computers about 7:30.  I was able to squeeze everything into my small rolling bag and headed down to the Imperial Lounge at 7:45.

My Number 12 tag (for Diamond+) was estimated to be called at 8:20.  The actual calloff came at 8AM for all numbers through 44 (times through 8:30).  There was some congestion at the elevators but the line to physically get to the gangway was quite short.

As I got to the departure there were a number of porters standing by and I readily agreed to use one.  She took my 27-pound carryoff bag and we easily located the 52-pound monster and she escorted me through immigration and out to the car.  At that point things became a bit less easy.

My porter cannot enter the garage and she left me at the entrance.  There was only 1 working elevator and a long line in the elevator but I did manage to squeeze through and get to my car.  Since being directed to the wrong lot at the beginning of the first segment I did not have a ticket to get out of the lot.  There was an attendant at the ticket machines but he could not handle my issue and called for his supervisor.  He took my credit card and went back to his office.  When he returned I was ready to depart.  I left the garage about 8:30.

Since 1997 prostate surgery it is difficult for me to go very long without a bathroom stop.  I ended up stopping at every rest stop on the NJ turnpike except one, stopped again in Delaware, and then a lunch stop a while north of Baltimore.  After passing through the Baltimore I made 2 grocery stops in my own area, and walked in my door just after 2.  While it was chilly when I first got out on deck by the time I was home it was over 90.

I’ve been pretty busy since arriving home, but finally got to my guest survey Wednesday afternoon and have completed a negative home covid test.  I’ll do another in a few days.

I’m a small ship person at heart, although size isn’t everything (I found Allure better laid out than Adventure).  I’ve now sailed every class of Royal ships except for Freedom Class and am not sure that’s in the cards.  There were a number of issues on the cruise, primarily awkward tendering and likely staffing issues which may be related to a slow process for crew visas and over-worked and over-extended crews.  My heart is still with the Vision and Radiance (and I miss Empress) classes but pretty much believe that any day at sea is better than a day on land.  While I’m unlikely to return to Adventure and her sisters, I’m certainly thankful that I did so.
