Belize & Honduras with a resident driver?

Hello all, we are visiting Belize & Honduras in February.  We are thinking of branching out on our own vs using a ship excursion or independent travel company.  We were hoping to locate a resident of these areas & pay them to show us their country & what the locals do.  Question?  Has anyone done this?  How safe do you feel it is?  what are the concerns?

try tours by locals.  We have had a lot of success all over with them.  The itineraries are usually pretty good.

I  second Tours By Locals. Rates are usually "per tour" and not per person.

Tours are frequently structured for what the travelers want to see and do.

We did TBL in Roatan last year.

Well worth the (reasonable) $$$.

Oh......TBL does an excellent job vetting the tour guides. Some booking agencies do next to nothing.

Happy Sails to you

We talked to a taxi driver said we wanted a couple hour tour, worked out ok, he carried a foot long knife with him, he would be waving at people then tell us they were a crooked politician or that store owner was a thief , we found it interesting.

We used Bodden Tours when we were in Belize this past March. We had hired a driver to drive us around to show us the sites. We told him that the only tourist trap that we wanted to go to was the sloth & monkey sanctuary. He took us there first so we could beat the crowds. Then we asked him to show us some out-of-the way places that the locals go. He brought us to places that weren't tourist traps. He wouldn't admit it but we think he even brought us to his house. The house was right on the water with a nice beach. About 50 yards out into the water was an area where they do dolphin excursions. We got see the show while standing on the beach. Our guide went in the house to feed the dog and he brought us bottled water which is why we think it was his house. We told him we wanted to eat local food at restaurant where the locals eat. He brought us to a place that had great food. We loved that tour and would recommend Bodden Tours to anyone
