Oceania smoking policy

We are thinking of upping the service level on our 2010 cruises and contemplating Oceania due to some really interesting itineraries. Can someone please tell me the current smoking policies? Also, do you know if they change a policy, are you able to cancel with full refund? We want to be able to smoke cigars and cigarettes on our balcony and at least in one lounge on the ship. Can anyone advise what they know. I have a email out to Oceania right now asking them this also. Thanks.

If I understand correctly there is no indoor smoking anywhere on the O ships.

Smoking on the balconies is not allowed. There is only one spot to smoke pipes and cigars and that is on the pool deck level, forward, on the starboard side.

Being a cigar smoker myself I prefer the dedicated indoor "smokers only" areas like the humidor area on Silversea where if someone walks in the door they are going to have the expectation that there will be smoke in there.

With completely segregated areas for smokers then the non-smokers should have nothing to complain about.

At any rate the smoking policy on Oceania may not be what you are looking for. I am willing to go to the one outside area for cigar smokers because I feel that the other things Oceania offers such as itinerary & food more than offset the minor inconvenience of only having one small outdoor smoking area.

You may want to look at another cruise line for smoking

From O website

What is the smoking policy of Oceania Cruises?

For the safety and security of all guests and staff onboard, Designated Smoking Areas are available on Deck 9, the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck, and Deck 10, in the aft, port corner of Horizons. These areas are comfortably furnished and conveniently located near food and beverage areas.

Smoking is expressly forbidden in all Staterooms and Suites, on verandas, or in any areas of the ship other than officially Designated Smoking Areas. Smoking in a stateroom or suite or on a veranda represents a serious fire and safety hazard to all guests and staff. Guests choosing to disregard this policy will be disembarked at the next port of call and may also be subject to additional fees that will be imposed to cover the costs associated with any damage to and the required cleaning of furnishings, verandas and surrounding deck and accommodation areas.

All areas other than those specified as Designated Smoking Areas will remain smoke-free. This includes all guest suites and staterooms, verandas, restaurants, public areas, the Casino and all other areas of the ship. Cigar and Pipe smoking is only permitted on the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck. In compliance with newly enacted International Maritime Organization regulations governing fire safety, we kindly ask that you refrain from leaving towels and other personal belongings on your veranda.

For your convenience, Stateroom Attendants will remove any personal items from your veranda during the course of their evening housekeeping duties and place them back in your Stateroom or Suite.

If your plan is to smoke cigars and cigarettes on your balcony and in at least one lounge - then you need to rethink your plan to cruise on Oceania!

They have a very restrictive smoking policy which is clearly posted on their website if you'd care to look. Simply said, no smoking of any cigars at any time, and cigarette smoking is permitted only in several areas on board. BUT absolutely No Smoking in staterooms or on balconies.

Some who have attempted to circumvent this policy have been disembarked at the next port....

This has been their policy since inception and I very much doubt it will ever change.

Not only is the policy fairly strict, and one of the reasons we like them so much, but they enforce it. On our last cruise apparently somebody decided to ignore the policy and smoke on a balcony somewhere and the next day there were notices in all the cabins re-stating the policy and warning that if you broke it, you could be escorted off at the next port and would pay a fee for the additional cleaning fees. There are two locations on the ship where smoking is permitted, an area near the pool and a corner of the Horizons lounge, and pipe and cigars only by the pool, if that doesn't work for you, you should look at another line otherwise you may just make yourselves miserable.

I could not find anything on their website..so thanks to the poster for adding that information. I did care to look BTW!!! (:>) No, sadly Oceania is not for us then with this restictive policy. Thanks again for the input.

Blame it on the Butler! :)

That guy on the front page of Oceania's website is such a chatty chap.

If you can get past him, the smoking policy is spelled out in at least three areas of the website that I found, i.e. "Terms and Conditions," "Already Booked," and "Passenger Ticket Contract."

We have an itinerary of interest that we hope to book soon on Oceania, and the stricter-than-most smoking policy is one of the main reasons we look forward to sailing Oceania.

Ricky, you need to reread the policy. Or read from the post above yours, especially this part

"Cigar and Pipe smoking is only permitted on the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck. "

Ditto here! DH got a second degree burn on his chest while out on our balcony once by cigar butts that had fallen down from a balcony cabin two decks above us.

Well, I'll be using the lounge on Nautica. They tell me it's very nice.

The smoking area is on the port (left) side of the Horizons lounge, between the bar and the door.....but do bring a book with you as there is hardly ever a soul there.

Thank you very much for the deck layout. I don't intend to be there often except to smoke, so won't be needing that book :D

It's just nice there is a pleasant indoor area where one can sip wine and smoke. Otherwise, I wouldn't have booked.

BTW - does that lounge have music at all? I'm not used to such small ships.

Did he sue the cruise line, or the person responsible (if known)? If so, what is the result? Perhaps experienced lawyer Bruin Steve can enlighten all of us on the merits of such a case.

As I recall, the chamber quartet played there every afternoon during teatime. I also believe that the full band plays there for dancing in the evenings after the show (starting around 10:30 PM), but with the intensive port itinerary on our September cruise, I never made it anywhere but back to our cabin after the show.:)

Isn't Horizons the Disco after the show?

Right as usual. I just checked some of my Oceania Currents daily newsletter left in our cabins for planning the next day's activities on board (yes, I'm a packrat when it comes to vacation literature), and they indicate "DJ Roy" in Horizons at 10:30 PM daily.

Veronica13, now that I pulled out my Currents, the full and accurate answer to your question regarding music in the Horizons lounge (as of September 2008) is as follows:

1. Nautica String Quartet plays there for daily Afternoon Tea at 4:00 PM.

2. Valdi Dance Band plays there for your dancing pleasure at 6:45 PM.

3. DJ Roy spins the discs there at 10:30 PM.

Thank you so much Pam. That sounds like perfection. A place to go have fun after dinner and smoke as well. Tea time is when I usually nap, so it works out great. I never keep my newsletters, but I didn't think of checking this website - it's the only one I know of where people post planners, menus, all the little details you normally don't know about until boarding. Thanks again.:)

The schedule for music in Horizons is at the discretion of the cruise director. On the back to back Nautica cruises we just disembarked the Merak Dance Band ( 4 of the 8 pieces) played from 6 until 6.45 most evenings. The afternoon & late times were generally the same as posted by Cintipam above. The Merak band also disembarked & were replaced by Valdi.
