New Itinerary

Rickey, what I wish we could do -- and what Oceania might do, regardless of the contest -- is combine some of the itineraries. For example, I checked out your Alaskan proposal until after I did mine, and I really admire your Kodiak Island suggestion.

Of course Princess does do some of the unusual ports in Alaska using the smaller ships. Last year on the Tahitian Princess we visited Ketchikan, Skagway, Valdez, Seward, Kodiak, Juneau, Sitka and Victoria as well as cruising Glacier Bay and returning outside the Inside Passage to Victoria. We departed from and returned to Vancouver, a 14 day cruise. This year they are using the Pacific Princess for a similar cruise but are using Seattle instead of Vancouver and have deleted Sitka which I think is a shame.

Dave,

Princess, P&O Australia and HAL more or less do this a couple of times a year. Usually they leave out New Zealand, though you can pick up the ships in N.Z. and just stay on them for the longer voyage which takes about 24 days.

It seems the Pacific is winning. Remember its a business, so Itin must be sellable. Transatlantic, Europe, Alaska etc. way overdone. Most O cruisers been there done that too. Love to see a 3 weeker from LA or SF over to Sydney doing Hawaii, Polynsia and several lesser known Pacific islands. Keep the boat over Australia/NZ several months as a trial, then float back doing one of repos shorter than the other so people with shorter timeframes/ budgets could go. Maybe a 25% singles sup. would be great for early bookers like me.

Don, I'm more than willing to combine itineraries! Some of your ideas are truly outstanding and extremely well thought out. My compliments to your navigator!

On the same subject - Alaska and points East - the thought of leaving Alaska after a call to one port and heading for Hawaii is interesting, but wouldn't that entail a lot of sea days in the North Pacific which can be very choppy?

Somehow, Oceania is going to have to move the ship (Regatta, Nautica or whatever) from Alaska. My thought would be to sail across the Pacific by a truly northern route, the Aleutian chain, thence to Siberia and Petropavlosk. A call into Vladivostok might be interesting - and by that time the ship would be in Asian waters (Japan, China, etc.) set to do a winter down there.

That would also negate the necessity of transiting the Suez and the pirate problem in the Gulf of Aden.

(Gad, this is getting to be lots of fun!) :)

I put in my two suggestions, but want to mention a trip I just booked on another line - sure would rather do it with Oceania

1 Quebec City

2 Quebec City

3. Saquenay, Quebec

4. At Sea

5. Halifax, Nova Scotia

6. Bar Harbor, Maine

7. Boston, Mass.

8. Newport, RI

9. New York City

10. Norfolk, Virginia

11. At Sea

12. Charleston, South Carolina

13. At Sea

14. Ft. Lauderdale Florida

This could even be combined with my North Atlantic - Iceland and Greenland itinerary - to be done in segments, of course (which would make it part of my 2 entries) It is a great repositioning cruise and even lets me off twenty minutes from home.

The fun is the best part of it! My very first thought was about the Northern Pacific route. I was even thinking about ways to add in places like Taiwan and South Korea.

The whole idea was precipitated by the musings of close friends who are in Alaska by motor home as we speak. Their greatest desire (and the desire of several other friends who have contemplated a journey to Alaska) is to tour the Aleutians. There are elaborate ferries that make the trip; I think they intend to park their rig (40' diesel pusher and towed Crossover) and take one of the ferry trips.

While we have an RV, our Sprinter-based Class B with a towed Scion is a little smallish for an Alaskan adventure, sprinter320.jpg

so I started dreaming of a way to cover the same sights in an Oceania cruise ship. Once I got us to the Aleutians, it just seemed logical (as it must have to you) to continue on to Asia. The reason I didn't suggest it is that I decided I had few resources to determine if Taiwan, South Korea or others were safe ports.

I also don't want to fly home from Asia; I made my Alaska itinerary a round trip from mainland USA, and picked San Francisco because we can drive to it in the Sprinter and park it at my sister-in-law's place while we're on the ship. Selfish reasoning? Perhaps, but we are supposed to be describing our dream itineraries, and my dream just happens to preclude flying...

Just noticed your suggested itinerary, Alaska to Far East, with stop in Vladivostok.

We did that in reverse, Sky Princess, 4-97, Osaka Japan to Vancouver BC. Vladivostok, home of the Russian Pacific Fleet, is a bleak, desolate place, with the infrastructure collapsing around it. Went aboard a Russian WW2 Submarine (museum) there - quite cramped compared to US WW2 Fleet Boat of the Gato class.

Our trip was very cold, outside decks closed due to ice build-up. Some of the prepositioned food containers did not make it to Osaka, and we ran out of some veggies and dairy products en route. At our stop in Dutch Harbor, Aleutian Islands, members of the galley staff and Purser's Desk "cleaned out" the local grocery store, restocking food items.

I don't think I would care to make that trip on a ship as small on Oceania's R class; but Marina or her as yet un-named sister would be a possibility. Northern Pacific and the Bering Straits can be "bumpy".

Speaking of Marina, perhaps Frank Del Rio will expedite the posting/publishing of Marina's deck plans, so those of us interested in her maiden trans-Atlantic can start firming up our plans.

Michael,

If anything comes out of these suggestions, FDR would have to utilize a crossing of the North Pacific as a Fall crossing so as to get the ship into S.E. Asia for the winter.

We also visited Siberia in the late 1990's on a land trip eventually traveling on the Trans Siberian Railroad to Irkutsk. Now that was an experience - will tell you all about it when we meet again.....

(Here's hoping FDR will accommodate your requests)

We did that trip also 19 days and LOVED it..weather was beautiful..about 65 and sunny the whole trip and because we were the first ship in each Alaska port..the fire boats were out escorting us and it was so much fun!!

I loved Hiroshima and although we found Vladivostok dark and bleak..the yellow train station was fun and we loved meeting the people..we bought the most beautiful hand painted matryashka dolls there for a great price..I do believe

Vladivostok was one of the few cities we were ever in that NO ONE accepted USD..

Actually I think we did it on the Pacific Princess but I dont remember what year..I would do it again in a heartbeat!!

Of course I would do any cruise in a heatbeat!!

My itinerary which was way back on either Pages 2 or 3 had New York as an embarkation port for a New England Cruise which returned back there after a 2 week cruise.

I have always wanted to sail out of New York and visit New England and Quebec and my itinenary included all of these ports.

You should be able to get back to the beginning (at least, works for me), by Start: New Itinerary thread, then Page guide at top right (Page 1 to 10) and choose Page 1 - that's the actual beginning of this thread, before deletion. I believe the Moderators have kept almost everything intact.

Does that help?

I spent a lot of time trying to come up with a workable schedule around Africa with a 2 day in Capetown & Mombasa. The idea was it could be sold in 2 segments with Capetown the break. There needs to be many sea days not listed here but I would love for Oceania to figure a workable itinerary to sail all around Africa. We have visited several of the ports listed & would love to return to Capetown & Mombasa( A one day land safari from Mombasa is fantastic).

Another small problem is that flying to Capetown from the US is difficult. I am personally tired of anything in the Med. & the ideas expressed here gives hope that Oceania will venture into other areas. Clearly many Oceania guests favor that approach.

I just click on FIRST where they have the page numbers at top of thread.

Or, in the case of someone like me who has used the options in "User CP" to reverse the order of the posts, thus letting me see the newest posts at the top, I click on "LAST" and it takes me to the beginning. This is a literal case of the first being last.

I also changed the number of posts I can see on one page to the maximum of 40, so my page numbers are different and fewer than the default.

Its now MIDNIGHT in Miami and our "challenge" is over.

My sincere thanks to everyone who has posted their version of a perfect or dream itinerary as Brian UK stated.

Over the next couple of weeks (I'm currently on vacation myself), Bob, Robin and I will put our heads together and select 5 worthy selections, which we then hope to post (with Cruise Critic's blessing) on these boards for you to vote your favorite.

Hope to see you all onboard your brainchild itineraries in the not too distant future.
