Celebrity has banned inside smoking on ALL ships???

I have seen it referenced in other recent postings. I am all for it. I do not even venture near the casino since it usually reeks with rancid smoke. I have been in the bars such as the schooner where I love to listen to the piano player and left because of the smoke. Between my sinus problems and my contact lenses I have to wear, the smoke really bothers me. I would love to go into the english pub on the voyager class ships to listen to the performer, but due to the smoke, I cannot.

Many states and cities have banned smoking in public areas including restaurants and bars. Unfortunately only restaurants are smoke free here. I confine my bar visits to restaurants with bars since they cannot smoke unless it is a totally separate room with separate ventilation system.

RCL needs to follow suit and ban smoking inside the ship. Advantages to the non-smoking rule are less cleaning required and less danger of fire.

Agree with the reasons for banning the smoking...and feel for you on why you avoid the smoke, same reasons here.

Of course the fire safety issue is going to be a valid issue solved only if both crew and pax have to stop smoking inside...if crew can still smoke inside its possible someone there could be the cause of a inside space fire.

Seems like most of the big problems on cruise ship involving safety in the past number of years were fire and ice or other submerged itemd related, hitting ice or submerged ground objects or onboard fires. The Fire risk can be really negated quite a bit with no smoking inside...hitting ice is just a danger of going to the furthest South Continent. Hitting submerged ground...well that just shouldn't happen with charts and depth measuring equipment available these days.

Those of us that are really health impacted by smoking will be better off health wise and will have less worry about onboard fires. I'm for outside only smoking...and personally would rather it not be on a balcony anywhere near my balcony...

Oh well the debate will linger on.

I just saw on the Celebrity boards that effective immeditely Celebrity has banned ALL inside smoking, even in the Casinos....I am very surprised this has not been mentioned here, as RCCL might follow....Any thoughts?

They haven't followed suit yet on banning smoking on balconies, which Celebrity did earlier this year. So until I see RCI begin following Celebrity's lead for stateroom/balcony smoking restrictions, I don't think you're going to see any changes in other areas of their ships.

Although I would love to see it. I too am someone who is strongly impacted by second-hand smoke. (I've recently learned they are a likely trigger for severe migraines.)

Another poster on the Celebrity board quoted this from a press release (Bold type and colour added by me for emphasis :

"Effective with the start of our next sailing for each of the ships in the fleet, we will be making a minor adjustment to our Smoking Policy implemented in October 2008.

Smoking will no longer be permitted in any of our ships’ casinos. Smoking will continue to be allowed in the observation lounges on each ship as previously communicated. Exterior designated areas will remain the same as previously indicated, with the exception of the Solstice Class where Smoking on the Pool and Sun Deck will moved to the Starboard side to improve our guests’ dining experience at the Mast Grill.

For each of the vessels, the Hotel Director, at his discretion, will designate either Port/Starboard and Forward/Aft of the Promenade deck as another exterior (covered) smoking venue."

So this sounds to me as though there will still be limited smoking areas indoors, yes?

As a non-smoker, I look forward to being able to spend a bit more time in the casino, but I don't begrudge smokers someplace to smoke indoors.

This is from the celebrity website under news

For all Celebrity ships, smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom or on any stateroom veranda. Cigarette smoking will only be permitted in designated indoor and outdoor areas of the ship, while cigar and pipe smoking will only be permitted in designated outdoor areas. Smoking will not be permitted in any dining venue, casino, theater, hallway, elevator or corridor. Violations to this smoking policy will result in a $250 cleaning fee being charged to the guest's onboard account and may also be addressed through Celebrity Cruises' Guest Conduct Policy. Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. A guest must be at least 18 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco onboard.

Additionally, there is a non-smoking policy on all components of the land tour portion of all Celebrity Cruises cruisetour products. We appreciate your understanding and adherence.

So what´s new besides the casino:confused:

And why should RCI follow, they cater to a different clientel and have different smoking policies for quite a while now.

It´s all just another wishfull thinking thread from the all has to be non-smoking people.

BTW non-smoker here that never in his life touched a cigarette and doesn´t like smoke, but can certainly live with people smoking and even share ship space with smokers:eek:

Just as well we cancelled our January cruise on X! What really really maddens me, is that they take folks money, and change the rules when they feel like it. In UK, even deposits are non refundable. I get so angry for people who board not knowing the new ever changing policies. I have a feeling though the reason the casino has been included in the ban, is the fact that recently, all the smokers were heading there, not to use the casino as such, just to have a smoke as its a LONG way from dining room etc to nearest smoking area. I do know of recent, the casinos have been getting used as the place for smoking...

I dont care what rules they apply, as long as they do it in their marketing both brochures and website, AND before going to print. Then one can CHOOSE how to spend one's hard earned cash. Its the "immediate effect" thing that makes me so so angry! We book way in advance for work reasons, and meet from all over the world with various flights etc invloved. It takes so much planning, and we lost out a great deal when we transferred our bookings from X to RCCI. (as many did!)

RCCL seem to have the right balance. Far more non smoking than smoking areas, but smokers are happy with the minimum bars etc. Celebrity..pushing their luck on this one:rolleyes:

Big ships to fill and on our cruises, it was most definately the smokers/late night casino party people who were spending the big bucks!

Half of our party are non smokers, and yet not one of our lot raise an issue with the smoking situation..

I also think one cannot compare a non smoking land situation to an "at sea" situation. Here in Scotland, we either A), dont go to the pubs anymore (thats why thousands have closed, jobs are lost etc etc etc), or B), go to those which have heated outdoor patio areas (but suffer the never ending rain and absolutely DONT go in winter!). But when we are in a land based non smoking situation, it takes only seconds to pop out for a cigarette, not half an hour! In countries where there is a warm climate I dont think its an issue at all. At sea, I certainly dont want to have to go from deck 4 aft to deck 12 forward (M-Class Celebrity ship) to have a cigarette. The casino was within a few minutes stroll of the dining room so was an easy option for smokers to pop to, THIS I would say is why they have widened the ban. The casino now must be so smokey even smokers prob cant stand it:eek:

No matter what though, I think its awful the way celebrity are not up front about their policies crystal clear at booking time.

This new policy may simply be a sign of the economic times.....just a thought.....

1) Non-smokers outnumber smokers

2) Many non-smokers avoid indoor areas where smoking is permitted (casinos, certain bars, etc).

Smokers and non-smokers alike cruise on some sort of budget, with only a limited amount of money to spend for "extras". By making all indoor areas non-smoking, that opens them up to a larger potential clientele and a broader range of cruisers who will spend their budgeted funds in those places, rather than in the ports.

Non-smoking policies are certainly OK with me (asthma, contacts), but it will keep friends from cruising with us, if RCI implements them.

Actually, I saw the same post, and it was effective Oct 8, 2008, almost a month and a half ago. Someone bumped up the post. It isnt a new policy "effective immediately".

I also saw a price of $229? Or something really low on Celebrity Century and said to myself wow, I need to start booking Celebrity at these prices. It was only a 5 day, but I could have booked a balcony for $449.

I am not a smoker, and I would love to see RCI make all indoor places smoke free. Have one side of the ship, on open air decks, allow smoking. Smokers do have the right to smoke, but I just think the areas to do that should be limited. I don't have any allergies to smoke like some do, but I still don't enjoy going to places that are heavy with smoke so we usually avoid them (some bars and casinos especially).

And I think they should make all balconies smoke free. Many people who smoke don't do so in their homes, they go outside (my DD and her DH both smoke but never inside their home) and I think a lot of factories/businesses where people work only allow smoking outdoors too so on the ship it shouldn't be that inconvenient for smokers to have to go to an outdoor deck to smoke. Thankfully we haven't encountered much of a problem with smokers on the balcony. I've occasionally caught a whiff of smoke, but nothing to get upset about. But I do understand those folks who have paid for a balcony, and want to enjoy it but can't because of chain-smokers, or cigar smokers, on either side of them.

I tried asking this question on the other heated thread and did not get an answer. I'll try here.

I pay close attention to smoking rules on many cruise lines. Right now-only have 3 cruises under my belt. Enjoyed RC from the first and are happy with them. Being a smoker-I currently do not mind the limitations put on us. Once balconies are non-smoking and the casino [actually I just like the slots] I would look for another line.

Now-being Celebrity is part of RC-Am I correct that if loyal royals that just hate smoke would gravitate to Celebrity now-don't they keep their G, P, D, and D+ status and keep all those 'frequent flyer perks'!!?

When someone says this:

What a fabulous thing. I would love to see Royal do the same

Because Celebrity is a part of the Royal Family-Am I thinking correctly that Royal is trying to answer the non-smokers prayers and now does not allow smoking on balconies and casino's?? So-in a round about way-Royal did it already-or am I missing something here.?

I checked the Celebrity site. Seem to have great itineraries, stateroom prices seem around the same-have a kids club. What's the big difference?

Even though a Royal C&A Diamond cruiser gets the highest Captain's Club status on Celebrity, the perks on Celebrity are not as good, in my opinion. Celebrity does not have the Concierge Lounge perk and the balcony discounts that a Diamond cruiser would get on Royal.
