Funny how that works.

Well, the worst thing that can happen to a bartender or server is get a complaint about bad service so, I do not think it is funny, I think they serve everyone equally well. I am with the other poster that has never seen cash tips at the bar, and I have sat at many, for long periods of time. To be quite honest, I rarely, if ever see any cash on the ship. First, I've never, and I mean ever, seen a passenger tip a bartender in cash. (So I can't imagine it's anywhere close to 30% of people, but I have no evidence to support this statement.) Servers carrying drinks? Yes, they get tips often. But never have I seen bartenders receiving cash. Secondly, if bartenders were tipped as often and generously as this thread suggests, the bartenders would be amongst the wealthiest people on the ship!!! We used to just give some extra tips at the end of our trips to those we felt deserving. I guess I have to up my game at the bars! I actually agree that less than 30% tip at the bars. I'm a tipper and, when I sail, I tip strategically at a few bars that I plan on visiting on a regular basis to be remembered and to show my appreciation. This has, as others have said here, gotten me some quicker service at the busier bars. Especially the pool bars. Now, going back to the 30% of people tipping. While I agree that probably less than 30% of passengers tip extra at the bar, I bet way more than 30% of the regulars on these forums tip and tip well. The vast majority of passengers never come to these forums and have no clue about so many things discussed on here. It's kind of humorous actually.

Twenty dollars should be sufficient. Why? In all my cruises I have never gotten anything but great service. Tipping is not an "investment". I get as good service with the mandated gratuity. In my opinion, the 20% tips automatically added to all drinks is sufficient tip, as is the cabin gratuity. Do you tip more than 20% anywhere else? When you get a 20% service charge in a restaurant, do you add another tip on top of that? If so, bully for you. I tip but do not tip excessively. Believe me, it's pretty easy to do. That said, no one really cares if others tip for drinks or not. I know I do not.

LOL My husband and I cash tip almost always, per drink if we are just buying a drink, or leave cash on the bar when we’re leaving. I believe NCL ships have bells at the pool bars so if you hear them ring, a cash tip has been received.

JMHO, but the service is better if one tips above the DSC. And, the $20 would be an investment since it would provide additional information as to whether service is greater. BTW, if done properly, you won't know if someone is tipping more than the DSC. It can be, should be, quite unobtrusive. My Country Club adds an automatic 15% added to the bill. I usually leave another $5 for a dinner, $3 for lunch. Neither my wife or I consider this excessive.

It astounds me that so many feel a need to comment because of my opinion that 20% is a sufficient tip. As I also said, of the many cruises we have been on, I have never seen anyone tip cash (stealthy or not) and I have always gotten excellent service. I stand by my comments and if you choose to disagree, so be it. LOL

LloydJr Posted March 21, 2023 #116 Share Posted March 21, 2023 I never tip to get better service. I just do it to say thanks to a nice person who does stuff for me. 😎 Since I generally sail steerage, I’ve got plenty of “extra” money!

complawyer Posted March 21, 2023 #123 Share Posted March 21, 2023 hey pete_coach. tipping or not has no impact whatsoever on being "a better man" no one is calling you out for not tipping, i think you crossed the line with your post attacking rocketman. you dont want to tip extra, "DON'T" no one else would really care (i sure don't) if i want to tip extra, that's on me. no one should care (or comment for that matter ) either. my cash for tips is like my american express card..... i dont leave home without it. what you choose to do is entirely up to you. by the way, it's entirely unnecessary to come back with some smart a** response. lets agree to disagree and leave it at that!! Bruce Knight Posted March 21, 2023 #124 Share Posted March 21, 2023 Can only speak for myself, but for a buck tip a drink in the casino those servers track me down and call me Mr. Brian while they hustle me another drink before I'm through with the one in my hand, all it takes is a little eye contact and they are back in a flash! Heck sometimes I have to take a break and get a water or sprite from them!
