SabreSailor Posted October 28, 2008 Author #26 Share Posted October 28, 2008 Mariner's Awards handed out at the luncheon? We saw none of that at ours on the Zuiderdam a few weeks ago. Cruise Director Johnny Quinn just got up and gave his typical ex-DJ blurb about how valuable Mariners are and we ate - no awards, no recognition. Is this atypical? We got our pins in the mailbox outside our cabin door. Actually got them twice, once on each segment of the cruise. Terri

Cruise Director Johnny Quinn just got up and gave his typical ex-DJ blurb about how valuable Mariners are and we ate - no awards, no recognition. Is this atypical? Many (most ?) of the ships have an invitation reception in Explorer's Lounge just prior to the luncheon for those who have medallions and those who are receiving one. The Captain, Hotel Manager, CD and other Officers attend and cocktails are offered, Captain gives a nice talk and medallions are presented. Those Mariners are then escorted to the dining room for the luncheon. Some Mariners do not like this system. They much prefer that all Mariners can see those getting their medallions and have wished it was done in some way in the dining room. But, others who say it was done in the dining room on their cruise, said most people could not see or hear anything. Beats me what the answer for the best way to do it is. Roboat Posted October 28, 2008 #29 Share Posted October 28, 2008 A little off track, but how do you prove you are a Mariner if required? I have a Mariner ID number, but I don't recall getting a card or medallion. I may have received them and promptly lost them. Is a medallon like a lapel pin, or an Olympic Medal? Do people actually wear them? I don't want to have to drill a hole in the ceramic coaster and wear it on a chain.
carosave Posted October 28, 2008 #30 Share Posted October 28, 2008 my dd is just five..and lucky her, has about 65 days on HAL..by 6, she will be up about 85. We joke that maybe she will end up in the thousands by 21...(we hope...cause it means we were with her!) We do try to explain that she is lucky...although, in her preschool class last year, even though she had been to Greece, everyone else in the class had been to SeaWorld...and she hasn't! She thought she needed to go...!

I keep track of my days, and when there's a space to fill in with that number, I do. I know it was verified on the HAL website. There's no membership card in the Mariners Society. Lapel pins are given for 25, 50, 100, 300, 500, and 700 days sailed. Medallions are given for the same milestones, starting at the 100-day mark. Yes, we do wear them, but only to the Mariners Party/luncheon. They're too heavy to wear more than that! Why dowagers would have a hump! :D Drilling a hole in the tile would destroy the tile! Don't do it!

They will give you your Mariner's number and tell you how many days you have. The Award Program is: 25 days - Blue pin 50 days - Red Pin 100 days - Copper medallion and pin 300 days - Silver medallion and pin 500 days - Gold medallion and pin 700 days - Platinum medallion and pin

kalliekae Posted October 28, 2008 #35 Share Posted October 28, 2008 That is NOT easy to pull off. :D Those excellent concierges know who belongs there just about immediately. ;) They keep checking their computers to see embarkation photos of suite guests so they know our faces and names the first time we enter the Lounge. We are always greeted with Hello, Mr. and Mrs. ******** as are all other Suite guests, particularly on an "S" Class ship where there aren't that many of us. Plus, your key has to be activated to open the door to the NL and only the Concierge can do that. ;)
Sea King Posted October 28, 2008 #36 Share Posted October 28, 2008 W Shouldn't they at least make it look like it's a privilege to be a Mariner by checking the invitations as you enter the dining room? why argue with being able to attend an event that features "libation" on the house:confused: especially since you are now official Mariners:eek: welcome to the Society:D

sail7seas Posted October 28, 2008 #41 Share Posted October 28, 2008 Just us, I suppose, but we like the pins. Because we went past red and blue pins under the 'old' Mariners Program before they gave pins at those levels, we got to Medallions without every getting the pins. I asked for one each for us a while ago and we like to pin them on our Medallion Ribbons along with ship Inaugural Pins. I think the pins are a nice size and, of course, have my favorite logo. :)

Juanita462 Posted October 28, 2008 #43 Share Posted October 28, 2008 It is not true that all medallion holders get invited to a pre-lunch cocktail party. we have been to two mariner luncheons but were not invited to any such party and we have a copper medallion and are well on our way to the silver. We have walked by and seen the party going on but the only medallions I saw were silver so perhaps they have raised the bar for who gets invited. Doing away with the traditional medallion presentations diminishes their importance in my opinion. Everyone has to eat lunch anyway so they are not giving anything special to mariners. sail7seas Posted October 28, 2008 #44 Share Posted October 28, 2008 It may (probably) depends upon how many Copper Medallion holders (awardees) there are on a given cruise. We've seen upwards of 100 and, when added to other medal holders and awardees, that would make for more people in Explorer's Lounge than they can accomodate. The cut off number I imagine depends upon 'head count'. I think the luncheon is very nice but agree that I want to see new awardees get their Medallions and I also like seeing the 'group photos' with those holding those Medallions having their picture taken with Captain and Hotel Manager. I always enjoy seeing people get their awards!

SJSULIBRARIAN Posted October 28, 2008 #46 Share Posted October 28, 2008 Somewhat off the subject but why does HAL send those big Mariner buttons with the documents? Maybe they could send them to first time HAL cruisers only and save money by not sending them to those who have cruised with HAL before. Just curious. Barbara I thought they only send those big buttons to new Mariners (those going on their second cruise). I wouldn't know as I have only gotten e-docs for my last few cruises. JimVrhovac Posted October 28, 2008 #48 Share Posted October 28, 2008 On the Eurodam cruise there were 43 people getting their bronze medallions so everything was done in the showroom and then we moved to rembrabt dining room for lunch. Seats were reserved by table. Ruth & Jim

They didn't seem to appreciate the passage at the time, we could hardly get them out of the pool - but now they love looking through the album we made for that trip and have very fond memories. :)
