Dunedin Train

Since it is shorter route now, does it still take 6 hours RT? DH does not want to be on a train for 6 hrs. We are canceling.

What other sight seeing options might you recommend. We are not particularly interested in the wildlife.

The train trip is now much shorter than six hours. We went on it several years ago (the six-hour version) and were underwhelmed. The scenery is interesting but IMO, not spectacular.

The train excursion details for a Princess cruise states -

I would think the train trip will be about 3 hours or so.

We went on the train in November 2018 and really enjoyed it. We booked it privately and were bussed from the port to the beautiful railway station. 

If you want something else to do in Dunedin, I suggest you look at Viator or similar for some ideas.

Another thought... you can do the Seasider from dunedin station about an hour...

Have done that one. It's a nice little side trip to fill in some time having been to Dunedin five or six times already.

So unless your cruise ship is in Port Chalmers/Dunedin on any of these dates, you miss out. Looking at the cruise ship port schedule, there is only one date when there is a cruise ship in port -29th January  Azamara Quest which is port overnight.
