Carnival Legend - Rome

Recommended Posts

Hi…our ship arrives back into port at Civitivecchia at 6 am. We are in the process of booking flights home. What is the earliest we can get off the ship? We were looking for a return flight at 2 pm and wondering if we are cutting it too closely.

Lol I'm cruising and ending in rome. Idk about carnival but I booked more than 11 months out. Cant book flight thru the cruiseline or in general until about 11 months out.

I just finally booked a flight home just yesterday. About fell over what rcl wanted, and turns out if you dont book to one of the five usa hub cities prices are crazy. I finally decided to fly non refundable air Europa into miami. It's the one thing I booked nonrefundable. I'm going to stay a extra 4 nights and do some sight seeing. Excursions in rome have also been a eye opener. I'm paying for lite, only a carry on. I could upgrade and check a bag, about $54 more. I did pay $25 to choose aisle seats. Changing planes in madrid. The day I get in royal wanted $1090 to fly me home. Sticking around their cheapest fare to orlando was $1510 and no way I was paying over $1500 for a flight.

If you book ahead you cant book flights or have any idea how much they will be until approx 11 months before. I'm flying back memorial weekend here and a jubilee weekend in rome. Who knew? I was told expect about $800ish.. $1510 ..sorry omg. No.

I’ve been to Rome a number of times and never have done an excursion. Everything is really easy to get to if you stay down by the Piazza Navona area. You can walk to most things. Have a great time!

You'll have ample time to kill. Enjoy the cruise. I'm assuming you're doing the 10 day to Greece/Turkey. Epic. We did it in '22.

Good to know. I booked 2 today and feel at the end of my rope figuring them out. I booked a skip the line for the sistine chappel and it didnt say if it included admission. I asked the reply was I'll have your tickets for you no worries. I think ill have to get there by bus.

Maybe a waste of money booked the 3 things I can walk to anyway as a walking tour. Doesnt that mean I'm on my own walking anyway? Parthenon etc. So maybe if I have monday and tuesday nothing booked I can just walk around. I am booked quite central where I can walk to many things. The vatican stuff is too far to walk to though maybe ill leave first 2 days open or do a hop on hop off bus and get my bearings. I'm feeling quite confused what to book or not.

We were in Rome Oct & Nov '23 (2 diff cruises) so it was technically off-season, but the crowds were beyond ridiculous. Attractions such as Vatican, Sistine Chapel, Colosseum you can easily spend hours waiting to get in w/o skip the line tickets, so that's a wise investment.

Our hotel was 15 min walk from Termini - we used it as base for the HOHO and any buses we needed. Almost everything is walkable from a HOHO stop, including the Vatican.

We did self guided tour (downloaded on phone) for Pantheon, which was nice for the ability to spend extra time where we wanted and zip past when we wanted. I was glad we didn't pay for a guided tour there, but was very glad we had guides at other larger places.

The HOHO map was great to help us get bearings, route ourselves & plan our days and figure out when we needed a bus instead.

Spaces fill quickly, so I'd recommend booking tours for your must see places and slotting the rest into your open times.

You should pop over to that board to ask questions and pick up tips.

You will have a blast!!

Lol I dont know I have any must see places in rome. I wanted to see athens greece, so booked a 2nd leg on the same ship next may. I cant even say rome was close to being on my bucket list, let alone solo. People said to me you are already there, you should see rome before you fly home. My cousin just asked me why all this planning is on my shoulders. Hes never done a cruise. It's a TA plus a 2nd leg going thru greece ending in rome. I'm trying to explain to him if I want to see rome no one else is going to plan things.

I too was thinking hop on hop off bus though I booked a walking tour of pantheon tivoli and something else I can walk to easily from the hotel. I picked a hotel near them on purpose. I agree with him it's more planning than I wanted to take on. I just wanted to see greece.

I choose albergo santa chiara, 9.4 exceptional reviews. A know a lot on the hotel thread stay also stay at esmeraldo also walkable 9.2 on reviews. Refundable, ac airport transfer, breaakfast comfy beds on reviews. The area where the poster above stayed is closer to the trains and a few reviews said the neighborhood seems a little worse. I only have 2 tours last 2 days of my stay. 2 days to look around unless I change my mind and add something else. There are supposed to be lots of eating places near tivoli.

I sprung for this hotel to be within walking distance. Once and done for me I suspect. I've been taking care of parents for over 20 years and I got older lol during that time. If I were a couple or younger I could do those 7 hour tours and push more. When my parents were alive I used the excuse I didnt want to cruise far from home so I could get back faster. I also booked my first Panama transit next year, hitting both now that I dont have responsibilities for others. I'm no spring chicken. Choose close over lower prices. I'm already omg what this is turning into planning wise. Too complicated.

Vatican looks like 20 minutes or so walk. Sisteen chappel says 9 miles of exhibits. I think I just have tickets to get in, skip the line. The day before my flight, maybe not good planning. I said to myself give myself some time and Vatican closed Wednesday so Thursday. My sisteen chappel ticket is non refundable.  I didnt want to pay big dollars I'm already over 5k total. It just keeps adding up. I'll do a big escorted tour in athens. Idk where else. Some mountain they are talking about I need a excursion or climb one port. I picked this TA because it leaves out of PC 7 miles from the condo where I moved .. and then decided to fly home into miami. Bright rail train to orlando runs 24/7, maybe a hotel in miami then train next day. I'm going to be beat after a long flight. As I said costs keep adding up up up. And it's more complicated. If you end in rome you should stay and see it people said to me. You can see where my hotel is on this.

  • Pantheon 2 min walk
  • Piazza Navona 5 min walk
  • Trevi Fountain 9 min walk

Nice place and nice post.  Skip the line is DEF the way to go.  Rome can be a once and done place, depends on the person.  The Pantheon, how it was built and the interior (def not the exterior) amazes me.  Not sure if it came up already or not, but Santa Maria Majorie is def worth the visit.

I put the name into google and a tour came up for $65 says includes transfers. 3 hour tour at 9 am. Refundable. So worth $65? Ok I see now where it meets. Dont know where that is, but I'll google it or ask the hotel. The other 2 dont say I could find but this one says.

I'm doing a walking tour including the pantheon on Wednesday.. i really only care about the pantheon as imo i expect to have already walked to see tivoli and some other things possibly before Wednesday, I planned to walk to there and spanish steps and look for all those bistros where people said to eat.

Ok I'll bite. Sounds reasonable. The vatican sounds very difficult to figure out booking. Monday I'll walk around and eat. Small group of like minded lol. I dont know what like minded I am, but booked.

VAtican is a HUGE museum, literally miles of it.  There are other things, like the Catacombs, ST Peters, and of course the Sistine Chapel. All good.  Spanish steps are so so, Trevi Fountains good   Have not done San Giovanni in Laterno.

Trevi Fountain - cool walkable neighborhood w/great cafes, gelato and cappuccino. Almost impossible to get a picture w/o crowds (and this was end of Oct/beg Nov). We spent more time there than planned due to the great food and shops.

There's a Fountain to refill your water bottle in Trevi; we were there so long, we filled them twice.

I cannot get the picture of the front of the Pantheon to load, so this is all I can show you. It was awesome even on a cold, windy day.

You're welcome 😎

Flexibility and patience help in ensuring you have a great trip with the right kind of memories. Yes, there is some (a lot, lol) of planning involved due to the crowds and availability of tickets, but it is worth it.

Safe travels - enjoy your trip!

I still will have to learn to get around. Santa Maria Majorie tour that came up includes transfer which will save me hours of walking. Lol. To me that says I will have to find my way to that spot and at the end back to the hotel from st John's. St Peter's in between. Sisteen chappel also i have to meet at a meet up spot and exchange the voucher for tickets. Seems it cant be avoided, i will have to find my way around to do tours, so that seems like the next step. I'd hoped I could walk but now 2 tours are probably further to get to than walking. When you have never been it does seem complicated. I need a travel partner for stuff like this.

I have a walking tour on Wednesday I reread and it doesnt end until 6 pm. Parthenon, tivoli and ends at piazza navona which is quite close to my hotel. Says dont bring large purse, bags, or back pack and slow the group down at security. I hope my purse is ok, I'd rather keep money and stuff with me. 6 pm sounds kinda late, I hope it's not dark then. I do think rome is taking more planning than I anticipated. Saying you will be in rome anyway, you should see something of rome sounds easy but the tours do add complications. Buses? I really hope not to have to learn the buses and streets there, but seems it cant be avoided. Every step I take requires something else to learn or do.

Ending in miami, either get a hotel or tackle bright rail train to orlando airport at midnight. I was able to choose aisle seats on the flight to miami for $25. Gets in 11:07 pm. I didnt want a early morning flight. I'd get no sleep the night before in order to check in early for a international flight. Leaving mid morning. There would be no reason I decided to care if the hotel has a airport shuttle. By 11 pm, it would be shut down. Not sure it's a cost savings to fly into miami, but less money risked on a nonrefundable flight. I'm betting I'll be tired after that long flight, so now I have to decide about a hotel for the night or come on home. 10 or 20 years ago I'd have come on home. Being older I've slowed down. Bright rail is fast but travelling when I'm beat and carrying cash is a risk. We leave from PC. So easy until rome. Something to be said for cruises not land vacations iv decided. Rome seems a lot to tackle when I'm solo.

The place was packed! Is there ever a time that Fountain doesn't have a sea of people?

But yes, it does look better in person - it's beautiful.

When I there at the end of my Pride cruise last September, you couldn't get close enough to the fountain to toss coins in if you wanted to.  I have no idea if it is ever not mobbed.  Maybe 6:00 am on a January morning??

Looks empty in the first picture . . . but it isn't!
