  1. That is an article written by someone who is already terrified of flying. There are some odd things in it. So yes thunderstorms are dangerous, that's why you fly round them. I have been in the cockpit when flying past a huge thunderstorm, you can see it flashing red in the middle. Weird. So you don't fly through those and you can see them on radar. The reason airports cancel flights due to weather, is usually because there are either high winds that stop an aircraft taking off as it's above their minima. Or thunderstorms in the vicinity of the airfield. Clear Air turbulence on the other hand is not seen and can come from nowhere.
  2. You can't police it. People get up to go to the loo, stretch their legs. You'd have the cabin crew walking around to make sure they strapped in again? Wouldn't work.
  3. It's parents who are to blame for kids behaviour whether on a cruise ship or somewhere else. My experience on Azura with kids banging on cabin doors and running away and playing with the lift buttons is all to do with their upbringing and parental control.
  4. As ex aircrew, you can only make an announcement suggesting that passengers keep their seat belts fastened whilst seated. You can't constantly walk through the cabin checking it. It's up to the passenger
  5. We were on board in October. Which bits of the cabin are dated? Plenty of cupboard space, very comfortable mattresses, which appeared to be new. And we were in an inside. The rest of the ship seemed fine to me. There was a leak near Champions bar, but we went on Azura when she was almost new - 3 months after the start - and toilets were leaking and out of order. Can happen on any ship.
  6. Not a very nice experience. Sounds like clear air turbulence, not a storm. They wouldn't have seen CAT on radar.
  7. Definitely not retiring any time soon. Love where I work. Merry Christmas all.
  8. That happened to us on a 707 over the Andes. One girl cut her face on the ceiling. There was wine and other liquid running down the walls. 3 minutes of clear air turbulence. All us crew hanging on for dear life. Having said that, only once in 16 years did we divert for a sick passenger. We went into Baffin Island as everywhere else was fogged out. One of our crew had the presence of mind to hit this guy in the chest and he came back. We all got a certificate for landing in the Arctic Circle!. The guy made a full recovery and continued the following day.
  9. Why is it looking bleak? Just cruised on Aurora in October and she was really good. That's not to say they won't decide to sell them. But nobody knows and usually it's a last minute decision.
  10. I think you are very foolish to wait until the last minute. You need cover in place when you pay the final balance, otherwise you are not covered.
  11. Exactly what we do. One time we went to Taormina from Messina. Walked down to the train station, 6 Euros to Giardini Naxos, then 1.5 Euro on the bus up to Taormina. Had a good wander round, super lunch in a little cafe, then the same route back. I think we left the ship about 0845 and were back on board by 3.30. Super day and cost peanuts.
  12. Not that long. About 3 hours to Devon, pick up the dog and home. 🙂
  13. I'm not impatient to get off, just we find the ship awful on the last morning, there are people sitting in every possible place with loads of hand luggage, plus wandering around trying to find your case in a baggage hall is awful, so if you have it with you, straight off, over the road, into the car and off.
  14. No I am not famous for different experiences. I have never been told on a cruise what somebody paid. No I am not obsessive about hygiene, although I do wash my hands after using the loo. I have never had norovirus. My husband did catch a cold on board, but that's all. We have cruised for 20 years. I will repeat. We disembarked Aurora in October. We had breakfast at 7.15, were back at our cabin at 0755 and left and went to the lifts. The first one had people in it, so we waited for the next. Nobody in it, we went down to Deck 5 and disembarked. What is so difficult to believe about that? If the first non-self-disembarkation is about 0830, what the hell is the problem.
  15. OK, so just to repeat, we have done this for years and never encountered anyone wanting to get a lift at that time. In fact, it was deserted. We were out of the cabin before 8, just got off the ship at 8.
  16. Selbourne, when is the first disembarkation time for those who do not self-disembark? I think it is 9 am. I did say we are off by 8. I have not yet ever encountered a problem in the lifts. Now again, this is Aurora and we are usually on D deck, so not having a long way to ride, but we have actually never encountered anybody and never waited for a lift.
  17. My one cruise on Azura was enough to tell us we like Adult Only. The rear pool which was Adult only, they brought the kids club down one day, one child crapped in the pool and so that was out of action for 3 days. Then there were the kids finding it funny to run around late in the evening rapping on people's doors and running away. Yes I know it's the parents fault, but just saying.
  18. If there is nobody around what difference does it make if self-disembarkers get off at 8 am. Nobody else has an 8 am disembark?
  19. I received £300 for the two of us missing Gib from Nationwide. I did it on line and payment took about 2 weeks. Seemingly it was quicker if you telephoned.
  20. Those prices are even more eye watering!
  21. Not hearsay, their wine list is on line. https://www.cruise.co.uk/images/cruise/cruise_gallery/1/wine menu_0.pdf
  22. The cheapest bottle of wine on Cunard is $34 which is £26 plus 15% service Charge!!
