reeinaz Posted December 22, 2022 #1 Share Posted December 22, 2022 The terms say that there is a 25% discount on drinks over $20. So if my drink is $24, I'd be charged $18 for it? I'm used to other lines where I would just have to pay the difference. CHEERS! INCLUDES: All spirits (including cocktails), as well as beer and wine by the glass with a $20.00 or lower menu price Sodas, Zero-Proof frozen cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffee, hot tea, 500ml bottled water and other non-alcoholic bottled beverages Packaged water in the Dining Room and Specialty Restaurants 25% discount off the menu price for any spirit or wine by the glass above $20.00 25% discount off the menu price for wine and champagne by the bottle 25% discount off beverage seminars and classes
hard_eight Posted December 22, 2022 #2 Share Posted December 22, 2022 Not sure I've seen one over $20? If you pay for it, does it count against your 15 allotted drinks?

So I was just curious. That 15 stands even if you don't have the drink package. But without the drink package you can get pitchers, fishbowls, buckets of beer, and doubles. I've never heard how those get counted.

Well, pre-covid they didn't! I'll find out in a few weeks!
Rare ninjacat123 Posted December 22, 2022 #5 Share Posted December 22, 2022 I saw the same thing for a glass of sparkling wine in Steakhouse that was $22 per glass. I think I would have to pay 75% of the cost according to Cheers. Not gonna do it😉

Sharables don't count towards your cheers count and you'll pay full freight for those and they generally won't sell you a double because they can't separate the first free drink and the topper pour so that is out, plus a double isn't really meant as a sharable like the buckets, pitchers or diabetesbowls. There also won't be much that isn't covered, you'll have to go out of your way to find anything over $20 and the few options they used to have regularly have pretty much vanished. I always thought is was $20 was covered and you paid the difference and got 25% discount on that overage amount.

I assume Rudi's or some other spots on the new ships too. I know the casinos used to also have the expensive Grey Goose hidden. x lindsay x Posted December 23, 2022 #9 Share Posted December 23, 2022 As a scotch drinker I have yet to find a glass of scotch over $20 on any Carnival ship. There was a high end Whistle Pig bourbon on the Horizon that was $50 but I'd never pay that for a bourbon, scotch yes, bourbon no. On Celebrity and other lines where you'll pay the difference, you can find many more high end wines and spirits.
angela12345 Posted December 23, 2022 #10 Share Posted December 23, 2022 Over $20 I have found ... 3 tequilas at Blue Iguana (out of 20) 1 champagne, 2 cognacs, 1 rum, 2 scotch, 1 tequila repeat at the steakhouse 1 rum at Red Frog 1 cabernet at Rudi'shttps://cruisespotlight.com/carnival-cruise-line-drink-menus-and-pricing/

But someone told me there are unpeated scotches that I might like. Do you know if Carnival carries any unpeated ones or would they be over $20 ones anyway?

vacruisin Posted December 23, 2022 #13 Share Posted December 23, 2022 (edited) Wifey and I get CHEERS all the time and for the most part it works great for us but there are a couple of limitations. We never have tried to get a drink that costs over $20 so I can't speak to that BUT we have had issues when trying to get fishbowls. We've been flat out told that we can't get a fishbowl period! We can't get one using CHEERS but we also are not allowed to purchase it outside of CHEERS just paying for it ourselves. I believe we've had that same issue when trying to buy drinks in the souvenir glasses also (its been quite a few cruises since we have tried to do that and I believe that is the reason we stopped trying). I don't understand why Carnival would limit CHEERS purchaser's options for buying drinks. My only thought is that they have not figured out a way to count the drinks outside of CHEERS combined with the drinks purchased using CHEERS to ensure people don't go over the 15 drink per day limit. Never tried to buy a fishbowl but have bought buckets and multiple bottles of wine in addition to the 15 with cheers. I'm not entirely sure it's all about the 15 limit or else why offer discounts on bottles of wine? Is it alcohol discrimination lol? It seems strange and not a smart move to limit these additional sales, very few folks are going to drink 15 and be looking for sharables just to consume all by themselves (and at full price w/added auto grat). It also causes a issue for folks that are traveling in groups and some may want cheers but also want to buy drinks for their friends/family to have (ie buckets, pitchers, tubes, bottles of wine etc) or just simply buy someone an individual drink. Not everyone has the same budget and this gets Carnival all up in folk's financials by trying to nanny up in folk's business. It just doesn't seem like it would be that big of an issue to have these random blanket bans on purchasing only certain additional alcohol types. The whole concept is odd. Totally agree with all you said but it has definitely been our experience when trying to buy fishbowls particularly. I wanna say we have even been denied trying to purchase bucket of beers. I've had to get them individually with my CHEERS and then stock up to make a full bucket. It may just be different crews with different understanding of the rules but that has been our experience.

Say you're traveling with a group but you bought cheers and want to buy everyone else a round, can't do it because it counts against your total? What if they are a group of beer drinkers, a bucket would save a little over an individual rounds, sorry can't do that. I guess it makes for a good excuse not to pay for drinks for your traveling companions but it's the antithesis of cheers lol. I guess they mean you can order a drink, wait 5 min, order another and then cheers yourself double-fisted. 😁

reeinaz Posted December 23, 2022 Author #19 Share Posted December 23, 2022 I have NEVER been able to purchase a fishbowl or bucket of beer if I had CHEERS. I know other people have been able to, but not me. I did have a wonderful poolside server though who would always come back around with a huge “shot” of Tito’s to add to my Tito’s and cranberry. I have also been able to purchase a round of shots in the souvenir shot glasses during dinner in the MDR. I think they might be more lenient if they see you’re with a group?

CruizinSusan70 Posted December 24, 2022 #22 Share Posted December 24, 2022 There are about 10 drinks that exceed 20.00. Two different rums at the Tiki Bar on the Excel Class that are 21, a 22 Cabernet at Rudi's, and the rest are at the 555 steakhouse. A 22 glass of champagne, a 21 rum, a 22 tequila, a 25 blended scotch, a 28 single malt and a 21 and 95 cognac. There are enough other choices that are covered by Cheers that I would pass on paying 75% of the cost, plus 18% gratuity.

Sitting buy the pool me (drinks everywhere from casino) and brother in law (Cheers) wanted to buy a bucket of beer and the server said we couldn't. I said yes I can, I'm buying for a "friend". She had to go ask a manager who said yes, I could buy for a "friend". However, they would not discount the bucket. It use to be that one went against Cheers and you paid full price for the others. This time none against Cheers and paid full price for all. Bottom line is make sure you tell them you are buying for a "friend" and if they say no have them get a manager.
