Local excursions

We’ll be on Enchantment late June. Looking for excursions by locals, specifically in Sicily, Rome, FLR & Provence. We’re family of 5, three kids (18,17,14). Any suggestions? Thanks!

Is this your first time to the Med?

We do mostly DIY...but it could be overwhelming for those visiting for the first time.

DIY examples:

For Sicily, our stop was in Messina. After watching the "belltower" show in town...we took the train to Taormina. (Aprox. €11/p/roundtrip...plus a short bus or shuttle up the hiil from the train station to Taormina)

For Rome, we took the train from Civitavecchia...got off the San Pietro station (St. Peter's station)...then walked to St. Peter's Basilica, Castel D'Angelo, cross the Tiber River, to Piazza Navona, then Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, then took the subway to the Colosseum. (BIRG train ticket approx. €12/p/roundtrip...BIRG ticket also gives you access to the subways in Rome.)

For Florence, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is only one train stop from Livorno...Florence is a bit more difficult...almost 2 hours away.

If you're docking in La Spezia...visiting Cinque Terre is highly recommended.

* June is high peak tourist season...extremely crowded, long queues, and hot.

* You may want to visit the Europe/Italy boards for more details and information.

Thank you so much! Great ideas. I did go to Ports of Call boards, actually did not have as much good info as you just provided.

We used Romecabs for Rome, Florence and Naples in 2015. Four couples shared the cost.  Our itinerary had us in these ports for 12 hours, 8-8.  No problem getting back to the ship well ahead of time.
