Rare Jack E Dawson Posted June 8 #1 Share Posted June 8 While exploring historic Southampton today, in anticipation of boarding the QM2 tomorrow, we stopped in to Saint Michael’s. A small but very beautiful church. Instead of kneelers, individual kneeling cushions are provided, each one beautifully and individually done in needlepoint. One in particular caught our eye. We are taking this as a good omen. 19

Rare NE John Posted June 8 #3 Share Posted June 8 I’ve had wonderful experiences in British places of worship: Evensong at Westminster, sung Eucharist at Bath, and just being in Winchester Cathedral and the underrated Southwark Cathedral. Maybe these cathedrals like the wow factor of the Italian/Spanish ones but they offer a different type of wow factor. Bon Voyage!

2Oldpeopleinlove Posted June 8 #5 Share Posted June 8 We’d get along well, Jack! Our habit is to fly over, rent a car, and do our cathedral and pub tours, one Evensong after another, one pint of bitters after another! We get to do that only every other time we can go since our son married and established a family in France, but it’s still our favorite trip. We sail home in the QM2, of course.

Rare Jack E Dawson Posted June 8 Author #7 Share Posted June 8 Of all the churches we visited today the most moving was HolyRood, the sailor’s church. Built in 1320 it was almost completely destroyed in a bombing raid in 1940. Fortunately, the city of Southampton has committed to preserve what remains. On one wall is a series of markers commemorating past sailors although some of the markers are fairly recent. In my entire life I don’t think I have ever seen a marker that denotes the deceased’s employer. However a number of the sailors markers at HolyRood referenced Cunard. Extraordinary.

Many thanks for that.

Rare babs135 Posted June 9 #11 Share Posted June 9 Captain Fasting would appear to have had quite an illustrious career. He was Master of the Caronia and Captain of the Queen Mary and the Elizabeth. The only photo I can find of him is the one below. He is 2nd left.

York Minster is not only a peaceful haven, its architectural beauty is awe inspiring; the very essence of a place of worship.

From a quick glance at the records, my great-grandfather (in my profile pic, in the galley of the original Caronia) sailed with him a few times, although my ggf had semi-retired by the time Fasting made it to the Queens.
