Do you put them on at home before flying or should I wait til I pickup my luggage before it goes to the ship ?

Just a tip from one who's been there.  Before we leave home, I print the luggage tags.  Then I fold and trim them to fit inside a clear plastic "convention" style ID case.  When I leave the hotel to go to the ship, I pull out some small zip ties and attach the tags to the bags.

 

Saves looking around for a stapler at the hotel.

Or you can just get them from the dock workers at the port. You will need to write your name and cabin number on them. Haven't printed and carried bag tags since the stopped sending them to us.

HAL clear luggage plastic cases with metal connectors for attaching to luggage are available at Amazon. I have a set for cruising with HAL and a different set, narrower in width, for cruising with Celebrity. They are fantastic and of course place on our luggage when leaving from hotel to the cruise port.

In the absence of the late lamented Doc Dance, luggage tags are one of our pre-cruise rituals.  DH prints them in color on photo paper, trims and folds.  Then we use a small hole punch, through which we thread a large and colorful (just because) rubber band.  When we retrieve bags at the airport, we pop our tags on and off we go!  We get a LOT of comments on our fancy tags.  😀

These work for me in spite of some difficulty getting the connector ends properly aligned when attaching to luggage.

We got these - twice as many for the same money as listed above - heavy plastic and metal screw-in connectors. Really happy with them - and 8 in  package.

That’s what we used.  No complaints.
