Well....I done did it.

It's my Birthday Month.  So, as a present to me, I booked a Haven Spa Suite on the Getaway.  This one is solo.

It's sailing from Orlando, going to Great Stirrup Cay, the Dominican and Puerto Rico.  Been to all those ports, but it's been a while.

Been kicking around an NCL cruise since this was done with the last of my FCCs with NCL.  It's been 4 years since I sailed the Getaway.  I have fond memories of both "Away" ships, but in particular, the Getaway, as it holds fond personal and emotional memories for me.

So, pretty excited about this one.

Pricing is good, especially for an H9.  Plus, my TA is picking up my tips (~$140), giving me $300 OBC.  AMEX Platinum is picking up my insurance, giving me an extra 2 specialty dinners, providing some champagne, and also giving me $300 OBC.

So, about a month away.  Will update planning stages as they happen.  Will give a pictorial review in real time from Embarkation to Disembarkation.

Now, to navigate the ever changing world of getting a flight.

I'm a big proponent of flying in the day of embarkation, as I can get an early flight, and have back up flights in case the first flight doesn't work out for any reason, and I can do all carry on luggage (which I have, and I can).

Might have to change that thinking given how crazy Delta Airlines has been.  I'm not even sure they'll make it a month to stay in business.  My, how the mighty (and mostly arrogant) have fallen.

Following along...and looking forward to your review.  I will be on 09/03 solo as well, but my first time on the Getaway.

Looks like you live where I live so yeah, Delta is an issue.  I normally fly in the day before and I would but the only flight I can make gets me there late evening and I wouldn't even be able to do minimal sight seeing on top of that NY hotel prices for a holiday weekend (even if I am paying with points!) makes that seem like such a waste of $$$.  So I decided to do a 1-way rental and drive to NY.  Should be there by 10AM.  Car rental return is a couple of blocks from MCT.  I will take a 1-way flight back LGA to CMH as there are no time constraints on my return.

I did check Amtrak and I don't have 15 - 18 hours to spare so that was not going to work.  I'll be interested to hear what you end up doing for pre/post transport.

Yeah…..I think all the time how it would be really fun to get a bunch of us CC posters all together on the same ship at the same time.

Through the years, I’ve met some of the posters here.  Always fun times…… good to meet and greet with them.

I’ve been Princess “curious” for a long while.  Just never found a sailing, or a ship, or a destination they offered that tickled my fancy.

I’d love to hear about yours.

Can't wait to follow along on another graphic guy's cruise!

Too bad your SO can't join you but from previous reviews understand her tough schedule.

Like you I sail a lot solo - just got back from B2B2B Escape!  But in Oct. DH has agreed to tour Rome and then go on Escape Greek Isles.  That's enough for him but I will probably stay on solo for the crossing that follows.

Everyone gets to know you quickly - you will no doubt see a lot of familiar faces - NCL is so welcoming to all guests including solos.  When I went on Celebrity, it was an issue every time at the MDR.  Either, "Oh, you are alone?" and not very interested in finding me a table for 2 that I could occupy alone.  Or trying to insist I join a group table (once in awhile I did). On NCL often the best window seat table or 2!  Especially on Escape with reduced numbers!

Once you use up your FCC, will be interesting to see if you choose NCL.  From your previous posts that seems to be somewhat up in the air.

The new Haven menus are amazing (try the surf and turf and you will see the "lobster tail" is actually 1/2 a small lobster with a claw!)  but must say food all over Escape was really really good, always piping hot even in the pub!  Latitudes has expanded to allow you to use your first voucher in Le Bistro, Cagney's, Ocean Blue or Onda w/bottle of wine (pared down comp list).  Second is just like an SDP and can even be used in Food Republic (or Pincho in case of Escape) for 4 items.  SDP is unlimited apps, soups, salads, desserts -- just select an entree (1 entree only in Le Bistro or Cagney's).  Have fun with it!

Sounds like you got a good deal and that OBC will be sweet!

Have a great time and thanks in advance for taking us along!

Grappling with that now.

I nixed the Amtrak idea.  Looking at a train (and stops) ride meant a multi-day journey….ONE WAY.  Plus, given I at least wanted at least a little shut-eye, I needed at least what they call a “room-ete”.  Last train ai took was in Germany, and that was very fast, on a very clean train, and only a few hours, and was relatively inexpensive.

Amtrak?  Well over a $1,000 on a slow train that may or may not be modern and/or clean.  No thanks!

Besides, I was looking at sailing out of NY/NJ to Bermuda.  That changed.  Now, I’m sailing out of MCO to Eastern Caribbean.  So, train travel is even more difficult.

Still looking like same day travel might actually be the best choice.  As you noted, getting in the day before means doing little more than getting to the hotel late and sleeping for a few hours before heading to the pier.

Hotels near the pier are crazy expensive, too.  And, if my flight is cancelled/delayed, I’m back at taking another flight the day of departure.

Looking at a one way rental car.  But, that means at least a stopover somewhere around Atlanta to spend the night.

Delta has really screwed up this time.  Frontier is a possibility, but I hate flying them.

I’ll see how this plays out.  I’ve got a month to play around with transport to the pier plans.

Planes, trains and automobiles....just to get to the cruise ship.  Aiyiyi - keep us posted.  Yeesh! Even the thought of Frontier signals desperation.  Staying tuned...

You summed up my feelings about NCL pretty well.

Good to hear about the menus.  Also good to hear Ocean Blu is now included for vouchers.  That's a change.  Love FOOD REPUBLIC.  But, to my knowledge, Getaway doesn't have that venue.  But, I haven't sailed her since she was refurbished a few years ago.

I actually love doing these live reports.  I hope it helps those who cruise.  I know others' reports have certainly helped me.

Glad you enjoy them.

Old backpack was getting a bit tired and tattered.  Nothing wrong with it.  It has seen all the coasts of the U.S.A., the Caribbean, Mexico, France, Italy, U.K., Germany, Spain and probably a few more that I don't recall right now.  It is now my back up.

Replaced with the brand, spanking new backpack.  This will be it's initial trip.......

We haven't sailed them for 10 years but they began the love affair.

Each had a purpose:

--Casino offer too good to pass up (WHY an offer after 10 years who knows)

--AK cruise w/ family on the new Discovery Princess (looks gorgeous)

--80s cruise w/ BFF

(had Baltics booked on GREAT deal...it got cancelled)

(had UK booked as we had Europe air credits to use, dream trip...but felt being overseas for nearly 3 weeks right now isn't prudent with my Dad's needs; chose AK instead)

I'm a sucker for a good deal. Not necessarily the cheapest but the best value.

Being drawn back again & again to Celebrity, NCL & Princess for the sort of all-inclusive pricing option.

Once drink packages began being offered it was a no brainer for us.

Now that we are BOTH retired looking to expand outside of the Caribbean (tho still a fan!).

But with Dad in assisted living will not venture TOO far for now.

(tho we do have Med booked on NCL in 2023 w/ our 3YA kids; hoping that is a go)

Now, you got our attention ... going to follow along. Yeah, we're offered a 50% off deal to bid up to Haven from our SP suite last month too, most of them smaller than the 2 bedrooms we booked.

Hey, I recognize that TA luggage tag & got one on my backpack 🎒 too

Have had that luggage tag for a while, now.  My motto…..”if it’s free, it’s me”!  LOL!

We think alike.

Regardless of the cruise line, if I find a deal “too good to pass up”, I’m usually booking that cruise line and that particular ship.

There was only a couple of cruises I booked and did not look at the cost.  One was a family trip to the Mediterranean (MSC).  The other was taking the GF on a trip because she needed a break after caring for her Father, who had just passed after a long illness.  That was the last Getaway sailing we did and why the ship holds particular significance.

I shop cruises like I compare prices at the grocery store.  If there’s something that is a particular bargain, I’m on it like a June Bug on a string.  Doesn’t matter where the ship is going, which ship it’s on, etc.  This is particularly true since I retired.  I have lots of flexibility.

Generally speaking (not always), but Caribbean cruises tend to offer the best deals.  And, the least expensive cruises to the Caribbean tend to be during hurricane season.

That being the case, I’ve only had one cruise canceled because of a hurricane (an NCL cruise, as luck would have it).

And, was only on board for one particularly “interesting” cruise where the ship suddenly listed in the middle of the night (made for a great alarm clock) during hurricane season (also NCL).

Best deals I’ve ever seen in 20+ years of cruising, have been in the last 12-18 months.  Obvious reasons for that, but I had never seen Alaska cruises as cheap as my sailing (RCCL) this past April.  Caribbean is relatively cheap right now, too (which is why I booked this one).  Had NEVER seen Celebrity cruises as cheap as they were this time last year (restart).

I should gamble more.  I see people talk about their comped cruises.  Best I can get is a cabin with some cheap champagne comped.  LOL!

Funny our most expensive cruise ever was the 1st one back on the Edge last July--worth every penny!

We went to expand our cruising horizon & that will cost more. Means fewer trips .

But worth it.

But with Dad needing extra support we will stick close by.

So for now I'll keep snagging deals. (thx @JamieLogicalfor sharing cruiseplum.com...that's how I found the Getaway w/ no solo supplement in Aug).

But if family & friends want to go--WE ARE GOING. Cost be damned (within reason)

Regarding the casino cruises. We have each won 2 cruises playing TX Hold Em tournaments on the ship. DH won last one in Nov. 2019 & it is finally sailing this Dec.

NO idea where the Princess offer came from...(again...been TEN years since we sailed them!)

Carnival--well I had to submit my Caesars card(have never cruised them--it was something of theirs on FB). This was after 18 mos. of our ONLY vacations being in VEGAS. Where there was NOTHING to do but GAMBLE. And poker has been wonky there, so LOTS more video poker was played. So Carnival is under the impression that is our normal gambling $.

NOPE. Not even in Vegas. That was COVID Vegas gambling $.

And we gamble even less on a cruise!

But hey, I'll take a free cruise even if it's only once!

(We have freebies being tossed out on Urcomped--check them out, just submit your casino players cards--been on RCCL & MSC. Thought an 8 nt Anthem cruise this fall would work--we LOVED the Anthem. But nope. Hoping for some good offers in Feb-Apr)

@KKB…I haven’t been to Vegas since before COVID.  I used to go there 2X-3X/year for conferences.  Then COVID hit, and then I retired.  Haven’t been back since.  I’ll get back there.  It’s just there are other places I want to go, first.

Really want to do a Baltic and Far East cruise, first.

That said, still trying to track down a flight to MCO.  It’s only a 2 hour flight for me.  But, I’m trying really, really hard not to fly Frontier out of CVG.

It is NOT the same, in many many ways. I'm just not feeling it anymore.

I ventured out the week it reopened in June 2020.
It was amazing. Rented a car & drove ALL OVER--and up LV Blvd in the middle of the day.

Wasn't crowded & I loved that.

We were married there 28 years ago so it is near & dear.

We had planned to retire there but the water issues have scraped that.

We decided we will go for a reason--a concert, March Madness, but not the several times a year anymore.

Plus when I did the math we can cruise for a week for less than our weekly budget in Vegas...

Just called the pre-cruise Concierge.  Actually got through to a real live person in about 10 minutes.

She was quite knowledgable and said she was one of the ones they kept on during the shutdown working to help hone customer service processes.  She is now the Customer Service Manager and insists she work the phones and emails for customer service at least once/month so she can see/hear first hand what needs to be done.  As I mentioned to her, "how has it gone during startup?"

She admitted that it had been both good and bad.  And, they had a ways to go.  The issue, according to her, was no one wanted to do the phone work.  She said she loved talking to customers, even if they had a complaint....that there was a sense of accomplishment taking someone who's sour at NCL and turning them into happy guests.

She went on that the challenge isn't getting people who want to be a part of NCL, but getting people who want to keep up on the changing health protocols everyplace NCL sails, and at the same time, communicate the internal NCL protocols to the guests.  It's a couple extra layers of education and communication they never had to deal with before.  And, that's mainly the cause of most delays when you call on the phone....not finding workers, but finding those that have skills beyond just answering the phone and looking up processes and protocols. They are working on it.  But, as she said, so many experienced people they relied on before had left.  My guess is they didn't come back after the startup.  But, that's just an opinion.

Very mature and clearly several cuts above some recent experiences with NCL...even if you could get them on the phone.

Again, this is according to her, they had been sailing at about 70% capacity and expected that to remain the same throughout the Summer, at least with U.S. Sailings to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Oh yeah, she also made note of the fact I wanted memory foam pillows instead of feather pillows. 😉

I'm sure she had better things to do than to talk to me at length about NCL's business practices.  But, I appreciated her taking the time to answer my probing questions and to give me a peak into what they're challenges are.

In the end, she said to call customer service any time for any questions or needs.  Stock answer, but good to know, nonetheless.
