Off Quantum 5/23 Double Whammy Covid and Noro

Recommended Posts

We just got off the Quantum of the Seas and had a excellent fun cruise to Alaska with a few exceptions

First about mid way through people started complaining they had food poisoning but it turned out it was Noro virus which was confirmed by some guests who were so sick they saw a doctor while in port in Canada

Also mid way and more towards the end we started hearing of positive Covid

For us on our last day(Canada port) I woke up with a headache and slight cough 😳🙈…..took a self Covid test which came back Negative…..was hungover so figured that was the reason and I drank lots of water n took advil 💊💊

Near afternoon I starting feeling a little congested so we decided to self quarantine fully the last day

We told our cabin steward not to worry about cleaning the room and we ordered in room service all day and the wifey wore a double mask and got the tray at the door from him

Then we did another self Covid test each on embark morning and both were negative 🤔🙃….So we were happy and went to the hotel for a night….while there I still had a funny feeling I had Covid based on the coughing etc so we stayed in the hotel and ordered in UberEats where they dropped it off outside our hotel room…..great Fried clams and burgers  😜

Fast forward to yesterday and we fly home and both my wife and I do another Covid test and now both are Positive 😳😳🙈

We took another test this morning and those were positive as well

On our flight we wore double kn95 masks each and luckily had a empty seat next to us

So while it was was excellent excellent fun cruise it sucked we now have Covid and are gonna quarantine till Sunday/Monday at least 😷😷😷

Read a lot of posts from others who tested positive and or had Noro virus 🙈🙈……luckily it seems everyone’s doing ok 😀🙏🏻🙏🏻…..a few got both Covid and Noro 😳😳🙈

For us getting Covid was a risk we knew could happen and we wore our masks almost everywhere including outside, excursions etc but it only takes being around someone while eating or drinking that has it and bam you’re screwed 🤔😳🙈🙈😓😷😷😷😷…..And luckily with being vaccinated and double boosted the symptoms aren’t bad….the wife is Asymptomatic

And here we were happy we had evaded Covid and even a damn regular cold for the past 2 years 🙈🙈

Few other observations are the cruise had over 4,000+ guests and people wearing masks were a very very slim majority

Elevators were jam packed with people and few masks to be seen  😷😷

Same with packed shows and the casino each day

We wore ours everywhere including in the casino and even outside but of course had to take them off to eat n drink…..And there were loads of people starting on the flight and continuing on the cruise who were hacking and coughing and no mask on …..So I’m sure that on one of those times I was eating or drinking Boom that’s when I was around a coughing hacker and got it

A year ago this forum was full of people demanding the return of cruising with no masks or restrictions.

They’ve (almost) got what they wanted, and this is the result.

Bottom line - Covid will find its way on to almost every sailing on almost every ship. It’s up to you to decide whether that’s a problem. If it is, don’t cruise. If not, go! But don’t complain if you get it. That’s the risk of spending a week in a confined space with 4,000 other people.

Yeah I agree that every cruise now will have positive Covid cases and we knew that going on it

Even trying to be the safest we could by wearing masks 99% of the time we still got it

Being vaccinated and double boosted we weren’t to concerned about serious symptoms if we got it…..What concerns us the most is the thought of having to quarantine on board or once back at port….They took off a decent group of people once back in Seattle who had to then quarantine for (5) days at least…..ok this cruise we lost one day due to self quarantining

And for us we were able to change some work things this week till next week

Had a NY cruise booked for September but we canceled that now just due to not wanting to deal w possible quarantining in NY after the cruise or flight change ups etc

We ARE keeping our Mexico cruise though in November where we can drive to the port and don’t need hotels etc

The gentleman who went to the hospital in Canada did not go see a doctor while in port. He had been transported to medical on the ship in crisis and was transferred to the hospital by ambulance.

Correct but I read another post from someone who did see a doctor while in port

I would hate to have covid and noro at the same time.     Ugghh!!!

I have only seen one person who has confirmed case of norovirus and Covid, and it was not the OP. It was the gentleman who was taken off the ship in Victoria. He has been released from the hospital and is supposed to be trying to fly today from Seattle if they made it back to the states by ferry.

I was on the Navi in February, and then again the end of April.  In the meantime masks became voluntary, and the Windjammer became self-serve.

I knew no masks at the least would bring back respiratory infections.  The ones we all used to get before COVID.  I went home with an infection almost every cruise for years before COVID.

But, the Windjammer self-serve is what really bothered me, because it's such a golden opportunity for Noro and respiratory illnesses, plus COVID.

So, what I started doing was to use hand sanitizer again like I was back in 2020.  When I sat down to eat, and when I went in my cabin.  Like the OP, I wear masks all the time on ships unless I'm distanced from other people, eating, or drinking.  I also wouldn't get on an elevator if it had more than 4 people on it already.

It's not over until it's over, if ever. Noro will never be over.

I think people would be surprised if they tested everyone for other viruses such as the flu, there would be positive cases on most every ship.  I ended up with a sinus infection on our EN cruise in April.  Viruses are always around.  Colds, flu, noro, covid.  They will always be around.  We haven't worn masks except at Dr's offices for well over a year  and always only where required.  We've never tested positive but we also don't go running to get tested with every sniffle.  Our internist thinks testing is way overdone and she's not the only Dr who thinks so.  My BIL and our DS and DDIL have all had covid in the last couple of weeks.  Mild cold symptoms, two with low grade temps, one with no temp.  Plus we know several other people who have had it all with the same minor symptoms.

Speaking only for myself, I am very happy I might have found a solution to not coming home sick after a cruise.  I was getting very, very tired of it.  Every.Single.Cruise.

I cruised for 58 days from Feb-May this year, plus went to MI to see family.  Lots and lots of people, airplanes, airports, cruise ships, and I didn't get a cold or anything else.

Yeah, I want to avoid COVID, too.  But, I like that I have a pretty good way to not make myself deliberately sick in other ways now, too.  That's why I like wearing masks and using hand sanitizer now.

We plan on continuing to wear masks also

Some more people from my cruise posted they tested positive for Covid once home

Luckily the vaccines are working and no major complications/ problems other than feeling crappy, coughing, weak n tired or some with hardly any symptoms at all

We had to shuffle work things around till next week but got that all taken care of

DW and I were also on this cruise.  We never heard any stories of people getting sick during the cruise, so reading of it here is news to me.  We did see the ambulance at the ship in Victoria.  We didn't know what it was for though.

That said, we did encounter a fair amount of people on the ship who were absolute....well, if I say the word, I'll be put in time out again.  Some were in large groups and they did not care about others.  They were coughing openly without covering their mouths among other things.  I did say something once but the response was in Spanish and not very nice.

The cruise was a ton of fun but looking at the crowds during the parties and thinking about the self-serve in the WJ, I'm not the least bit surprised.  DW and I have been sick for 2 days now but we've tested twice and both times were negative.  I think we have sinus infections.

Agree, my recent Cruises were just like PreCV. Last Month was on B4B and every week by Day 4-5 Passengers start Coughing, even My Daughter had a Sinus Infection on our Ship over Easter. She was Quarantined to Cabin for 24hrs, after her 2 CV Negative Test. Only time was Sick with Noro caught it from my Grand Daughter on her 1st Birthday. Funny thing even PreCV on Cruise's really didn't touch anything others do with their Hands, no Railings, Chairs, Door handles or Elevator Buttons. Even though Cruise several times a yr haven't been on a Ship Elevator in over 20yrs. I'm Fortunate, Healthiest in my Family and really never get sick(Knock on Wood).

In 32 cruises, I've had one cold and one sinus infection.  And, this was the only sinus infection I have ever had in my life.  We don't wear masks anywhere except medical facilities where they are required.  And, we are living our lives normally.  Church, gym, movies, restaurants, work (DH), parties, family get togethers, hugging family and friends, beach vacations, 2 b2b cruises.  I also don't use hand sanitizer except on the ship.  DH did have one complaint on our EN b2b cruise.  He said, every time he went to the bathroom in the public restrooms onboard, at least 1/2, and many times more like 3/4 of the men never washed their hands.  They just walked right out the door.  DH always does, everywhere, at home and in public restrooms.   We are rarely sick.

I am glad your husband washes his hands in the restroom.

You needed to join the main FB roll call for our cruise which has over 600 people on it

There you got a good daily input on who was sick, tested positive, thought they had food poisoning etc, Noro

Theres now a great poll posted and people are all posting who tested positive once they got home even

Most people didn’t report to medical when they got sick, unfortunately. Hope yours doesn’t turn into Covid. Your symptoms are what a lot experienced before turning positive.

We also encountered a similar group while waiting for a photographer. Start spouting at me in Spanish and then told me he didn’t understand English but I explained to him that he understood plenty as he had just commented in Spanish to his wife about something I had said to my DH in English. He told me he didn’t understand, I told him in Spanish that he understood it all. He walked away lol

Ok.  I really backed off from FB a couple years ago but I'll make an exception and look at the page.  I just sent an invite request.

Belay that.  I canceled the request.  It is what it is at this point.  Plus, I'll just get kicked out anyways when I tell them how dumb of an idea it was to leave those stupid little ducks all over the ship.  I'm sure that didn't help.  I don't even want to be associated with that stuff.

It isn’t 600 from the cruise anyway. It is a lot from the cruises before and after. A lot of posts just copying what others posted in unknown groups.

There’s definitely a lot of first hand accounts and info

If I had to guess you’re probably the same lady over  there who always contradicts what people say and who wondered why people blocked her out of the blue 🤣🤣🤣🤣

update: More reports coming in from people who tested negative with the at home tests once off the ship but felt so crappy they went and had a PCR test done which came back positive

Others are still waiting for PCR reports
