We have stayed at Hotel Colon.  It was a great location, easy to get anywhere from here, but it is a very old hotel, and I couldn't save money using any of my chain-loyalty points.

We have stayed at several other hotels which I forgot and would not recommend, but the last time we stayed at the Kimpton Vividora, which is part of IHG.  Absolutely a great choice, almost feels like it's family run, great service, friendlys taff, great breakfast was included, great location just steps from La Rambla.  The rooms were a bit small, perhaps? but the main problem with Vividora was that taxis did not like driving into the complicated small streets so they would drop off or pick up about 3 blocks away.  The street was rather lonely at night, but never had a problem.

We love staying at the Hotel Colon. Always something happening in the plaza, the beautiful church across the street is worth visiting, and it is easy walking distance to everything.

Just got a great deal on The Mirror for €100 less than usual price on booking dot  - it is three blocks away from Passeig de Gracia and one away from Calle Enric Granados where there are fabulous restaurants.

Sounds worth looking into.

Appreciated these suggestions.  We stay overnight in Barcelona next June before boarding Onward.  Finally booked H10 Madison which looks very central and has a rooftop terrace for the obligatory pre cruise cocktail 🍹

Regards

We booked colon ( reluctantly ) 2 nights $1047 us $ refundable still stinging but reviews look great , any ideas for short jaunts by train?

Monserrat which is a Benedictine mountain monastery about 45 km north-west of Barcelona.  Takes about an hour by train.

We have stayed several times at hotel colon, love the location, hotel is nice with roof top bar and Views of the church. Highly recommend. We took high speed train to Girona and had a great day there exploring.

Is it easy to access once the train journey ends, roughly how close is it to the monastery. Is there anything else to do there?

TIA

It took us an hour and 45 minutes to get from our hotel to the monastery atop the mountain via metro, commuter rail, and cable car.  Up top there are several hiking trails, the monastery, and a couple of restaurants.  Lot of detail about our day in this blog:

Host Jazzbeau's blog gives you the detail you need.  His 1hour 45 is from his hotel. Yes it is easy to access after the train journey.  This link gives a good diagram of the logistics of travel.://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/tour/montserrat-spain.html.

It all depends on your interests. We'd been to Barcelona before and had already "done" Gaudi. The monastery offered something different. We didn't do the hiking trails.  I would suggest you go early...like all these sites, it gets very busy.

Thanks for asking the question that led me to revisit my blog!  I had forgotten how much we enjoyed that trip.  Have to look at MSC Yacht Club again...

And, the blog is excellent. Regards MSC YC, our first was 2018 and our most recent a couple of years ago. For what it's worth we feel it had declined in quality, whilst price has significantly increased to the extent we don't truly find real quality or value in it any more.

We have probably now had 6 cruises since our last MSC, looking elsewhere mainly, but certainly wouldn't rule it out for the right itinerary. That said, their itineraries lack imagination and it's the same old same old. Also, I perceive (perhaps wrongly) that the recently launched Explora ships is where the luxury focus now sits for MSC.
