advocado Posted December 5, 2007 #1 Share Posted December 5, 2007 For those of you who enjoy receiving the Mariner tiles, here's a partial reply I just received from the Mariner Society regarding same: "Please be sure to attend the Mariner brunch in order to pick up your tiles. They will not be left in your staterooms. Have a great cruise. Mariner Society"

RuthC Posted December 5, 2007 #6 Share Posted December 5, 2007 I don't like the idea that I have to go to the brunch to get my well-earned tile. I might want to sleep (very) late that day, or had a late breakfast, or have something else I want to do. Maybe I just don't want to go to the brunch. There should be a disconnect between showing up for the brunch and receiving the tile.
waiting2retire Posted December 5, 2007 #7 Share Posted December 5, 2007 Maybe this is something new?? On the Nov 10 Noordam sailing, I plain forgot about the Mariner brunch (must have had too many things to do that day) and my very first :) tile was waiting on my bed that night. Love it.. the Statue of Liberty, depicting the New York departure port, I assume. Bonnie

I don't think I want to go to the brunch--I just don't like things like that--but I really don't like the idea of being compelled to go. I guess there's no such thing as a free tile. Deb C. Posted December 5, 2007 #9 Share Posted December 5, 2007 I received my pin and tile in the cabin. Did not attend the function. I was on the Veendam last month---the tile was of the Statendam.

Ruth-- The event is preceeded by a reception in the Explorer's Lounge @ 11.30, where they serve Wine, Champagne, hot hors d'oervres... ...and the Good Nuts. ;) (Pins were distributed in the staterooms prior to the event) After photographs and presentations, everyone is then escorted to their places in the Dining Room (No breakfast food was served, so it was really a Luncheon) which were designated by placecards on the tables and the tiles. IMO, it was a very nice event and a nice way to receive ones tiles.
Jen&Joe Posted December 5, 2007 #11 Share Posted December 5, 2007 Interesting. Last month we got our tiles on the Veendam and the Westerdam in our room (neither for the ship we were actually on).

ldog Posted December 5, 2007 #13 Share Posted December 5, 2007 We were on the Volendam in October. No tiles at lunch. We received one tile in our stateroom before the lunch. There was always a lineup at the front desk so I didn't ask on board. After I came home I wrote an email to HAL and they say they are mailing me another tile and our red pins. Mariners over 100 days had a separate reception and then joined us in the main dining room partway through. I'm not sure I'd go again. Missed a culinary demo which was more interesting. They were pretty chintzy with the wine. One full glass and then mere splashes instead of refills. Food was good... quiche or salmon or steak. RevNeal Posted December 5, 2007 #14 Share Posted December 5, 2007 (No breakfast food was served, so it was really a Luncheon) Actually, there WAS a breakfast item on the menue ... a quiche. I don't think any of us ate it.
Susie51 Posted December 5, 2007 #15 Share Posted December 5, 2007 I had the quiche on Zuiderdam in Nov. It was good. Most of the people at our table had the salmon. The tiles were at each place setting.

pms4104 Posted December 5, 2007 #18 Share Posted December 5, 2007 If I read the previous posts correctly, sounds like HAL is trying a couple of different things to see what flies well with the Mariners.
jtl513 Posted December 5, 2007 #19 Share Posted December 5, 2007 It continues to amaze me how inconsistent HAL is from ship to ship or week to week in so many ways!:eek: After I came home I wrote an email to HAL and they say they are mailing me another tile ... Others have reported on this forum that the tiles mailed out by the Mariner Society are not the regular "series" tiles, but just some generic, plain things. Don't get your hopes too high. :(
Aunty Pat Posted December 5, 2007 #20 Share Posted December 5, 2007 On the Oosterdam Thanksgiving cruise I received a note in my cabin saying there were so many (800+) Mariners on board that they ran out of tiles and would be sending my tile to my home. The brunch was a nice change, but the invitation was delivered the morning of the brunch so I didn’t see it until I was headed out my door at 10:30 AM to go up to the Lido. RuthC Posted December 6, 2007 #23 Share Posted December 6, 2007 What is a tile? I'll be on my second HAL cruise in a week and a half...do I get one? Do I want one? You should get one; whether or not you want one is entirely up to you. A tile is about a 4" X 4" "delft" tile with either a Dutch or HAL theme (depending on what's given out on your cruise). There's a link in a recent thread (please don't ask me to find it) to pictures of the series. They are a nice memento.
