Wrong. This born and bred South Carolina girl wears white and open toed shoes after Labor Day.

Hi, I agree with BlueHerons. I am in Florida and it is still

in the 90s here:rolleyes:...the temps stay warm here throughout Sept

and Oct. There have been times over the years THANKSGIVING

was still in the 80s...

As for open toed shoes..I am wearing sandals every day to

work...whether it is pretty colored one or a neutral flat

White Mountain slide.

Living in Florida, I wear white year round, and would also wear it on any tropic isle, or on any Caribbean cruise ship. Fashion edits are becoming less important to me, and hopefully to others!

Hi babakookie..cute screen name by the way:)

I am in Florida too and I have more sandals in the closet

than any other type of shoe. As for white, I guess we

are lucky;) it stays warm so long here the color goes

almost all year round for us:D (almost) LOL

I probably wouldn't wear white slacks in Dec/ January/Feb

(our coldest months here in Jax) but other than that...

once Spring comes...and it can warm up here in March..LOL

I was also born and raised in the deep south (Texas). I guess I do follow the "rule" in a way, but it has nothing to do with Labor Day. I change when the weather changes, which can be much, much later in the year. Once the weather becomes crisp, I just change over to fall colors and closed shoes without really thinking about it. Wearing white, at that point, just doesn't seem "right" somehow. Silly, really, but I do it. :o

Here in SE Florida people wear white way after Labor Day. It is basically a resort and boating area so white, as well as, flip flops are always in fashion. Of course if it would be one of the colder days like 60 degrees which are rare I doubt too many of us would be in white shorts or capris. Probably pastels or khakis.

Came to see if there was a thread about White After labor Day...and of course there is!!! I grew up here in MA, and the rule was no white shoes, pocketbook, pants, skirts and the like from Labor Day to Memorial Day. I have actually not had much whit in my wardrobe as having worked in health care so many years it reminded me of uniform pants! I did buy some white capris this year and enjoyed wearing them. Just today they came out of the wash and I debated if they go in the "take on Oct Cruise" pile of "pack away pile".

Cruise is to Caribbean Oct 20th....

I am thinking white is all year in the Caribbean but having a bit of a mental block. Maybe I will just go with more neutrals....it is not like I don't have enough clothes to bring:D

I am hoping to gradually pare down the summer clothes in the closet and drawers the next few weeks to help limit what I pack this time....brought WAY too much on Sept cruise last year!

I always go to Fla for Thanksgiving to see my Mom and of course, take my sandals! As you say, it's often in the 80's.

People are on the beach sunning and swimming - saying it's too late for sandals or whites is ridiculous.

Here in the north the rule makes sense. We've had 3 days of dreary, chilly rainy weather. Fall was definitely in the air.

Today in gorgeous. Bright, sunny and warm with a slight breeze. I spent all day downtown, had lunch near Union Square and walked home the 1.5 miles in my usual summer mid heeled sandals. However, summer white - in terms of shoes, pants and bags - has suddenly vanished and would look out of place.

May1st ... is called May Day as it is in other parts of the world and refers to the old communist and/or socialist labour party holiday.

I have to slightly correct you on this one. May Day, i.e. May 1st, is Labor Day in most parts of the world. It has been a national holiday all over Europe, not just in communist or socialist countries, for over 100 years. The date was chosen in reference to May 1st, 1886, when over 400,000 US union workers went on strike for a 8-hour work day. May Day is a big day for labor unions in Europe, with many people joining demonstrations and festivities organized by the unions.

About wearing white after Labor Day, I always thought that that rule is way to arbitrary. Why shouldn't I wear my summer clothes, including whites, whenever the weather is like it? So, my opinion is to go for it.

today it is very warm (80's) so I am still wearing my white capris & loving it! when the weather gets chillier, they will be packed away and unfortunately, that will be when the 'fall clothes' gets dragged out (sob!)

I live in a city east of Vancouver BC, where the cruise ships will be leaving this month and doing their repositioning cruises down to CA.

Thank you, I guess I don't remember my lessons so well from way back.

But here it is not a legal holiday. Maybe in Europe but none the less not a legal holiday in Canada, Canada celebrates the legal labor day holiday on the first monday of September.

But I do appreciate the lesson as I am always interested in history.:) thank you for takeing the time to write.

This is why I felt it was a "socialist/communit holiday"

In 1904 the International Socialist Conference meeting in Amsterdam called on "all Social-Democratic Party organizations and trade unions of all countries to demonstrate energetically on May First for the legal establishment of the 8-hour day, for the class demands of the proletariat, and for universal peace." As the most effective way of demonstrating was by strking, the congress made it "mandatory upon the proletarian organizations of all countries to stop work on May First, wherever it is possible without injury to the workers."

My white capris and slacks will be "packed away" tomorrow! I, quite frankly, am tired of them. I can't wait to put on the "fall" colors.......and yes, they'll get paired with the khaki, beige, bone capris and slacks............and later the browns. It's Fall........well, almost! I'm quite "done" with those pink and lime colors too and I'm thinking I'd rather be wearing the peach, orange, bronze, golden stuff than look like an easter-egg in September!

Here here, although I'll be with black, and kahki, my whites got packed away last week. I'm ready for fall colors

Good for you, as long as you are comfortable. However, this born in LA, raised in AL, schooled in MS and making a living in TN girl will follow the fashion guideline, as old and outdated as it may be. (perhaps i am old and outdated :o ). I agree with others that say its become a personal preference, as well as region/climate preference. I dont judge others that choose to do whatever they want, I just will follow the rule/guideline/personal preference (whatever you want to call it). You can wear what you want, I will wear what I want and we can agree we disagree. :D

I also looked up the open-toed shoe rule and dont find a hard and fast rule. must be a 'handed down' one. My feet tend to get cold so maybe i made this one up. I did see no white shoes after summer, but nothing about open-toed shoes. hmm...oh well, the saying 'teaching old dog new tricks' comes to mind...but i am sure i wont change on this one either.

With all this said, i have a cruise to the Caribbean in a couple of weeks, and this weekend when i was changing out all my spring/summer clothes for my fall/winter clothes and did put quite a few summer things in the 'to pack' pile. So i guess i am of the 'when in rome' mentality. that or a hypocrite...

Well, my white pants & skirts and all my linen was packed away yesterday:p I live in NC and will continue to wear sleeveless (with shirts or cardigans over top as needed layers) and sandals for a while, because after all it's still 90 today, but no white pants or linen. That's just me. I was raised in CT- my mom's rule growing up was no white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. That date switched to Easter when I moved to the south--presumably because of weather differences. Call me old-fashioned if you must (not old, I'm only 33, just old-fashioned:rolleyes: ) I would not wear white capris on a cruise in Canada in the autumn....

I love reading threads like this. I had never heard of the no white after labour day rule until I moved to the USA!

I guess back in my home country of England it is not really an issue due to our cooler and damper climate!

I find it all fascinating, but I will definitely be wearing some white on my Caribbean cruise this December :D

Did anyone see the Today show this morning (9/5)? An editor from Glamour Magazine said white can be worn year around as long as the fabric content was appropriate for the season. This according to the new issue, "Fashion Do's & Dont's".

i for one am really glad that the old rule is out of date. there are so many things out there that are white and so cute. now i know i will be in style when i wear my comfy white capris and a cute top with it. ;)

I can remember growing up with the no white after labor day and before memorial day. However, I noticed on "What Not to Wear" (which my daughter and I LOVE!), that they say white can now be worn after labor day. Fashion rules change over time (obviously or we'd still be in corsets ). It's ok that this one can change too. It's not the end of the world. ;)

One thing that is important that isn't being discussed is fabric & style of what you're wearing....Those things being more important than color alone to determine "appropriateness".

I still won't wear white pants or skirts, even wool, but that's just because I don't tend to like the color on me:p

uh, i beg to differ. Any Southern lady will tell you white is a major no-no after labor day and before Easter. Same goes with open toe shoes.

Well, I am a southern gal and I have to differ here also....it is still 90 degrees outside and I wear white and open toed shoes until the weather dictates otherwise.....I don't know what the temps are like in Canada around this time of year so I don't know if I'd bring capris...but I'm cruising to the Caribbean in a few weeks and I'm bringing white with me there.

I say whatever is comfortable and is weather appropriate...

Well of course. It's ALWAYS been about the fabric - not the color. Look in the stores in the dead of winter. White is everywhere. I LOVE my winter whites.
