i have the cutest white and most comfortable capri pants i would love to take on my canada cruise on the 9th through the 16th in sept to wear on casual days on the ship. they have neat zippers on the sides and look really sharp with a cute colored top and wedges. is it a forbidden no-no to wear white after labor day. i was hoping this fashion law had relaxed in the past few years.

will the fashion experts tell me what your thoughts are on wearing white after the labor day holiday. or should i just be a rebel and go for it ;) .

Labour Day in Canada is May 1st so that would mean no whites all summer. :D

Laura Bush wore white to the Inauguration ceremony in January 2005 and looked very classy...not out of place. I plan on wearing white in January when I go to the Caribbean. The no white rule is outdated.

No, Labour day is first Monday of September (this year, it's Sept. 4).

We have another Hollyday here in May (Victoria Day or Dollard Day) but it's at the end of May, I know nothing about a hollyday on May 1st.

Many people don't follow the rule about no white after Labor day but many still do, it's personnal choice now. When it's very hot, I do wear white capris even after labour day but most of the time, I skip white in September when it's a little bit chilly.

When is the timeline in the US not to wear white? Labor Day till when??

I am from Canada and I think if you want to wear white capris then wear them!

What part of Canada are you cruising to?

I would follow the temps that time of year. If it is hot out, yes wear them.

However if it is 65 degrees I would probably skip the white capris.

The Easter to Labor Day rule was typically for shoes, then others decided to spread it out. Technically, it is summer until around 9/23 I think. Good rule of thumb is if the weather is tropical, your clothing can be too.

That's what I've always been told. No white shoes after Labor Day and before Easter. I'm not a big white wearer because I'm clumsy and tend to stain easily. But I also know that off white or winter white is accepted.

I personally think it's absolutely fine, but if you feel uncomfortable, how about wearing a more fall colored top and accessories? (Think chocolate brown, burnt orange, etc.) Might be more seasonally appropriate than light pink, pastel blue, etc.

Have fun no matter what you wear!

White capri pants in mid September?

If they're winter white wool or a textured winter white gabardine, then yes.

If they're pure white cotton, no.

In Mississippi they're probably fine, in the north us the US or Canada, I think they'll look out of place.

uh, i beg to differ. Any Southern lady will tell you white is a major no-no after labor day and before Easter. Same goes with open toe shoes.

That's probably why I still abide by this rule, even though I'm in Hawaii and no one else does. I was born and raised in Georgia. I just KNOW my Grandmother would FLIP if she saw me in white after Labor day!

I think it depends on where you are traveling to and the fabric. White that is wool fabric looks a lot different in the fall than white cotton.

At least in Florida, the joke is you can always tell who the tourists are because they have white clothes on,and suntans, while the natives may be bundled up in sweaters and heavy jeans in January :)

I also have to beg to differ.I live in Florida and white is worn by everybody year around. It is an outdated fashion custom that is no longer valid. It is not a forbidden no-no to wear white after Labor Day.

thanks to everybody for your different opinions. they are of a heavier material and i was thinking about wearing them on the ship during my leasure time. i am going to take them and pair them with the fall colored top as suggested and feel really comfy.

i can see it is a matter of personal choice. :)

In my neighborhood (a Chicago suburb) growing up it was no white from Labor day to Memorial day (back then it was always May 30). Easter is a floating holiday and can occur anywhere from March 22 to April 25, dates that could include bitter cold and snow - so white clothes were definitely too summery.

The ban was on shoes and summery clothes including white skirts and pants.

Ok for Canadian Holidays.

May1st is not a legal holiday, it is called May Day as it is in other parts of the world and refers to the old communist and/or socialist labour party holiday. It is not "Canadian Labor Day.

Labor Day for Canada is the same day/time as in the USA. It first monday of September is Canada's offical Labor day.

Victoria Day for All of Canada except Quebec in the Province of Quebec it is Fete du Dollard (Dollard was a man who fought indians) is exactly the monday before the USA Memorial Day weekend, in other words, whatever monday your Memorial Day is on, our Victoria Day/Fete du Dollard will be the monday prior.

Wrong. This born and bred South Carolina girl wears white and open toed shoes after Labor Day.

Nashville has a colder climate than most of the south.

I'd certainly wear white on a hot day in Sept.--although probably not in October; but here in Nebr. we have a very relaxed, casual style of dress almost all year long and few fashion "rules". It would be different in a big city where many people dress for the office and are more latest-fashion-oriented. I'd skip the white capris in New York, for instance, but not on a fall cruise, if the weather warranted cool clothing.

I'll certainly defer to knowledge on that one about whites.

But open toe'd shoes? I've never heard that one before. That seems absurd to me.

When I go to Florida in the winter I bring sandals and don't feel out of place at all. It can be 80 degree's, I'm not about to wear closed toe shoes!

Agreed. NC born here, lived in NC, FLA, and now VA, and I wear white year round. Open toed shoes are in the stores year round. If they sell'em, then obviously someone is wearing them, including me.

We're leaving for a Bermuda cruise on Sunday and I'm not really a big fan of white anything but I bought an outfit this summer and haven't worn it yet so decided to take it on this trip...white pants and a deep tan/white jacket with a shirt that coordinates w/ the jacket. Tan sandals.

I'm planning on wearing it on Monday night (Labor Day)...so I guess if I take it off before midnight I'll be okay!!

I cruised to Canada in September 3 years ago (we left on Labor Day)and I did wear white capris but wore a black top and cardigan and black sandals. I didn't feel out of place at all...

Wow - Just have to jump in on this one, given that I am a Canadian who has lived in the mid-South (Nashville), the south (NC) and Florida. :D

There can be terrific Indian Summers in Canada, and it can be very warm during the day (80ish). You would certainly be okay to wear a white denim or heavier weight fabric, but I'd stay away from a lightweight cotton or rayon.

Here in south central Florida - we wear white all year round. The fabric weight may vary a bit, but white is still okay.

In Nashville I would not have worn white after Labour Day (note the "u" - that's the Canadian spelling), because it can be darned cold in September. I also didn't wear white in the fall or winter in NC because we had four full seasons.

If you love the capris, I'd say wear them. But be prepared to layer, because the weather can change pretty dramatically in the course of a day.

Bon Voyage!
