DaveOKC Posted June 7, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 7, 2008 How far is it to the cruise ships from Hyatt Place Hotel in Fort Lauderdale (10th Street)? Is it close enough to walk to the afternoon/evening before our departure (we will be getiing in early and would like to see the ships)? Can you get close to the ships or will security stop you? DaveOKC It is close enough to walk to, if you are fit, but the port is so huge, that you might not make it very far. For a while, the security guards were asking for cruise tickets before they let you into the port, but now they just ask for ID and direct you to wherever you say you are going. The terminals are very large, though, so your view of the ships may be quite obstructed. On some days you can see ships from the 17th Street bridge. It's also nice to watch the ships go out from the beach, starting at around 5PM, mostly on Saturdays and Sundays. You can get there by bus or SunTrolley from your hotel. Trannynanny Posted June 8, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 8, 2008 Mii, My DH and I stayed at the Hyatt in May. There is a restaurant out the side door, to the right and then a left (brings you to a large shopping center) called Gator's. It's like a sports bar/restaurant. Typical bar food and the like. Pretty good food. Has an outdoor bar area also with music the night we were there (on a Saturday night). There are also other restaurants in this same shopping center, also within walking distance, but didn't have a chance to go any of the others. They all looked good! Have fun! We had been to Ft. lauderdale but back in 2006 and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and I knew what was around there so now I know that it is really close to that area. Again thanks. marilyn

Rare Lois R Posted June 8, 2008 #10 Share Posted June 8, 2008 To the OP, the Port is not really "Pedestrian Friendly". The ships are quite a ways in and dragging your luggage through the area isn't a great option. And yes, Security is tight as well. Some hotels offer complimentary shuttles to the ship and with the amount of hotel choices a cab is probably only about 10 bucks. I would not walk to the ship myself. DaveOKC Posted June 8, 2008 Author #11 Share Posted June 8, 2008 Lois - thanks for the input. We were not planning on taking our luggage, just going the afternoon before to sightsee. We do this in San Diego and it is interesting, but it sounds like Port Everglades is a different story. Thanks DaveOKC

I have sailed from San Diego as well and they are a totally different set up. Port Everglades is not a "Sightseeing" type of Port. I like the San Diego Pier too!:D
monicajay Posted June 8, 2008 #13 Share Posted June 8, 2008 If you just want to 'sightsee', you get a fine view of the port on the south side of the 17th street bridge.
DaveOKC Posted June 8, 2008 Author #14 Share Posted June 8, 2008 Thanks for all the great input. After reviewing it, our plan is to try to catch the ships leaving port around 5-6 PM on Saturday in Feb. Considering we are staying at Hyatt Place, where would you recommend we go that is easy to get to? The 17th Street Bridge, Fort Lauderdale beaches (where exactly) using the Sun Trolley or somewhere else??? THANKS! DaveOKC

royalcruz Posted June 8, 2008 #16 Share Posted June 8, 2008 Hi Dave, just remember, at 6:00pm in February its already dark outside:eek: Your best bet would be to get wherever you are going by 5PM, as it will start to get dark soon after. The 17th St. Causeway bridge will be the closest view. If you want to watch from the beach, know that it is a more long-distance view, but it is still really fun, and you can always bring binoculars. You will be less than a half mile from the port. The beach we go to is 8 miles north of the port, and we can still see the ships! We like to watch from the beach and say "that will be us soon"! Just head east on 17th St. and the road will curve to the left after the bridge and become A!A. As soon as you can see beachfront on your right, you will be in a great spot. If you check one of the major cruise travel agent websites, you can see how many ships will be leaving on your date.

BlueHerons Posted June 9, 2008 #18 Share Posted June 9, 2008 I don't think I'd walk down 17th Street in the dark because it is such a busy thoroughfare. In addition to Bequia's excellent list, I'd like to add Southport Raw Bar and Bistro Mezzaluna.
