Wow!  I used the term hangry teenager and now I’m a bad helicopter parent with a bad child. My son is the most respectful young man I know. He is however growing an inch a month. No joke. He is stick skinny and eats all the time. No I will not send him to bed hungry.  I will allow him to take food from the buffet to enjoy later. So that all my children are well taken care of. He is the responsible one. He will take care of his needs but he doesn’t like to sit alone at a sit down restaurant. So no I won’t leave him at osheeans, while I put his sister to bed.

Some of these comments are just way overboard.

Continue to do what you need to do for your family.    I must have been a bad helicopter parent because I always had food back in the cabin for my two children to snack on when needed when they were younger.   It is a miracle they are both young adults now holding down well respected jobs.

Wonder if I’m a Doozy.  Lolol.
every kids a princes or princess while with their parents.    Then when they run free around the ship because parents think the ship is there personal baby sitter and the kids run amuck. They’re for sure no angles.  Lolol.
move been watching it all day here on my cruise this week.
there’s a ton of unsupervised kids going crazy.

on my Panama cruise last week.   Only 34 kids.     Was such a pleasure not dealing with them.
but then you have a bunch of cranky old men and women that missed their naps and wanna complain because you talk too much.   Lololol.

No you were a prepared parent.

there’s a difference.

Taking cookies away in a ziplock

is much better than taking a plate of food away and going into the elevator.
call it what you want but it’s anything but cheap.   It’s being creative.    And sanitary.

oh yea I do agree.   on land a lot of places let you take dessert to go.

Yeah well I didn’t listen to myself.  Lol

in the panoramic elevator.  But not many people know about it so I usually ride by myself. Lol.

If I had seen you I would have said "hmm looks good".   Most folks like to make a comment.

thing is, when back in room if you are not going to eat it all, best to have a container of zip lock.

BTW, that dark chocolate stuff does look good

Never once did I complain that there wasn't a place open late,  I was simply trying "prevent" a hungry 13 year old boy by asking what options are available.  When the suggestion of taking items from the buffet to have him make sandwiches was offered, I thought that would work and then up pops this thread calling us squirrels for being prepared.  Here I thought I was doing the right thing to prepare for our cruise by asking people more knowledgeable about it and instead have been basically told to let him starve, rather than use a ziplock.

I’ve never said let him starve over using a ziplock.    Im pro ziplocks. Incase you missed that part.  I have a ton with me right now.

This is a hilarious thread. I hope it keeps on going and going. For years, I have always taken a few Ziplock bags on cruises. What I do beginning the first morning in the Lido, is to take a bowl and make trail mix based on what is available: walnuts, almond slivers, pecans, Craisins, raisins and etc. I walk the covered bowl back to the cabin and pour in a Ziplock. Comes in very handy when I need a snack or if I decide to catch a soccer or NFL football game in the cabin. I don't care for comfort foods like wings, pizza and most fried items but for those who do, just ignore the naysayers and get your snacks.

This thread reminds me of an NCL cruise I was on and sitting at dinner with a bunch of solos. So this one guy was full so he decided on taking his unfinished entree back to his cabin. I asked him how he was going to heat it up at midnight since cabins don't have microwaves. His reply was "that's what hairdryers are for!"

Let that kid starve! No cake for him!

But really...you're doing it right. You're enjoying your cruise and ensuring your boy is enjoying himself by providing sustenance. I believe that's what parents are for. Food!

Based on your comments, I'm sure it would have been a treat to have your kid on my soccer team when I coached. You're one of the parent's that "gets" it.

Ziploc away, even though I choose not to do that. But, that's my choice (and I only have a hangry husband who wants a full sit down meal, much to my chagrin).

Why not just bring your ziplock with you and avoid the walk of shame with the plate lololol.
I took 2 ziplocks with me for cookies every day last week on the joy.    One bag for me.  And one for my room steward.
the server put the cookies right in my bags.   Lolol.

I was wondering the same thing. What does @uneamie expect NCL to have done? Enlarge O'Sheehan's? Add more tables? (where, exactly?) Magically make tons of food appear out of nowhere? This is a classic example of someone finding fault after the fact. (aka "they should have known, should have anticipated, etc...") Given the skewed age bracket of so many cruisers (many over 60), if anything NCL was probably expecting the old codgers to have been asleep by 1 am, not lining up for grub! 😁

Umm.....they have a working BUFFET on the all the ships. Keeping it open on NEW YEARS EVE...was my solution. There's no magic in that, just common sense. You are a classic example of finding trival fault with members and what they post.

I had no idea so many people eat in the middle of the night! I eat dinner, dessert and that’s it till breakfast. There should be some grab and go options set up for folks that eat late.

There are.  In the casino after 11 I think.
And in the observation room after the buffet closes.    At least on the joy last week.

Have you tried the store-bought frozen lava cakes.

I have, and I enjoy them.  But there is something special about the ones on Carnival, mostly texture but also just the right chocolate, that I have not been able to duplicate anywhere else.

Lot's of folks don't realize that much of the food served in restaurants isn't made to order but is pre-packed frozen items.

I said something like this once and I got a stern rebuttal from the former NCL employee (officer?) who hangs out on these boards.

Welcome to Cruise Critic

The outrage is that the buffet is closing at 9:00 instead of 11:30. The world has come to an end. Kids are starving in the halls. Crying in their rooms. Cold bags of Mac & Cheese lining the tables in staterooms.

The 13 year old will be with the roaming packs of teens at night who know exactly what to do if they are hungry.

This is in response to the people who want to know why families can't always use room service late at night:

I let my 12 year old stay at the late night kids club until it closes at 1 am when the next day is a sea day if that's what he wants to do on vacation.  NCL has a 1 am curfew for children, so I can't just send my son to O'Sheenan's by himself at 1 am for food (when he went there by himself at 12:45 one night they told him they'd serve him but he had to eat quick and leave by 1 am).  We can't do room service because other children (and my husband) are asleep at 1 am and the room service knocking would wake them.  So it was easier for me that the RC cruise we took last August had not great but good enough for my kids pizza available 24/7 so I didn't have to deal with waiting for the food to come at O'Sheenan's.  Note: on my January 8th cruise the staff either didn't notice or didn't care about my carrying my son's burger out when it was made so I could go to sleep.  We did have cereal and cookies and yogurt in the room, but he wanted hot food.

No need to make it personal now, I was just wondering what you thought an acceptable solution would have been. I think your suggestion of opening the buffet is a good one, actually. Please let's try not to attack one another here, OK? I think asking for the buffet to be open late is something worth suggesting to NCL. Actually, come to think of it, I have friends who have sailed with NCL for NYE in the past; I think I'll ask them what was done about food.

The starvation comment is the one that I get a kick out of most. Western kids have ZERO idea what actual starvation is like. I work for an organization that helps people in the developing world, and I can tell you that a kid who wants a hot dog at night and doesn't get it doesn't even COMPARE to poor children who barely see one meal a day. We really are filled with entitled 1st world problems on this site, LOL.
