Even though I'm veggie,my OH isn't and he sometimes struggles as to what to choose,seems silly they put two veggie options on the main menu as there is a separate vegan/vegetarian menu which I'm always given,although after saying that,it's been the same menu for the last 4 years, off on the Christmas/New Year cruise and I know what I'll be having already 😂

May be off topic , however, I do have to smile at this thread.  I'm sitting here ( having just enjoyed a late traditional Sunday Roast) listening to the TV news ( on a certain channel) The topic this evenings  is, a well known branch of coffee shops and three London restaurants  'here in the UK'  have just had to 'reduce' their 'Vegan menu options',  apparently  the focus of meat & fish are  slowly back on their menu.  🤔

I don’t think they are alone. I seem to remember a company that produced meat substitutes gave up production entirely a few months ago. I must say though, if I were a vegan, I would want to eat actual food made from vegetables etc, not something pretending to be meat.

I can certainly relate to the feeling of wanting to tuck into a nice steak once in a while, though I'm not sure I've ever experienced it sustained for days on end! A veggie meal done right I find will leave no room for missing the meat element, it can be just as if not more satisfying, and tasty. Meat is simply an ingredient among many - unless you're specifically having a cut, its absence shouldn't diminish the dish overall. Cunard's ships certainly have the culinary chops to make some delightful animal free food, I don't see that ones lacking meat should be tucked away on a specialist order-in-advance menu. One of the nice things about a Cunard holiday for me is not having to think ahead about what to eat that evening, just sit, choose and enjoy!

Prior to our first voyage on P&O we had a brochure entitled: A guide to P & O silver or similar wording. I may still have it somewhere. When we boarded our first P&O ship in 1974 we were disappointed to see all the silver cutlery had been replaced with stainless steel.  

 

The Union-Castle Line had a large array of silver-plated cutlery.  Traditionally a fish knife was  paired with a fish fork. On our earlier voyages on the QE2 there was an impressive amount of cutlery - and silver service - even in Tourist Class.  On our recent QE cruise we did get fish knives and forks in QG with most, but not all, fish courses.

We were in PG on the QE for 14 nights and Aug/Sept of this year. There was no offer from the wait staff to order off menu and we did not see anyone near our table do so. However, we did mix up the menu a few times by selecting side items from different dishes to go with the main that we wanted. Hope that makes sense. Besides the nightly menu, there was also an extensive a la carte menu that changed weekly. Between the two the number of choices was quite extensive. Thanks for posting all these @Jack E Dawson - reminded me why I like PG so much.

 

But here’s something I have always wondered: are QG/PG breakfasts and lunches pretty much identical to Britannia?  My unofficial tests while on board QM2 (looking at the menus and/or lunching in Britannia), is that they are almost 1:1.  The real difference between the Grills and Britannia comes at dinnertime, and with the service levels.  Any thoughts?

I think the Grills breakfast menu has a few extra items: things like mixed seasonal berries and devilled kidneys.

We are looking forward to our upcoming PG trip on QV and think the above menus look fine. Maybe I have a faulty memory but on our first PG trip back in 2011 on QV I am sure we only got to see a much vaunted A La Carte menu on occasional days, as a special treat.  Things gradually changed on our biannual Canary cruises to a more liberal regime.  Perhaps we are now back to where we started?? Or even a little further forward than 2011. Cunard can not be blamed for seeking to differentiate product, when there is a substantial price difference? For myself, I have never seen the attraction of going off-menu. One of the joys of restaurant dining is being able to decide what to eat without having to plan in advance!

I believe the lunch menus are the same for both PG and Britannia, they certainly were the couple of times I checked

I think breakfast room service menus are the same throughout the ship too although as a QG cruiser, I add a brown sauce portion onto my crispy bacon order! 😄

Thanks— this does back up my suspicion.

 

One crossing in QG last year, due to special ordering for dinner the night before, we missed much beloved Chicken Kiev.  Solution?  We ordered Chicken Kiev for “breakfast” the next day and Osman was happy to oblige, even with a note of curiosity in his voice.  It seemed wonderfully decadent and pared nicely with black coffee.

I am fairly certain that pre lockdown, ordering off menu in PG was not the “norm”, and one enjoyed the fayre from the menu and flambé desserts and a few mains likewise.

Is not ordering “off menu” the preserve of QG anymore? If so it makes one wonder about the price difference,  but the QG suites so comfortable!

I have no idea what can/can't be ordered off menu in PG, but there will always be a difference between off menu PG and most things 'as long as the ingredients are on the ship and the chef knows the recipe' off menu QG dining.

@rakkor Question on your recent Oct voyage in PG via your always entertaining blogs. You mentioned that the PG balconies on Deck Four were large. Were you in an accessible PG cabin or just a regular PG room? Are all balconies large?
I see larger cabins, via another site, showing those larger cabins in Four Deck. I’m on Deck Five PG next midship next voyage.

The deck 4 balconies are larger for both PG and Britannia on both QE and QV, they extend a couple of feet further than the balconies above. The cabins are the same size as all other PG cabins and it wasn't an acessible one

Aft, forward and QG midships deck four cabins have a deeper balcony, part of it having no overhang from the deck above which means  in sunny climates and tif he ship's position is favourable to your area of the ship, you have the choice of sitting in the shade or in the sun.

The only draw back is those above  looking down have a bird's eye view if you are by the edge of the balcony, probably wishing they too had the choice of sun or shade!, I know I have envied that position a few times. 🙂

I would find much more of a drawback would be the closeness of the horizon. I like to see a nice long way.

I was looking for midship mainly and never noticed the subtle difference of balcony sizes.
