Does anyone know if this is now running again? Are the Garitas still available? Thanks in advance.

The trolleys haven't run for several years and I suspect it's unlikely the service will ever be restored.

Last I heard the garitas are still running .

Hi Paul, interesting to learn something new.  I've visited San Juan several times, including twice in the last month, and have never heard of "garitas" as transportation (to me they are the iconic sentry boxes  🙂).  That said, we didn't see any golf carts running around the streets last month.  Doesn't mean they weren't there, but we didn't notice them if they were . . .

@DeniseAtBeach we did use Uber in San Juan. Easy and inexpensive.  Enjoy your cruise!

Judith...they don't run on a fixed route or a schedule so it's quite possible that you'll never see one even if you visit Old San Juan numerous times. I've never taken one and truthfully I can't remember if I've ever seen one.

If you happen to see an empty one you can flag it down and ask the driver to take you to your destination in Old San Juan.

Can someone explain what a garita is and how they work? Thanks!

It's a golf cart type of vehicle . They don't run on fixed routes or at set times but if you see an empty one you can ask the driver to take you anywhere within Old San Juan.

Is there a charge to use it?
