Heads up if you are departing from Vancouver this weekend. Let's all hope this strike is averted.

Vancouver cruise ship terminal won't be affected, as it is not a cargo port.  Vancouver's cargo port is south of the city.  However, Victoria's Ogden Point may be under strike.....

Thank you! Just more proof I know nothing about Canada 🙂

lol...The cruise ship port is in downtown Vancouver.  Our container port is near our terminal for the provincial ferries that go to Victoria and the rest of Vancouver Island.    If you go to Alaska, you will more than likely see our ferries around the southern area of Vancouver Island.

That couldn't be further from the truth. All the commercial cargo/pax berths in Vancouver/Fraser River/Delta Port are part of Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

Canada Place is the only non-cargo berths remaining in Vancouver, as on the south side they have 2 container terminals - Centerm & Vanterm, and Cascadia, which is a bulk loading terminal by 2nd Narrows. On the north shore they have Lynnterm, Neptune Bulk, Van Wharves and a few others.

Vancouver also has 2 additional port facilities south of the city - Fraser/Surrey docks in the river and Delta Port by the ferry terminal.

Canada Place is a ILWU/MEA facility, so if the longshoremen are on strike it could also be affected, unless they are doing rotating strikes.

Vancouver has multiple containers terminals. In fact Centerm is right next to Canada Place.

Good point. Union members would not cross picket line set up by other striking union.

Apparently the strike would effect any stop in Victoria. Not sure that's an important port for cruises leaving from Vancouver, but my understanding is that a stop in Victoria is critical for ships leaving from Seattle to meet Jones Act requirements.

How many more reasons does our government need to permanently get rid of the PVSA?

The guys who man the lines to tie up the ship, are they part of that union??

Affirmative, at Canada Place, the Longshoremen handle the lines and also handle all the luggage and stores.

Even the BC Coast Pilots, who are not unionised, probably wouldn't cross a picket line. Since it is compulsory pilotage waters the ship can't sail without a pilot.

The Jones Act is applicable to cargo, for pax the applicable Act is the Passenger Vessel Service Act (PVSA)

An understanding has been reached between the ILWU and the employer that cruise ship operations will not be affected by any withdrawal of labour at the various cargo operations.

I heard that also about the line handlers, but what about the pilots.

There are no picket lines at the cruise port, so pilots have no reason not to do their job.

Picket lines have gone up at the cargo ports around Vancouver this morning, but talks between parties are ongoing.

Koningsdam got delayed due to strike which caused a revised itinerary. RCL just sent letter to guests telling them to be prepared for delays.
