Lead Guest Canceling (3 people in cabin)

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hello, I did a cursory search using different phrases but couldn't find an answer to this question. Perhaps someone here knows. 🙂 Three people in cabin, lead guest on reservation has medical emergency and can't go. 100% penalty in effect. My question is, how does it affect the other 2 passengers? Thanks for any info on this topic!

I can't think of any significant way it would affect the other two, unless the lead guest booked under a casino offer, in which case Carnival has the right to charge them the "prevailing cruise fare" if higher than the casino rate.

Also if the lead guest had a higher VIFP status than the other two, they wouldn't be able to piggyback off the lead guest's benefits.

Are we to assume lead guest will no show or is he calling and cancelling for some reason.

If he cancels the other 2 can be refared.

@firefly333that's what I was thinking, guests 1 and 2 might be refared if she cancels vs no show. I am pretty sure she's not coming, she broke her wrist yesterday and is going to need surgery. I told her to wait a day or 2 before she decides for sure.

Thanks @DallasGuy75219 they are all first time Carnival cruisers. I know I've seen topics on no-show vs cancelation but I'm thinking it won't make any difference in this situation.

If they're in the 100% penalty phase, there's no reason to cancel and risk refaring the third at the double occupancy rate.  Better just to no-show; taxes and port fees will still get refunded for lead guest.

@DallasGuy75219 yes, I do think I read that somewhere. This late in the game, just no show. She does understand she is losing her fare. I'm curious about Cheers package and prepaid gratuities, wifi package, all that. Does she lose that too? Thanks!

Those should be refundable.  But if she knows she's not going (and still in the window to cancel online) I would cancel them online now vs. hoping they get canceled and refunded correctly when she no-shows.  I think prepaid gratuities will get refunded with fees and port taxes though, not when she cancels stuff she bought in the online planner.

Assuming all three in the cabin are adults, the "lead guest" cannot independently cancel their Cheers purchase, because all adults in same cabin are required to purchase.

The pre-paid grats will get auto-refunded.

The wifi package can get cancelled now.

I'm honestly not sure what Carnival does with Cheers pre-purchased for no-shows.  Anyone have any experience?  If they are not going to refund it, it would be cheaper to cancel for all, then purchase when you get on-board.

Once in 100 percent penalty and there is no insurance I would never ever call to cancel. Carnival is like a box of chocolates........you never know what you'll get!  All the excursions and cheers, port fees and gratuities will automatically be refunded.

Cheers will be refunded to the original form of payment. In 2019 I had a 4 person room with only three of us showing up. We had to buy cheers for all four so we could get the pre purchase discount, but after the cruise the money for my daughter who no showed was refunded.

If the lead guest is cancelling and has travel insurance, they need to contact the travel insurer for guidance about how to proceed.  In my experience, when I had to cancel a cruise for health reasons, my insurer wouldn’t pay unless I cancelled and provided proof that Carnival wasn’t refunding anything.  Then they paid the claim.  The cruise was then re-fared, with my roommate having to pay 100% solo supplement.  However, her travel insurance paid what was needed to make her whole.  If no travel insurance is involved, I agree with others who said to have the primary guest be a no-show.

Thanks all for your feedback! I am going to see her in a little while and I think (fingers crossed) that she is leaning towards going. She'll know more after her appt with the orthopedic surgeon. Sounds like no show is the way to go, if you don't have travel insurance and you're in the 100% penalty phase.

Going back to this:

What is the timeline, other than apparently they are inside the final payment date/full penalty timeframe?  (That's within two weeks of sail date, I believe?)

If the cruise isn't for a week after the pending surgery (maybe surgery in next few days), then why not go anyway?

If the surgery isn't until after the cruise, then (assuming it it immobilized properly) why not go on the cruise anyway?

I'd only cancel if the cruise directly interfered with the surgery date.  She is going to have a broken/healing wrist either way, may as well heal while on a relaxing cruise, with a Cheers package to help with the pain...

Sounds like you’ve not had a broken bone with surgery. The first week to two weeks is rough..She will need to keep it elevated more often than not—not easy flying or standing in lines. It will swell, requiring icing. She can go but it well be very uncomfortable and inconvenient. And she will be on painkillers which as everyone knows do not mix with alcohol. Hope her friends are willing to help her dress and go to the bathroom.

That’s a dose of reality.  I had hand surgery for a broken bone not too long ago, and no way would I have been able to cruise until at least a month after surgery.  Physical therapy might be involved also.

Another option maybe a name change?  Perhaps find someone else willing to go?  There is a fee for the name swap.

Being all new cruisers, so assume traveler #1 has no more pricing perks than the other 2, the price to switch names is a minimal investment vs refares, insurance claims, etc and creates less hassle.

W/o a name change assuming she decides not to go, No Show is a better option than canceling. Canceling (insurance or not) will result in a refare, No Showing will not.

@Buckett sorry to hear of her injury; hope surgery goes well and she heals quickly.
