liz000 Posted September 17, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 17, 2008 When you go on a cruise there always seems to be one or two moments where you think to yourself "this is it, this is what its all about". So what is yours? I have two. The first is when I am on my balcony maybe the second night when the chaos and excitement has died down a little and I look out over the water at night and watch the gentle waves go by and the surf makes that awesome noise when the ship makes its wake. It is so peaceful and begs for reflection. The second is the first moment I realize the ship has left the dock and we are officially underway. Its a great feeling! thatlauragirl Posted September 17, 2008 #2 Share Posted September 17, 2008 After boarding, I always call my mom and dad from the top deck to let them know we made it safely and are on our way. They're always thrilled to hear from us and it's the first chance I have to take a breath and start relaxing... after I call them, I know vacation has just begun. I can practically feel the stress melt away.:)
obnurse Posted September 17, 2008 #3 Share Posted September 17, 2008 When we actually board the ship I feel like shouting to the world! It's an exhilarating time for me!
cb at sea Posted September 17, 2008 #4 Share Posted September 17, 2008 Really, I think it's the 1st day (boarding day), when you still have the entire trip ahead of you! Once that ship pulls away from the dock, the countdown to finishing the cruise begins. That always sucks!
Margienj Posted September 17, 2008 #5 Share Posted September 17, 2008 The minute we get on Welcome Aboard Photo taken I know the trip has begun. No phones, no bills (mailed ones) no hassles. Just us the sea and fun, fun, fun. Only 178 days to go for that feeling again.

kayden Posted September 17, 2008 #7 Share Posted September 17, 2008 Waving bye to people watching from land as we leave port. It's such an awesome feeling. A close second would be standing at the back of the ship on a clear evening with a moon present just watching the ship sail through the darkness (or during the day is pretty nice too). pris993 Posted September 17, 2008 #8 Share Posted September 17, 2008 I think about specific cruises and memories like: cruising between North Africa and Spain out of the Mediterranean at night and seeing the lights on the two coast on either side; cruising the Greek islands, oh how peaceful and beautiful; leaving Istanbul on the largest ship aflot, it was bigger than any building in port; being greeted by a band, playing American music in the port of St. Petersburg; watching flying fish, dolfins and wales; with these and many more memories I feel blessed. :)
English_in_Spain Posted September 17, 2008 #9 Share Posted September 17, 2008 The moment boat safety drill finishes and the life-jackets have been returned to the cabin. That, to me, is the moment the cruise begins.

grannynurse Posted September 17, 2008 #13 Share Posted September 17, 2008 Hearing the ship's whistle as we're leaving port at the first sailaway and calling the family so they can hear it too. One of the best but eeriest experience was listening to the fog horn blow every three minutes all the way from Boston to Greenland: thinking we're really at sea, and in the graveyard of the Atlantic..... okgirl Posted September 17, 2008 #16 Share Posted September 17, 2008 I think I have 3 favs......... 1. Stepping onto the ship for the 1st time and getting "dinged" in :p 2. Heading straight up to the aft Lido bar, making friends with the bartender and showing him how I like my double spicey bloody mary's (2 limes please no celery) 3. Head down to the Casino, set up my players bank and introduce myself to the casino bartenders. :)
Scooter-n-GB Posted September 17, 2008 #17 Share Posted September 17, 2008 Not to sound like a broken record, but the moment you walk across the "gap" and into the outer door of the ship. You know you have arrived! Followed very closely by: Opening the balcony door for the first time Sail away Walking up to the tip of the bow on the promenade deck (Grand and Crown class Princess ships). First drink in hand first sound of the ocean at 2 in the morning, as you walk out to your balcony. For me, there is just something about the sound and the smell, minus the view of the ocean. It's like a deeper connection with the earth. :)
carolv712 Posted September 17, 2008 #18 Share Posted September 17, 2008 Standing on the deck or helicopter pad as the ship pulls out and watching the dolphins escort us out to sea. I love seeing them swim across the bow of the ship as the sun starts to set. AHH....
Texas_Diver Posted September 17, 2008 #19 Share Posted September 17, 2008 1. Walking into the ship on the first day 2. Seeing blue water upon arrival at our first Caribbean port 3. The muster drill...We have a photo from each drill. I don't particularly like to be pressed up-close-and-personal with lots of other people BUT it does mean that our cruise is underway. 4. Entering the dining room on formal nights...I love being dressed up. D.
CowPrincess Posted September 17, 2008 #20 Share Posted September 17, 2008 Feeling the little "nudge" as the ship leaves the dock, so we know we are actually cruising now :) And laying on the bed, feeling the oh-so-gentle rocking movement of the boat for the first time. THAT is heaven on earth.
ab0si Posted September 17, 2008 #21 Share Posted September 17, 2008 Being forced to use the anti-bacterial gel when getting on the ship. This is done to control viral infections, I am told. I then know I have left reality completely and am about to spend a couple of weeks in fantasy land. Granted, I can get the same feeling by listening to certain politicians but cruises cost less than said politicians.
sail7seas Posted September 17, 2008 #22 Share Posted September 17, 2008 For me, it is when I cross the gangway. Each time we board for our cruise, I always say to myself........ Enjoy it to the max. None of us knows the future and it could be our last. When we board, I anticipate the whole cruise ahead of us to enjoy.
Bettyboop66 Posted September 17, 2008 #23 Share Posted September 17, 2008 My favorite moment is that wonderful first drink we get at the pool bar. But a very close second was on my first cruise with Princess in 2001, we were leaving from Vancouver and they played the theme from "Love Boat". I still smile thinking about it......and please don't be mad at me but the song will be in your head the rest of the day.

Administrators Rare CC Help Michell Posted September 17, 2008 Administrators #25 Share Posted September 17, 2008 My favorite moment on cruises is after we're onboard, and have that first foo-foo drink in hand. Something about THAT moment creates instant relaxation for me. It can take me 2-3 days to unwind on land vacations, but cruises give me an instant disconnect from my every day. :)
