  1. well, on the other hand, im looking at a 21 day cruise from capetown to barcleona march 2024. we travel with a close friend, and a 2 bedroom suite on the ncl dawn is (drum roll please) $25000 and that includes my 10% military discount. we're booked on a back to back this july, london to copenhagen, copenhagen to stockholm. 19 day cruise, again with our friend, and the 2 bedroom was $19000. if she wasnt joining us, and we wanted the family suite with balcony, it was $15,000, b2b now, im not b***hing, but it is a little costly. much higher than previous cruises the 3 of us have taken. and yes, i understand we dont have to book a suite, but (1) other than the 3 bedroom, this is the only cabin category that offers a 2nd bathroom, and (2) if we both booked a club balcony suite, the price is almost the same and we wouldnt get the perks
  2. unless youre really picky about being 1st off in a port, imho the priority package isnt worth the price of admission
  3. i wasnt going to chime in on this one, but it seems to be getting away from everyone. we were just on the jewel, and they had the in person muster drill. about 20 minutes of non-stop babbling in english, then another 20 in spanish. it was a great way to catch a few zzz's. obviously, i preferred the video (since we ere forced to watch it while checking in anyway, but i can concede a few minutes of my time prior to sailing to listen to what they have to say. by the way, our muster point was in o'sheehan's, with no problem hearing the entire spiel.
  4. if you're all checked in and the forms are entirely completed, you should be able to click on the cruise docs. in 24 cruises with ncl, they've always been there at least 24 hrs after the check in forms have been completed
  5. mocruisefan. as usual, great in depth advice. your sarcasm is (as always) underwhelming. instead of suggesting they stay in their cabin, why didnt you just tell them to cancel the cruise. bunches of folks on a ship is the hazard of sailing on large vessels.
  6. if you're in a haven or suite (although not club balcony suite), the concierge or the butler will escort you off the ship. depending on when you get back from the excursion, and the port departure time, your butler will be waiting at the bottom of the gangway, with a sign, and will also escort you back to a private elevator. sure it will p**s off others waiting in line to get back on the ship, but that's one of the goodies and perks that come with booking a suite. i cant guarantee this will be the case on all ncl ships, but it was on our last 2 sailings, the gem and just recently the jewel. by the way, our butler, theresa was theeee best
  7. while my wife has no problems with the wrist bans, i'd steer away from the patches. on our very 1st cruise, many years ago, my wife (who talks to everyone) met a very nice lady. she introduced me and i asked where her husband was? she told us, he used the patches, and is nowin their cabin, seeing monkeys!. go figure!
  8. see if the getaway has a cabin category of just "suites" not club balcony suites. some ncl ships have both, and (1) the suites-not haven are a little less money (2) you get most of the same perks (3) you get the butler, concierge and breakfast and lunch at either cagney's or moderno's, but no access to the haven pool, restaurant or bar. if there is no suite category, unfortunately you'll just have to go with the flow. if the buffet seems overly crowded, try the mdr or o'sheehan's
  9. take along some ginger candy or ginger gum. also if you feel it coming on, ask for some green apples slices and some ginger ale. works like a charm. there are also wrist bands you can get at your local pharmacy
  10. hey sea shark: why do you always seem to get your knickers in a twist? it seems that after any given question or comment, you're the one "throwing shade" i just merely inquired if the op was actually going to wear the pin. i wasnt berating, criticizing or making fun of him/her.. we're sapphire, and have been on over 24 ncl cruises. consequently i have a drawer full of those latitude pins. yes! i know i could have turned them down, but it's way easier just to accept them, say "thank you" and throw they in the suitcase. god bless anyone who wants to wear/display them proudly by the way, it's completely wrong to call out chiefmate jrk. havent you figured out by now, that most of his posts are firmly tounge cheek and almost entirely satirical? it's a forum site, you neednt take yourself nor the posts so seriously. im and old man, so best advice to you is "LIGHTEN UP"
  11. im sorry to ask this, but are you really going to wear them? we just got out sapphire pin, and it went right into the drawer when we got home
  12. its a great way to get about 30 minutes of naptime. i usually had no problems with the muster, but we just got off the jewel on feb 4th. the muster took over half an hour, and because we had round sailing from panama, after the english, they repeated the entire process in spanish. im not complaining about that, but i could barely keep my eyes open.
  13. i go to the ncl website, check what's available, decide what i want to do/where i want to go, cabin # and then i call casinos at sea to book. i also go on aarp travel/expedia to check flights. when i see the airlines available to travel, i go on their sites to book. finally, i will go to booking or hotels. com to decide what hotels i want to book. google is a great help in finding out how far the port is from the hotel and vice versa. if you dont want to get to the departure city early, there is also a website with shuttle info from the airport to pier and vice versa, or pier to hotel by now, i'm sure you got the point that i like to do all the paper/ground work by myself. i used a pcc for about 3-4 years until she drove me crazy. one day out of shear frustration, i called CAS andfound out i had great offers my PCC never even mentioned. that was the last time i used her services. im not knocking her, i just get better deals through CAS
  14. we usually do $5 for the driver and $10 for the guide. if youre unsure, wait a little while before leaving the bus and see what other passengers are doing. many times we hire a cab rather than take a cruise shore excursion. since the driver spends a few hours with us and takes us exactly where we want to go we usually tip between 20-30
  15. we're sapphire and just got off the jewel on the 4th. no notice of dinner with an officer (although i definitely would have taken a pass on this one) and cruise next did offer the wine tasting, but not being a wine drinker, i figured it would be wasted on me, so we passed on that also. oh, and chiefmate jrk, nice to hear rom you again!
  16. most likely, especially if you slip your cabin steward a $20
  17. just got of the jewel (daylight transit thru panama canal) in all the times we have cruised with any of the allotted dinner packages, we have never been denied anything ordered. side dishes, appetizers or main course. this has included cagney's, le bistro and la cucina. it's also nice to get the latitude package that gives you a free bottle of wine at cagneys and le bistro
  18. yes, its ok for an adult. the sofa opens up for a more comfortable bed. my friend often travels with my wife and i. we get the 2 bedroom (were on the jade 2 bedroom last april) and shes perfectly happy with the 2nd bedroom. remember, that the 3rd person sleeping in the 2nd bedroom, gets all the perks that come with a suite. so, in actuality, all she was using the 2nd room for was sleeping. we all shared the main part of the cabin equally.
  19. so tell me, honestly, have you never asked for a doggie bag, when you found that you were either full prior to the end of your meal, or the main course was just to big to finish. i'd rather see people take food from any of the ship board restaurants, then see the food go to waste. our last cruise was on the gem, and the few times we ate in the buffet, it killed me to see how much was put out, and how much wasnt even touched
  20. so just buy a bottle of what you want the day before you are scheduled to leave, and wrap as indicated. if you wrap the bottle securely, it is really no problem. and remember, there are probably no total wine and more shops if youre cruising from foreign ports.
  21. just wrap it and pack it very carefully. we've brought wine home on numerous occasions, just wrapped really tightly under a bunch of clothes and you should have no problems. just remember to pack it in your checked luggage.
  22. while never having sailed on the joy, after reading numerous posts on this ship, it appears more trouble than it's worth. it better have an A1+++ itinerary to justify its shorthcomings. did you book a regular suite and not the club balcony?
  23. in that case, enjoy, as long as you can still walk. if you go to the sushi bar, or the chinese restaurant, you may want to try a cold undistilled saki. i believe its called nigiri. i usually order it on the rocks
  24. wolft927. it has been our experience that any ship that offers both "haven suites" and cabins referred to as "suites"(not the club balcony suites) are entitled to and offered the same perks and amenities as any haven guest except access to the haven bar , pool, sundeck and haven restaurant. that is essentially the difference between a haven suite and a suite (other than the actual difference in price) the rooms look almost identical, the cabin choices are almost identical, the difference in price is the access to the "haven specially designated areas" for the savings of a few $1000 , i can forgo the pool and bar. we are still offered breakfast at modernos and lunch at cagney's . we get the same priority check in as any haven guest. the above has been our personal experiences when not booking a haven
  25. like2cruise: just a couple of quick questions, how long was your cruise, and if you just had 1 of every drink you mentioned, how many days on the cruise were you either sober (lol). no offense meant, i just want to make sure the cruise critic censor police realize this was a tease comment.
