How far is it to the cruise ships from Hyatt Place Hotel in Fort Lauderdale (10th Street)? Is it close enough to walk to the afternoon/evening before our departure (we will be getiing in early and would like to see the ships)?

Can you get close to the ships or will security stop you?

It is close enough to walk to, if you are fit, but the port is so huge, that you might not make it very far. For a while, the security guards were asking for cruise tickets before they let you into the port, but now they just ask for ID and direct you to wherever you say you are going. The terminals are very large, though, so your view of the ships may be quite obstructed. On some days you can see ships from the 17th Street bridge.

It's also nice to watch the ships go out from the beach, starting at around 5PM, mostly on Saturdays and Sundays. You can get there by bus or SunTrolley from your hotel.

Mii,

My DH and I stayed at the Hyatt in May. There is a restaurant out the side door, to the right and then a left (brings you to a large shopping center) called Gator's. It's like a sports bar/restaurant. Typical bar food and the like. Pretty good food. Has an outdoor bar area also with music the night we were there (on a Saturday night). There are also other restaurants in this same shopping center, also within walking distance, but didn't have a chance to go any of the others. They all looked good!

Have fun!

Thank you two for restaurant list. We had been to Ft. lauderdale but back in 2006 and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and I knew what was around there so now I know that it is really close to that area.

Again thanks.

This should help you out:

Here's a list of the SE 17th Street area Shops & Restaurants...

Pazzo’s Cucina Italiano (formerly Tara Steak & Lobster) is right next door to Extended Stay America... [/url]

Carlos and Pepe's (Mexican) & Dirty Harry's (bar with food) are in the same shopping center as Pazzo’s. There's also a small diner in that strip mall that I've been told has an excellent breakfast.

Einstein’s Bagels, Coldstone Creamery, Starbucks, Tokyo Sushi and Giorgio’s Pizza are across the street from Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America

Bimini Boatyard and Bravo (great Italian restaurant) and an BonJour French Bakery across the street from Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America, and about a block east, opposite the Renaissance Hotel

Budget Car Rental is in the same plaza (Quay Plaza) as Bravo and Bimini Boatyard Restaurants.

Jack Jackson's new restaurant FISH is diagonally across the street from the Renaissance hotel, attached to the Convention Center complex at the entrance to Port Everglades... http://www.fish-fl.com/

Chuck's Steakhouse... and Waxy O’Connor’s are both across the street from Embassy Suites, a long block west of Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America

Outback Steakhouse is just west of Embassy Suites next to Hyatt Place, and Quarterdeck is across the street and a block north of Embassy Suites on Cordova Road, just beyond Winn-Dixie...

Kelly's Landing is a great New England style seafood place in a strip mall on Cordova Road, across the street from Winn-Dixie, next to Crown Liquors.

There are 3 large strip malls around Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America - More or less across the street, next door, and behind, as well as several smaller ones. There are at least a dozen other small restaurants scattered throughout those strip malls, plus a number of fast food and carry-out places in the area as well... You'll never go hungry along that section of SE 17th Street, there's something for every taste and budget.

Publix grocery store is in the Harbor Shops strip mall a block south on Cordova Road, behind Embassy Suites. Publix sell beer & wine as well as being very large, very nice grocery stores.

For liquor, beer and wine…Total Wine and More http://www.totalwine.com/ is located next to Publix. This store is to booze what Home Depot is to lumber, it’s huge!!!

For snorkel gear, fins, masks, clothing or any outdoor gear is available at Boaters World, next to Total Wine…http://www.boatersworld.com/

A few of the dining establishments within the Harbor Shops ….

Carvel Ice Cream

Angelo’s Pizza and Pasta

Barnie's Coffee & Tea... http://www.barniescoffee.com/

The Original Steakhouse & Sports Theater… http://www.originalsteakhouse.net/,

CoCo Asian Bistro & Bar…, http://www.cocoasianbistro.com/

Crown Wine and Spirits is across the street from Embassy Suites, behind the Texaco station, and 67 Wine & Spirits is across the street from Crown.

Winn-Dixie grocery store is across from Crown, and there's a CVS drug store in the same strip mall as 67 Wine & Spirits.

Walgreens drug store is a block east of Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America, across the street from the Renaissance hotel.

The restaurants above are just those that you can easily walk to. If you take the Water Taxi you can easily get to dozens more.

The nearest Water Taxi stop is 2 long blocks east, under the SE 17th Street Bridge, in front of the Ft Lauderdale Grande Hotel... http://www.watertaxi.com/FortLauderdale/FLLHome.Asp

To the OP, the Port is not really "Pedestrian Friendly". The

ships are quite a ways in and dragging your luggage through

the area isn't a great option.

And yes, Security is tight as well. Some hotels offer

complimentary shuttles to the ship and with the amount

of hotel choices a cab is probably only about 10 bucks.

I would not walk to the ship myself.

Lois - thanks for the input. We were not planning on taking our luggage, just going the afternoon before to sightsee. We do this in San Diego and it is interesting, but it sounds like Port Everglades is a different story.

Thanks

Hi Dave,:) oh, you meant to sightsee through the port?

I have sailed from San Diego as well and they are a totally

different set up. Port Everglades is not a "Sightseeing"

type of Port.

I like the San Diego Pier too!:D

Thanks for all the great input. After reviewing it, our plan is to try to catch the ships leaving port around 5-6 PM on Saturday in Feb. Considering we are staying at Hyatt Place, where would you recommend we go that is easy to get to? The 17th Street Bridge, Fort Lauderdale beaches (where exactly) using the Sun Trolley or somewhere else???

THANKS!

Hi Dave, just remember, at 6:00pm in February its already dark

outside:eek:

Your best bet would be to get wherever you are going by 5PM, as it will start to get dark soon after. The 17th St. Causeway bridge will be the closest view.

If you want to watch from the beach, know that it is a more long-distance view, but it is still really fun, and you can always bring binoculars. You will be less than a half mile from the port. The beach we go to is 8 miles north of the port, and we can still see the ships! We like to watch from the beach and say "that will be us soon"! Just head east on 17th St. and the road will curve to the left after the bridge and become A!A. As soon as you can see beachfront on your right, you will be in a great spot.

If you check one of the major cruise travel agent websites, you can see how many ships will be leaving on your date.
