Possible Cancellation

Due to some unexpected medical issues we may need to cancel our December 12th 2023 cruise. We have the Platinum up graded travel insurance. Would like to know what the best way to cancel, I know that we could cancel with FOR ANY REASON, but this medical condition could very well end our cruising day's. Would really like any advice from anyone who has canceled under these conditions. TYI

Unclear on what you are asking. I have never canceled a cruise, but I have filled out the paperwork for several people who have canceled vacations. If you have a medical reason that is covered, that is likely the best way to go as you will get most of your money back. If you cancel for any reason I believe you only get 75% back.

We have not cancelled under these conditions…

But, if you cancel for medical reasons, that should give you a refund instead of FCC’s.  That sounds like what you want.

If you use CFAR, then you get FCC’s.  At least, that’s what I’ve read on the PVP insurance on the website.

If I were in your position, I’d cancel for medical reasons and call my TA/CVP and ask them also.  I would cancel once I was very sure that I would not be able to go.

Did you book with a TA? If so, he/she would be the one to do the cancellation, you fill out the form for the insurance. If medical, you'll need documentation from your physician, I believe. We cancelled a cruise a couple months ago but as it wasn't for a medical reason, didn't read that part carefully, just got the FCC.

I recently cancelled a cruise as I broke my wrist.

My TA cancelled the cruise on her end.  I received the taxes back right away from Princess to my credit card. I then submitted the info from the hospital to AON (Princess's policy) and I received the rest reimbursed to me. There were a few options including a check, pay pal and one other one (checking account or debit card?). This was last month.

Sorry to hear you broke your wrist!

Did you get the insurance cost

back, because it was a medical claim?

You might remember that over 5 years ago I had to cancel for a covered medical reason days before flying to LHR for your Norway cruise. When canceling immediately received EZair and taxes/fees to my chargecard and filed my AON claim with a doctor’s diagnosis. Having the Platinum PVP insurance even if my reason was denied would have still received a 100% FCC. In less than a month had a check for all of the non-refundable costs.

I had to cancel last year when I got covid a couple weeks before the cruise.   I called Princess to cancel, and they gave me a phone number and a web site for filing the insurance claim.  I had the Princess Platinum vacation coverage.   I filed out the claim online, and I had to provide a copy of the cancelation notice from Princess which showed the amount of the penalty, which was the entire cruise fare due to the late cancelation. That's the amount I was claiming to be reimbursed by the insurance company.  I also had to provide documentation of a positive covid test taken at my local Walgreen's.    I received a check in the mail within a few weeks.  It was a simple process.  I had not booked with a TA, so I handled everything myself.  Taxes, port fees, and prepaid excursions were refunded to my credit card within a few days of my phone call to cancel the cruise.

A more complicated medical issue will require a form to be filled out by the attending physician, providing information on the diagnosis, the date of the diagnosis, and other pertinent information.

Thanks for sharing. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Im glad it all worked out relatively well.

COVID-19 was a little different because they DID NOT want you onboard to potentially spread your disease to others. For that reason and others, cancellation policies across all cruise lines were a lot more generous than before and after the pandemic.

Glad you have Platinum PVP (100% returned).  You will need to submit a claim directly to AON.

If you booked with a travel agent, TA will need to cancel your cruise.  Penalty phase will not apply.

There are two avenues:

1.  Cancel for Any Reason = FCC

2.  Cancel for Covered Medical Reason = Reimbursement

The following experience will be for Cancel for Medical.

*  You will receive some funds back from Princess via check or credit card.  I do not recall if it was taxes/port fees and/or penalty amount.

*  You will not receive the amount you paid for insurance (this is why you buy insurance).

*  You will be assigned a case number.

*  You will need to submit a report from your doctor.

*  You will be assigned an adjuster and will be able to submit papers via the web and/or as attachments with your adjuster.

https://aontravelclaim.com/#/home

Document everything and keep good records/copies.  AON will be in communications with Princess to verify any needed information.  Be patient, this may take several months.  AON will cut you a check.  They have just started to do direct deposits too.

The one time Princess cancelled a cruise (due to pandemic), I was automatically issued FCC.

Sorry for your medical issues.  You can file up to embarkation, but I wouldn't cut it that close.  I hope this will not be the end of your cruising days, but can understand why you don't want to risk getting FCCs.

Nope. Thankfully it was a last minute cruise and insurance was like $47 or something small like that.

I had 2 insurance policies with 2 different companies as I had a land trip and then a cruise. Both paid quickly. I have great respect for Allianz who got my home quickly and sent a medical escort with me. It was an interesting experience I hope to never experience again (though Allianz was amazing). Aon's policy was easy because all of my claims fell under Alllanz - the only thing I had to claim with Aon was cancellation of the trip. Allianz had to deal with hospital bills, hotel bills, food bills, taxi bills and then arrange for flight home.

Unfortunately I do remember. I am glad you ended up being fine!

I am glad in my situation it was just a coastal cruise and not a trip of a lifetime. I only added it because hotels in Vancouver were getting expensive and flying home was becoming difficult on the days I was looking at (holiday weekend).

Sorry to hear about your medical issues

Tips

Copy everything, including your medical note stating you can’t travel and the application for  reimbursement.  Make a folder on your computer or keep a folder with hard copies.  This also includes any emails.

Keep a diary  of anyone you talk with including name, date, time, company, brief description of call and anything important the representative tells you.

If you send anything by mail;  send it registered mail with tracking.

You won’t  get the insurance premium back as you are using the insurance to get reimbursement.

Pay attention to deadlines and don’t let them pass.  Move quickly.

Good luck.
