Villefranche to Monaco

We had booked the Monaco HOHO Bus for our trip this summer and got an e-mail from RC today it has been cancelled.  We are concerned the Nice and Monaco excursion will not give us much time in Monaco and are considering doing it on our own.  Is it easy to get to the train station from the port? We are horrible with directions will we have issues trying to figure out which stop we need?

It's only a ten minute walk from the tender pier to the station.

Turn right off the pier & walk along the waterfront.

Because Monaco-bound trains are on the far side of the station, in 5 minutes- just past the Alma waterfront restaurant - go up the steps to the little lane at the back & continue in the same direction. Cross the train lines before walking down to the station.

Do you have to stamp train tix like you have to do in Italy?

Yes or you risk a fine. Look for the (usually) yellow machines on or close to the platforms.

Having said that, with the advent of e-tickets, I think  as paper tickets decrease in number, there may be future plans to stop them altogether.   Perhaps some day paper tickets will disappear completely, but for now I believe this is a transitional period.

If you have a paper ticket as opposed to an e-ticket, I would still stamp.

You could perhaps do some online research regarding e-tickets and the need (or not) to verfify them in some way, or if they are sold before payment.with the day and/or date of travel already indicated as that I do not know.

Any trouble getting a taxi back to the terminal at the end of your day?

Only slightly which was our fault. The taxi driver who brought us to Monaco gave us a card with his phone number on it and said to call 30 minutes before we were ready to return to the port.  Even though we have an international plan on our cell phones had trouble making the call. Luckily there was a tour group near us who were on a break so we asked the leader what we were doing wrong trying to call out and she made the call for us on her cell phone. We should have arranged a time and place for him to come back for us.

Is it advisable to purchase train tickets from Villefranche to Monaco in advance?

Probably. The ticket office is only staffed on Tuesdays 8h00 - 13h00 / 14h05 - 16h00.

There is a ticket machine, but there could be a queue/line to use it.

There is an app called SNCF Connect, which you can install. You can buy and display tickets on that. It's not the easiest thing to use, it will want to know the names and birth dates of all the travellers that tickets are being bought for. However at least if the language of the phone is English it should default to that rather than French.

Excellent.  Thank you.  I will use the app and pre purchase.
