Drink tipping

Tipping the bartenders is just bribing, let’s call it what it is. If you tip $5 and get the same service as me the next time around who doesn’t tip $5 you’ll probably keep your $5, yes?

Sure but I bet that $5 gets you better service. My daughter bartends in Boston to pay her rent for grad school, I’ll have to ask but I’m guessing tipping gets her attention, she prefers $500 shifts.

Tipping done in advance is a bribe. Tipping done post service is gratitude. Tipping done between drinks is a bribatude. I fall in the bribatude category.

And, just like that, I’ve successfully resuscitated a thread that needed to be on it’s last breath. Sorry…couldn’t resist.🤣

Tipping is not an "investment". I get as good service with the mandated gratuity.

If you've not tipped above the mandatory gratuity, then how do you know you get as good a service?

Because I know that I get better service when I tip extra, I've experienced it.

We are tippers.  Sure sometimes it doesn't provide better service, but more often than not it does.  I know for a fact our tips gave us better service in some situations on the cruise.

As someone who worked for tips, it did make an impact my service to someone, but sometimes it just wasn't possible due to other circumstances. Or in some cases, they were just a-holes and their extra money wasn't worth the extra service.

100% agreed, most responders here are not tipping from the goodness of their heart they want something back in return.

100% disagree.  I can't speak for others, but I get good service regardless of tips.  I tip to say thanks, and nothing more.  I'll probably never see the person again.

We work in the hospitality industry, including working at resorts in the island. We know how it works.  Part is getting better service, tipping more than average is acknowledging we know the job can be hard.  The vacationing public can be jerks sometimes.  Their expectations are so high, they take out issues on the staff, even though it's sometimes out of their control.

We are among the tippers, over the course of a seven day cruise we may tip bartenders and servers an additional hundred dollars, but when we sat at a table our drinks were not far behind, when at the bar glasses were seldom empty. We have family in the service industry, and know how much this extra helps them.

I like to tip when a drink is brought straight to me in a lounge. If I'm playing Trivia, in the middle of the theater, or listening to music at a lounge...If I don't have to get up for a drink, that is nice service that deserves a tip in my opinion. But it's always an individual choice. No judgement from me on anyone's decision on tipping.

@Bruce Knight please tell me you don't go to the casino with your significant other!  Couldn't resist, this thread has gone way past helpful.

Actually I cruise with my mother once a year since my father passed away almost 10 years ago, and while I'm eternally grateful for the places I would have never ever gotten to myself late night cruise casinoing is where I blow off some steam from the ups and downs travelling with a parent instead of a significant other.....

More than one thing can be true simultaneously.

I believe NCL bartenders are overworked and underpaid. I enjoy tipping a dollar or two for a drink and I do it at every bar, not just my regular bar. It makes me feel good knowing that I have brought a small sliver of joy to them. It’s just like giving gifts at holiday time. The joy is in the giving.

At the same time, sure, I have noticed a smile of recognition when I approach, they remember my drink preferences and there might be a little extra pep in their step. But you know what else I have noticed? I often see that same smile and spirit for other customers who don’t seem to tip extra. For many of the hospitality staff, particularly the Filipinos, it is part of their culture to serve… they genuinely enjoy it and they are “people” people. That’s why they’ve been chosen for these positions. They know the deal; they participate in a tip pool that becomes part of their overall compensation and that guests are not expected to tip extra. They freely accept that.

So, tipping “extra” is really about the tipper, not the tippee. It may or may not have an effect on the service you receive subsequently (most people seem to think it does, but that could be confirmation bias at play).  If it makes you feel good and you can afford to do it… do it.

If you are on the free at sea package, and already prepaying beverage tips, does anyone still tip the wait staff and/or bar staff?  Asking because we have never done the beverage packages.

$2.00 bills 💸!

Order em at your bank 🏦 and let them magically make you a rockstar onboard!

Guaranteed to get your drink 🍹 on!
