It's very logical, but perhaps you take exception to the estimated "worth" of the "included" items? Eg - if I buy nothing onboard, and upgrade nothing, my cruise fare includes some assigned worth for each meal (for discussion's sake, let's say it's $10 for dinner). So, if I buy the the upcharge JR meal @ $15, then it's logical that the cruiseline is saying that they believe it's actually worth $25. My last visit to a Johnny Rockets was a few weeks ago in Windsor, Canada, Caesars Casino. For 4 of us, the bill came to over $120.00, tip not included. Hell, a burger alone is up to ~$14.00 https://www.caesars.com/content/dam/empire/wcl/restaurants/johnny-rockets/menu/wcl-menu-jr-small.pdf Are you comparing a double burger in a Caesar's casino in Canada to a ship that already has included food? Even then, $30 a person is a double burger, deluxe milkshake, bacon cheese fry per person. That's a lot. Where on Carnival, burgers have zero cost, and the fare is cheaper.

I'm saying that $12.00 is a bargain. And I compare the service, variety, comfort and so on. You can wait in a long line at Guys have you stuff thrown on a plate, dress your hamburger in a fix'ins island that who knows how many people have had their hand in it, coughed in, spit in and so on, tasted something and put it back, doesn't include a drink, which I have experienced several times, just to fight/look for a place to sit down on the Lido deck, without salt & pepper or napkins on the table if you are lucky enough to get a table. If you want a drink, you have to go to the Iguana bar (more than likely wait in line there, too) or elsewhere to get a drink while your food gets cold. You can do all that or more while I'm being served a nice hot meal, in the air conditioned venue with a drink included by a friendly face (that's back before masks) and on occasion the servers break out into dance to music I really enjoy. Yep, I'll pay the upcharge. NOTE: I never discussed taste of the burger, that is way to subjective. I like JR's better than Guy's, that's my opinion and I don't expect everyone/anyone to feel the same. I've given my very specific reasons why I like JR's. Those are my reasons. You don't have to agree, I'm not putting a gun against your head to eat there. It's just my reasons, it's what I like. You do you and I'll do me.

We decided for RCCL again since we are very loyal and cruised only once with carnival 15 years ago. We'll see how our experience will be after 6 years being away and can still simply reconsider with every cruise... Not that JR is the deal breaker, but it adds up... While rcl offers fewer free venues for lunch at dinner it's pretty equal. Some that are free on carnival for lunch have a better menu for dinner and a charge. On the flip side of the coin I hated most everything I had on carnivals Mdr dinner menu. I did 3 on carnival and the dinner was so bad I came back to royal. Pizza on carnival better but I need more than pizza. Guys on carnival switched to frozen fries etc. Try some oasis class rcl ships where have more like the solarium and the cafe with roast beef for lunch. It wins overall for me. Ive seen a 2011 compass for Majesty and it was still $4.95. Pretty sure here was no Johnny Rockets on Majesty in 2004. It was added later on, maybe 2007. jeh10641 Posted September 26, 2022 #36 Share Posted September 26, 2022 I first came across johnny Rockets on a business trip to Salt Lake City, I believe in the mid1980s. I thought they were very good and was happy when franchises appeared in the Seattle area. My only on-board experience was in 2008 on Navigator but I do not remember the cost. I am very happy to dine for free at the burger bar on HAL's ships by the pool with free ice tea. I do not mind paying for their shakes. I look forward to JR on Anthem next October, even for $12 plus. I also remember it being included and the coupons in the Crown and Anchor coupon books. I have not been on a Royal Caribbean cruise for a while, but we are going on one in December, I’m sure there will be many changes. Did they have the speciality dining back in early 2000? I don’t recall it back then.

Ret MP Posted September 26, 2022 #42 Share Posted September 26, 2022 (edited) Just as a side note and it has nothing to do with nothing: What kind of hamburger do you buy at the grocery store? 90% lean or higher? 80%? I get 80% because I believe fat is where the taste comes from in meat, like well marbled Ribeye Steak, and 90% is a little too dry for me. I like the fat just dripping off of the hamburger bun. 😃😃😃 Edited September 26, 2022 by Ret MP 2

Seville2Cabo Posted September 26, 2022 #44 Share Posted September 26, 2022 8 hours ago, Another_Critic said: But on Royal, you're paying $12 + the underlying cost of the subsidized "free" meal included with your cruise fare. If you are in the port just doing your own thing and decided to stop for lunch in a local restaurant and have lunch and a few beers, do you add the "sunk cost" that you could have had the meal for free on the ship (plus the cost of beer if you have a package)? I guess I don't look at it that way. I look at is as I can eat in the dining room for free, or speciality restaurants for about $25 per day. I will chose speciality every time. Only time I was not happy was Sabor on Liberty a few years ago. (Although living in Mexico I may have had too high of expectations) On the other hand, maybe Royal thinks Chops is worth $90 per person, so they subtract $12 and sell it for $78. Who knows how they come up with their pricing???? 2

Yea, you can go to the counter and order a shake with your drink package or diamond voucher. I did it yesterday on Adventure. However, it does NOT work for ben and jerrys (at least the diamond voucher doesn’t) I heard that if you wanted just sides like a chili cheese fries and drink, they could charge you 1/2 price for that. I had the UDP, so i could just get the snack today and not worry about it but the table close to me inquired about the snack. On a ship like Harmony being able only to go to windjammer (limited hours) or mini bites on lido deck is something that never made me think about this issue before. Harmony also has Cafe Promenade, Sorrentos, and Park Cafe. If you limit yourself the windjammer and Mini Bites, that's on you, not on Royal.

The amount might be same, my impression is that the included part seems more appealling on Carnival. Sandwiches and pizza in other outlets is not a big value for me. Also I pointed out Windjammer and mini bites, because this is pretty weak for a pool deck and such a sized ship.We still decid for RCCL and I assume we won't regret, since we enjoyed every single cruise with them. They go straight from the freezer to the grill and I leave them slightly pink in the center. Hmm, I think I know what's for dinner tonight! 1
