Rare cruisestitch Posted August 27, 2022 #2 Share Posted August 27, 2022 (edited) As answered already, First the cruise line needs to make some money. All major refurbishments are on hold. Only required maintenance will be done in the near future. Edited August 27, 2022 by cruisestitch

jelayne Posted August 27, 2022 #4 Share Posted August 27, 2022 Backing out if contracts is expensive. They need to add capacity to grow or stagnate and the S and M class ships are very popular.
deliver42 Posted August 27, 2022 #5 Share Posted August 27, 2022 They just can't stop a new build. The shipyards have done all the work in scheduling for them and everyone else. There are parts, and workers hired for the particular job, as well as subcontracters. Much easier for a refurb.

Plus the light at the end of a "new build" tunnel is an entire ship full of new revenue potential. That's not the case for a refurb.

Gutting staterooms makes a huge difference for passengers, and they're willing to pay for it.
