Combining drink package types…

Recommended Posts

My husband doesn’t drink alcohol, but I do. Can I purchase the “alcohol” drink package and purchase him some other option? It’s really unfortunate when you have to purchase two alcohol packages because you’re in the same cabin but don’t necessarily drink the same way.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Nope, you will have to pay for both of you if you want it.

That said, Cheers! includes a LOT more than just the alcoholic drinks. Mocktails all around the ship, juice, soda, as well as specialty coffees and milkshakes from Java Blue all are included in that.

So long as he enjoys all that other stuff (nearly close to everything available on the ship!) it won't be a complete waste.

No exceptions* whatsoever, no matter what documentation you have and even if someone is pregnant, in recovery, or allergic to alcohol.  (Just about every situation has been asked about on here over time.)

* The only exception is that when one person has Drinks on Us Everywhere from the casino, the other person can buy Cheers because DOU Everywhere is essentially the same as Cheers.

Are you possibly sailing with others?  We have 4 adults going and 4 teenagers, so we just had to finagle the rooms around so that the "non drinkers" were booked with the teenagers even though they won't actually be sharing a room etc....

I'd think one would have to be a seriously heavy drinker to make it worthwhile to buy Cheers for 2 people when only one of them would be drinking. I would think for most people it would cost far less to pay for each drink.

Based on price from Mardi Gras a few weeks ago:

Drink package for 2 is ~$141/day -

~10 mixed drinks per day to break even (~$14/drink with gratuities)

~15 craft beers if bought individually to break even (~$9.55/beer with gratuities)

The only way around this (and it will still cost you some money) is to have your husband gamble a bit in the casino.  I get casino offers now with the best perk of having drinks on us in the casino.  I don't drink but because I already have a drink package, my husband is allowed to purchase CHEERS once on board without me having to spend the money.

That might work for the next cruise, but not on the current one.

And I would never gamble in hopes of getting perks later on.  It's never a guarantee.  There was a post in the last several months about a cruiser who dropped an amount in the high four figures on a short cruise and never got anything.

Really poor advice to gamble expecting comps. Carnival has no published schedule of comps.

The casino offer must include the Drinks on Us-Everywhere not just in the casino while playing. Also playing in the casino is just one requirement to get offers. Way, way cheaper to buy CHEERS

The full drink package is worth considering even if not drinking alcohol. The alchemy bar can whip up a great concoction with non-alcoholic spirits. The milkshakes and coffee are nice, and you can get an energy drink or virgin frozen drink any time.

Honestly, when not drinking alcohol you can consume a lot more... not just because there is no 15-drink limit, but mostly because your body won't stop working, :LOL!

A suggestion is going to Carnival.com, actually reading what Cheers includes, making a list of the drinks you will drink out of that list and then using the drink calculator to figure out if its worth it.  Cheers is so much more than just Alcoholic drinks and even non-alcoholic drinks can add up if thats all you drink.

I've been thinking about that as a non-alcohol drinker, but it's $60/day MORE than the soda/juice package.

I don't drink coffee. I don't drink hot tea. I don't drink energy drinks.

For me at least, an extra $60/day for some mocktails and milkshakes?

I can't drink $60 worth of mocktails and milkshakes on top of soda and juice in one day... unless of course 2 - 4 of those, (which I probably would/could drink on top of sodas/juices), comes out to $60/day at ala carte prices. 🤷

Cheers is really an alcohol package. It is really tough to make the math work for non-drinkers or light drinkers.

Generally when people ask to only buy one Cheers package, it's not because half of the couple doesn't drink - it's that they both want to share 15 drinks a day and save half of their money. I don't blame folks for wanting to save money, but that is exactly why Carnival doesn't allow this type of thing - they want all the revenue.

Thank you. That's what I thought, but @salty dingo seems to suggest otherwise... maybe if you drink coffee, energy drinks, mocktails, and milkshakes... then maybe he/she is referring to that... but for me, only adding mocktails and milkshakes... I don't think that I see the value.

I came back to say that I agree with you all, it was poor advice.  I gamble a bit because I enjoy it and I do get some decent perks with it from time to time.  I also want to thank you for not tearing a strip off me when I said this.  I have a TBI and sometimes the inappropriate answers come out.

I tried the Cheers because Carnival gave it to me for half price in a special fare. It was nice but I would not pay full price for it. I enjoyed it but there are way too many calories in those virgin frozen cocktails and milkshakes. Even without the alcohol!!!

When I get comped drinks, I drink Jack and Diet Pepsi. Zero calories 🙂

When I pay for drinks, I drink iced tea and splenda. Zero calories 🙂

I prefer to eat my calories.

Each to their own!

Pretty sure all "free" drinks have zero calories.

Except for the lemonade and juice cocktail anyway. I'm pretty sure iced tea and coffee have zero (or negligible) calories. And of course water has none.
