First MSC cruise review: Great trip, food and service do suck, but with the $aving$, I want to go again

I love to have civil and friendly conversations with people that don’t align with my beliefs.  I personally think people in the United States in particular take things a bit too personally.  It’s nothing personal; I look at it as tolerance (both ways; for me and for others).  We can all “agree to disagree” and learn that ultimately we’re all human beings.  We can all get along even if we don’t agree with others’ opinions on politics and religion. It would be a very boring world if we all thought the same.  I still have hope! 😀

Sure, I love that too, but not on the first day of my cruise with a bunch of strangers. I have lots of friends and family who I can have civil political "debates" with. I can 100% guarantee that if I had said a word during that conversation, it would NOT have remained civil for long.

I hear you.  My family is very diverse so we don’t agree on much politically.  We avoid those conversations because we know some of those family members will get hostile if certain subjects are raised.  I avoid the conversations for their sake.  It’s true you never known what may trigger someone, especially a stranger.  You have your boundaries which is healthy.  I like to engage with strangers but it’s a risk I take for sure.

Here's the thing, I think there's some people who enjoy political debate, I have plenty of that in my family. I don't. A lot of of people don't. And I think if you're with new people, the polite thing to do is to try to include everyone in conversation, keep it light, and feel the group out. I think it's kinder and more polite to include eveyone.

I agree. Most that have a different view are all-inclusive/love all/etc until you disagree w/ their point of view.

Anyway, on this trip I had great interactions with everyone. I chatted with other guests about their excursions, the ship, the food, the sealife we saw, the docking procedure. It was a really friendly ship overall. I really enjoyed the other passengers. Both the people I met, and the general positive vibe onboard. It just seemed like people were really happy to be there and enjoying themselves.

Just got off my first MSC cruise! I asked a bunch of questions on this forum before my trip, and appreciate this community's help. I was on a 10 day sailing (7+3 B2B) out of Miami on the MSC Magnifica in a Bella experience. I really wanted to check out Ocean Cay, and I really needed to keep costs low on this trip, and on those measures, the trip was a huge success.

I know MSC gets a lot of hate, so I wanted to share my impressions with a friendlier audience 😊 I had issues with the service and the food, which made the trip a bit less pleasant, but not the extent that I would swear off MSC forever. I didn’t have a premium-line experience, but I also didn’t pay for a premium-line experience, so I had to adjust.

I’m looking at booking another cruise after this experience. The on-board experience didn’t blow me away, so I’d like to do a port-intensive trip, and plan some nice dining experiences on-shore. I’m focusing on newer ships because they look great, and because I heard a rumor that service is slightly better on the newer ships (particularly the US-focused Sea Class).

Things I loved

  • Ocean cay, ocean cay, ocean cay. Omg ocean cay. I love quiet calm beaches and spent most of my time at the spa beach, which had 5-20 on it at any give time. They play soothing spa music all day. I fell asleep. I read. I made friends. Just writing this makes me want to book another cruise that goes to ocean cay.
  • MSC upgraded me to balcony room. It was a nice, spacious room, and I spent a lot of time there to avoid chaos elsewhere on the ship. The buffet really did get too busy for me, but I just took my food back to my own private space. I think this was my biggest stateroom ever, and I could really spread out and enjoy the space.
  • I matched to Diamond status before the cruise and got a bunch of freebies as a result (specialty dining, thermal spa time). I ended up getting a good amount of free champagne out of the diamond status at two cocktail parties (one for diamonds, one for all status guests), as well as free bottle of champagne in my room.
  • The ship spent a lot of time in port, and I liked having no time pressure to get back. The ship generally docked between 7 and 9, and the earliest all-aboard time I remember is 5:30. It just made for a much more relaxing day, because I never really worried about getting back.
  • They have dance lessons multiple times day! I’ve never seen this mentioned in but it’s a fun activity I’ve seen less of on other cruises. On my sailing none of the dance lessons required a partner, which is a plus.
  • The energy of the production shows is great. I’m not really that into production shows, but I made sure I saw all of them. The dancers are amazing, and the cast does a great job of getting the audience involved.
  • There was a ton of space in the lounges and bars. I never saw an overcrowded lounge.
  • It was a great value for money. I looked back at my spending, and my princess Caribbean Cruise this spring cost more than 3x this one on MSC. Yeah, Princess is fancier, but I can’t do fancy on every trip. I thought the 3-night trip was a particularly good value. That one spends an entire long day in Key West, and even longer day in Ocean Cay, and there’s a production show every night.

The food and service definitely suck

  • Food – The food itself is fine. Some options are excellent (pizza, brie cheese, croissants, egg salad), most are just fine. The problem is limited hours and lack of flexibility. The buffet has a specific hours for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and if you miss those, your option is mainly pizza and burgers. A lot of the buffet stations were closed all of the time, which made not sense to me because the ship was full. Dinner seating in the MDR starts 6-6:15 or 8:30-8:45, and they won’t seat you later. The MDR itself has a lot of large tables, so both your dining partners and your dining time are assigned. I tried to move to my own table and got told off by a manager. I get that I booked Bella, but I figured it was worth a try. I wasn’t expecting to be scolded like a wayward child. The frustrating thing about the MDR is that there’s always available tables because not everybody shows up every night, but they have their seating chart and won’t budge. I gave up on the MDR after my scolding, and ended up consuming a lot of pizza and cheese and bread. I think there was decent food on board, but I just ate the best options available when I was hungry. I think if MSC just extended dining times in the buffet and MDR, they’d get fewer complaints about the food.
  • Service – Pretty lackluster. I don’t think that it’s “European” service and the staff aren’t smiling or chatting enough or checking in on how my meal is going. They get things wrong, aren’t accommodating, and some were be borderline rude. Like I mentioned, I matched to diamond and got some freebies out of the status, I had to go to guest services multiple times to actually get my diamond benefits because they didn’t show up on time, and I actually missed out on a few of the benefits because I wasn’t advocating for myself frequently enough. I called guest services a few times in the cruise with cabin issues, they were never addressed, so I learned to physically walk to guest services. When I asked basic question (what terminal are we in? when do the ocean cay trams start running?) staff didn’t know and didn’t go find out. No one of really went out of their way to be extra accommodating, to call someone, to figure something out, to understand what you really need and see if they could provide an alternate solution. That said, I chatted to another cruiser who said service was much better on a recent Sea-class ship voyage, so I’m hopeful the experience might be better on a newer ship…

What Diamond benefits did you miss out on? Many of them are handled by the Future Cruise department, not Guest Services, so depending what it was, they may have been more helpful.

Having been on both Mera and Magnifica, I will do my best to avoid Magnifica unless its almost free. I disliked almost everything especially as it compares to Mera, except for the gym which is actually larger and nicer.

Aurea area was sad (I bought a pass as I was Bella and went only once) in comparison to Mera. The buffet area has huge furniture which feels crowded and busy (this is a personal thing). The pizza was better on Mera. I understand there are general menu changes in the buffet to accommodate more "american" taste so I cannot say that food is generally better on Mera as I went on her before the changes took place. The cabin was the same and my cabin steward was much better on Magnifica, but imho that is hit or miss on any ship. MDR service on Magnifica was almost hostile, lol.I stopped going and I am generally not a fan of buffet for dinner.

 * champagne

* chocolate

* macarons

* milestone gift

* dancing lessons

* Free photo from the appreciation party.

So basically anything that had to be delivered to my room, and the dancing lessons. I was able to get half of my stuff after going to guest services twice, but not the macarons or the dancing lessons (which I'm really into). That said, I kinda expect this stuff to show up in my room. I don't expect to have to go to guest services multiple times to as for it. And for me, project managing my own experience is work, and I'm on a cruise so I won't work.

 I also heard from another passenger that the sea class ships are really nice, and that they had a better services experience on them. I suspect their might be more eyes watching what's going on on newer, splashier ships. My cruise friend said that the staff was really concerned about the post-cruise survey results on her sea-class voyage, and kept on reminding guest to fill it out. I didn't hear anything like that on the magnifica.

I'm considering the Mera, so I'm glad to hear to had a good experience. I just don't like the current Mera itineraries. The Bermuda ones don't fit in my schedule, and the Bahamas ones has effective one cool port (Ocean Cay, Port Canaveral and Nassau are very meh). I love Ocean Cay, but I don't think one day at Ocean Cay with a bunch of Sea Days and throwaway ports would satisfy me.

Ah, I see. So the issue wasn't that you were assigned to a sharing table, it was the specific table-mates. In my experience, MSC does try to seat solo travelers together, so it is unusual you were assigned to a table with two couples. Definitely bad luck!

Sadly, not the case on Divina last year (2 couples who ate slow also!); on Preziosa as well, but they were fine with me moving to a table with people I met.

@kad56 Thanks for your thoughts. 100% agree with you on food--pizza & egg salad were my go to's as well, lol!

Luckily, overall, I had generally excellent service on both ships last year. I was solo on Divina 12 days &  Preziosa 20 days, so got to know my bartenders & servers WELL. The only glitch was my 2nd room on the Preziosa had a loud mechanical humming that gave me migraines & getting a new room was a bit of an issue...got there, but I had to be escorted to pack & move. On Princess, they just gave us a new room key & said the old one would be deactivated when we let them know we got moved.

I tried MSC last year & wasn't thrilled...but the price was RIGHT.

Just got a 4 day comped cruise on the Seashore (they didn't even charge me taxes--odd), and had points for flight & hotel, so why not try ONE more time. Thought I was getting interior; pleasantly surprised they put me in a balcony.

We DO want to try Yacht Club & I have my eye on one with a great price...it's a ways out. So may book that onboard.

Things delivered to the room could have been missed by the cabin steward.  We got our free photo at the photo department.  They showed us our pictures and we picked one we liked the best.  On one cruise where we did not take any pictures, they simply delivered a group photo to our cabin.

+ 1000.

That's my feeling exactly. I've had a much better service experience on the premium lines, but I'm not doing to splash out for every trip. Sometimes I just want some time in the sun, and MSC provides that.

I hear you re the ports on Mera, and fully agree. I do not generally cruise for the ports (aside from the one time we were supposed to go to Cuba but someone decided to no longer allow it, but here we go with politics again 🙂 Anyway, the last time I was on Mera I didn't even bother getting off, to me a beach is a beach is a beach. I enjoy the emptiness of the ship when everyone is off doing their thing outside. This time I do plan on going off at Ocean Cay.

The Bamboo Pool on a port day is soooooo nice. Have one of those big hot tubs all to yourself!

Have not read through this entire thread, but realize it is referring to Magnifica, wanted to add a few comments as we just got off Magnifica this morning - we had a great cruise - the ship felt extremely comfortable to us, the service was exceptional, the food was fine, the shows offered a variety, entertainment was decent - we have no complaints.

You know, there was a couple of things. I was actually expecting to be grouped with other solo travellers (there were plenty on the sailing). I was assuming I'd make friends at the dinner table. I ended up with two couples, who were nice enough, but the men really dominated the conversation, and they group were really slow eaters, so when I did eat with them I ended up missing most of the early show. The folks were nice enough, but I didn't like them enough to spend 2 hours with the everyday and miss the entertainment. So then I tried to change my table, and I had a pretty unpleasant run in with one of the managers, so that really put me off. I really love the MDR, so that was dissapointing, but it was my trip and I really didn't want to run into this mean dude. I know I could have complained to guest services, but I'd rather focus on enjoying my balcony than spending my day escalating. I looked a some videos of a sea-class ship, and it looks like the have more small tables with like 2 inches in between. That's great for me. Probably my preffered set up. I get my own table, but I get to chat with the group next to me.

We will be heading out of NY on the Meraviglia on 8/4. I'm glad I saw your post so I can be prepared.   We aren't chatty people at all so the idea of sitting that close to people in the MDR or on the pool decks freaks me out.  Don't get me wrong, we aren't rude or anything, but I def. don't want to be forced to hang out with/talk to the same people every night considering I thought the waiters usually sat you at the same table each night?  We are Aurea so at least we can go up to the solarium to be more "away"  during pool time.

If you are Aurea, you can dine any time during the posted hours and you will not be seated with strangers.

How does aurea pricing compare to the other mass market cruise lines? The way I see it, I'm on MSC for the price to scratch my cruise itch.

@Bubsmoljo if I were sailing Bella again, I'd ask for a table changes as soon as I board. I didn't that on this sailing. I don't think it's guaranteed, but I think it's more likely if you check your table as soon as you get your key and request the change. I've also heard of Fantastica passengers being assigned to shared tables.

Please elaborate on Ocean Cay food as we are going there next cruise.

At Carnival's Half Moon Cay, there's a free BBQ.  The MSC notes on Ocean Cay mention several restaurants. Are they all free? Or only some?

The buffet and the food trucks on Ocean Cay are free and, if you have a drinks package, that will apply at the bars.

I have learned to never ever discuss politics with anyone. It just causes hard feelings and it changes your views on that person if you’ve never talked about their political views in the past.

Subject over for me.

Regarding MSC I am just struggling with pulling the trigger on a MSC cruise. I get pumped for it then read reviews and think if I have to wait 30 minutes for a drink while the bartenders staring at me like I’m doing him a favor by ordering a drink that won’t work. Food is subjective I get it. I just can’t understand how there can be that many things wrong with a cruise. If I had a problem with something not a trivial item but a lady wrote about the bedbugs. I’d take that up the ladder. Wouldn’t waste my time with someone that couldn’t help resolve the issue.

I know JamieLogical does fabulous reviews and think I’m on the same level as them as far as expectations go but just struggle.

We want to sail out of Port Canaveral. Want to try a cruise line other than Celebrity. It leaves MSC, Norwegian, Carnaval.

We could do a 3 day shorty and get a feel.

Anyway I guess time will tell. Thanks for listening….

I have never once had to wait 30 minutes for a drink on MSC except maybe when ordering a cocktail in the MDR. The MDRs on MSC aren't really set up to serve any alcohol besides wines, so it can take a long time to fetch a cocktail. I usually solve this problem by stopping by a bar on my way to dinner and bringing a cocktail in with me.
